Notes: A new microcomputer-controlled instrument has been developed for making measurements of thermomechanical behavior of polymeric fibers and yarns under conditions relevant to high-speed industrial fiber processing. The instrument can apply extension and/or twist, and rapid heating or cooling in the temperature range 20–300 °C, while tension and torque are measured. Particular novel features are: a temperature control device providing heating or cooling at rates up to 103 K/s; a new form of high-sensitivity torque transducer with resolution of 10−9 Nm; and computer integration of extension, twist, and temperature. The instrument provides an unprecedented degree of flexibility in the design of thermomechanical tests. It is suitable not only as a versatile research tool for material property measurements relevant to processes such as spinning, heat setting, and thermobonding of fibers, but also as a convenient tester for use in quality control on fibers and yarns.

Notes: Abstract Asymetrically substituted copper phthalocyanine (as-CuPc) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are prepared on metal-coated quartz substrates and the electronic behaviour of sandwich structures of metal/CuPc LB film/metal are studied under normal laboratory ambients. The results show that CuPc films are very stable and reproducible. D.c. measurements produce ohmicI(V) characteristics while the a.c. conductance shows a power-law dependence on the frequency.

Notes: Abstract Using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, novel copper bis(3-hydroxypropyloxy-hexaisopentyloxy)phthalocyanine molecules were deposited on quartz substrates. It is argued on the basis of pressure-area isotherms that films are deposited as monolayers. Optical absorption spectroscopy suggests that the deposited films were uniform. A.c. measurements were performed on LB films in a planar configuration at different temperatures. The power-law dependence of the conductivity on frequency is explained in terms of electronic conduction through hopping over a coulombic barrier 0.66 eV high. The Debye relaxation time is estimated to be of the order 811 µs at room temperature.

Notes: Abstract Organic thin films, produced by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique were used to sense toluene gas at levels of 5–9 p.p.m.(parts per million). The interaction of the gas with the surface of the thin films led to significant changes in the electrical conductivity of the film. Since surface reaction is vital in these sensors, it is expected that films produced by the LB technique would provide the necessary surface uniformity to improve the performances of these devices. Most thin film sensors are operated at elevated temperatures to obtain higher efficiencies. A major problem associated with the use of LB films at elevated temperatures is the probability of disintegration and distortion of the layered structure. Thin films (thickness ≈ 100–120 nm) of specially substituted phthalocyanine molecules were investigated as possible sensors of toluene gas for room-temperature operation. The preliminary results indicated instantaneous response and recovery times, and the saturation value was reached within 2–3 s when the film was exposed to the gas at intervals of 2 min. The results thus offer potential for using such versatile organic materials as microsensors, even at room temperature.

Notes: Abstract Karyological changes in the callus tissue ofCostus speciosus (Koen.) Sm. at different ages have been analysed both by counting chromosome number and quantitating DNA content through cytophotometry. The cultures had been established from the tuber and maintained in modified Murashige and Skoog's basal medium (Physiol. Plant. 15: 473–497, 1962) supplemented with 2,4-D, NAA and BAP. Abnormality in chromosome behaviour leading to the formation of hypo- and hyperdiploid cells along with the diploid cells was observed. The abnormalities reached an optimum at different ages of the callus followed by a decline which varied amongst three populations. The frequency of hyperdiploid cells was higher than that of the hypodiploids. The role of endomitotic replication as well as non-disjunction of chromosomes resulting in the variation in chromosome number has been suggested. This was supported by the nuclear DNA value in successive passages. A difference in average amount of nuclear DNA with increase in age of the callus was recorded and the value also differed amongst these populations.

Notes: This paper deals with a new approach to nonlinear and nonequilibrium thermodynamics. The new concept, developed by P. H. Lindenmeyer, states that in a heat-setting process, with the same average processing temperature, the addition of a sinusoidal fluctuation (approximately) can produce two opposite changes depending upon the frequency and amplitude of the temperature fluctuation. Preliminary experimental results obtained on nylon 6 monofilaments using a flexible thermomechanical analyzer have clearly shown that the physical properties (in this case torque-twist modulus) depend not only upon the average temperature but also upon its time rate of change.
