    Description: Numerous features of glaciological significance appear on two adjoining SPOT High Resolution Visible (HRV) images that cover the onset region of Ice Stream B, Antarctica. Many small-scale features, such as crevasses and drift plumes, have been observed in aerial photography. Subtle large-scale features, such as long flow traces that have not been mapped previously, are clear in the satellite imagery. Newly discovered features include ladder-like runners and rungs within certain shear margins, flow traces that are parallel to ice flow, unusual crevasse patterns and flow traces originating within shear margins.

    Description: Spaceborne data are becoming sufficiently extensive spatially and sufficiently lengthy over time to provide important gauges of global change. There is a potentially long record of microwave brightness temperature from NASA's Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), followed by the Navy's Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I). Thus it is natural to combine data from successive satellite programs into a single, long record. To do this, we compare brightness temperature data collected during the brief overlap period (7 July-20 August 1987) of SMMR and SSM/I. Only data collected over the Antarctic ice sheet are used to limit spatial and temporal complications associated with the open ocean and sea ice. Linear regressions are computed from scatter plots of complementary pairs of channels from each sensor revealing highly correlated data sets, supporting the argument that there are important relative calibration differences between the two instruments. The calibration scheme was applied to a set of average monthly brightness temperatures for a sector of East Antarctica.

An objective of our work is to contribute to an understanding of the genesis of the features observed in satellite imagery. The genetic possibilities for flow traces, other lineations, bands of transverse crevasses, shear margins, mottles, and lumps and warps are described.

    Description: The purpose was to assess the market potential of remote sensing value-added products from the Earth Observing System (EOS) platform. Sensors on the EOS platform were evaluated to determine which qualities and capabilities could be useful to the commercial user. The approach was to investigate past and future satellite data distribution programs. A questionnaire was developed for use in a telephone survey. Based on the results of the survey of companies that add value to remotely sensed data, conversations with the principal investigators in charge of each EOS sensor, a study of past commercial satellite data ventures, and reading from the commercial remote sensing industry literature, three recommendations were developed: develop a strategic plan for commercialization of EOS data, define a procedure for commercial users within the EOS data stream, and develop an Earth Observations Commercial Applications Program-like demonstration program within NASA using EOS simulated data.

    Description: A technique for classifying a Landsat Thematic Mapper image was demonstrated on the Wayne National Forest of southeastern Ohio. The classified image was integrated into a geographic information system database, and prescriptive forest land use allocation models were developed using the techniques of cartographic modeling. Timber harvest sites and accompanying haul roads were allocated.
