Notes: Abstract The paper contains the results of extensive single-point hot-wire and resistance-thermometer measurements in a wall jet on a heated concave wall with an external free stream. It is found that the turbulence in the inner (wall) and outer layers is sensitive to the distortion produced by the curved wall, broadly confirming current views of these effects. The effect on the turbulence of streamline curvature is stabilising in the outer layer, destabilising in the inner. Consequently the point of zero shear stress is closer to the point of maximum mean velocity than in flat and convex wall jets with which these new results are compared. The rate of growth is about 80% of that of the equivalent flat wall flow, and about half that of the convex wall flow. Changes in the wall shear stress and heat flux, which are increased relative to the flat wall flow, are significant but less than the changes in the corresponding convex wall flow. The greatest changes occur in the triple products.

Notes: The structural relaxation in (Ni,Fe)75Si10B15 metallic glasses has been studied by measuring resistivity changes and Mössbauer spectra. The sign and magnitude of resistivity changes due to the relaxation depend strongly on the Ni/Fe ratio. The isothermal resistivity changes fit well the nonlinear kinetic form, indicating that the fluctuation of local environments of Ni and Fe atoms is very large and Ni and Fe atoms in Ni-Fe-Si-B metallic glasses are mobile compared with Co and Fe atoms in Co-Fe-Si-B metallic glasses. The compositional dependence and kinetic parameters for reversible resistivity changes and Mössbauer spectra strongly support that the reversible structural relaxation corresponds to the reversible short-range ordering between Ni and Fe atoms.

Notes: Ultralong pulse ((approximately-greater-than)40 μs) fluorescence of ArF excimer molecules at 193 nm has been generated by dynamically mixing a pulse discharge excited He jet with neutral Ar/F2 gas located downstream in a vacuum chamber. Rapid cooling of the high temperature He plasma through neutral gas collisions and efficient energy transfer to Ar gas create Ar metastable atoms, which form ArF excimer molecules through harpoon reactions with F2, in relatively field-free space. The fluorescence intensity increased with increasing F2 concentration up to ∼10% F2 in Ar with 2-atm backing pressure. In a preliminary experiment with an ArF probe laser, this mixture showed an amplification gain.

Notes: Lamellar microdomains formed in the solvent-cast films of a poly[styrene-block-(ethylene-alt-propylene)] (SEP) diblock polymer were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The SAXS profiles, displaying a series of peculiar scattering maxima which cannot be ascribed to the higher-order diffraction maxima from a regular lamellar spacing, were analyzed based on a model of the one-dimensional paracrystal with a preferential orientation. The results suggest that these maxima are due to higher-order scattering maxima from single lamellar microdomains. The maxima suggest that the relative standard deviation for the distribution of the polystyrene lamellar size is much smaller than that of the lamellar spacing, giving rise to a situation in which the oscillation of the particle factor with scattering vector h persists up to high h values while that of the lattice factor damps to unity at low h values. The SAXS result was interpreted as being due to a bending distortion of the polystyrene lamella with a smaller thickness and a narrower thickness distribution than those of the poly(ethylene-alt-propylene) lamella. A study by transmission electron microscopy tends to support this result.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the experimental study of a flow past a cube with rounded side-corners placed in a ground plane under the condition of δ/D 〈 1, where δ is the thickness of the upstream boundary layer. The experiment was carried out in an N.P.L. type wind-tunnel having a working section of 500 mm×500 mm × 2,000 mm at a Reynolds number 4.74×104. The suface-pressure distribution on the cube was measured, and the drag coefficient was determined from the surface-pressure distribution. Furthermore, two kinds of vortices generated around the cube were observed. The distribution of velocities and turbulent intensities in the turbulent wake behind the cube with rounded side corners were measured, and compared with those of a two-dimensional cylinder. As a result, it was found that the drag coefficient decreases rapidly in the range of 0 ≦ 2R/D ≦ 0.3, and the Strouhal number for the arch-vortex shedding increases as the radius of the corner increases.

Notes: Summary We detected a diurnal change of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) messenger RNA (mRNA) in the rat suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) using the in situ hybridization technique combined with computed image analysis. The amount of VIP mRNA was greatest at 02.00 h, the next largest level was seen at 20.00 h during the dark phase and smallest at 14.00 h during the light phase. We also confirmed that the onset of the fluctuation of mRNA occurred 2–6 h prior to the diurnal variation of the content of VIP-like immunoreactivity by semiquantitative immunocytochemistry. These findings suggest that light stimulus from the retina is a primarily influence on the transcription of VIP mRNA and induces a diurnal variation of VIP synthesis.

Notes: Abstract A fundamental study of hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) was performed on Y-TZP powder compacts, and the effect of the various HI Ping process variables (time, temperature and pressure) was examined on the densification behaviour. The results were analysed using Ashby's HIPing model, which was found to be applicable for this system. The densification was found to be governed by the grain-boundary diffusion of cations. The use of grain-boundary transport characteristics determined in this study enabled HIP maps to predict the densification behaviour of HIPing within an accuracy of a factor of three for all stages of densification, except for the results at low HIPing pressure and the region of near full density.
