    Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to examine the antidepressant drug prescribing preferences and habits of a population of general practitioners. The method used was that of a questionnaire survey, including case vignettes. The response rate exceeded 70% Data are presented outlining the attitudes of the respondents to the use of antidepressant drugs in the management of common psychiatric presentations in the primary care setting. The majority of general practitioners (G.P.'s) had received little or no post-graduate education in psychiatry. The antidepressants most frequently prescribed were amitriptyline, clomipramine, trazodone and lofepramine. Despite recognition of the alarming frequency of serious self-poisoning incidents with some of these compounds, 26% of respondents confessed to an inability to make an informed choice of antidepressant drug, with 14% using the same drug with every patient with no attempt to select according to individual patient requirements. The management of depressive neurosis generates considerable clinical confusion with a variety of interventions favoured. The use of a sedating antidepressant is popular. There is greater accord for the management of endogenomorphic depression. The use of the benzodiazepine drugs in the management of anxiety disorders is infrequent, with appropriate recognition of the merits of behavioural approaches. However, the role for antidepressant drugs in the management of anxiety disorders is under-recognized. We conclude that general practitioners are required to undertake a significant body of work for which they may be inadequately trained.

    Notes: Abstract. Cryptocaryon irritans was isolated from Grammistes sexlineatus and maintained in aquaria under controlled conditions using the mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso), as an experimental host. The pellicle and cortical cytoplasm of the trophont, tomont, tomite and theront stages were investigated with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. The general structural organization of the pellicle resembles that of the freshwater holotrich, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis; however, the pellicular alveoli are characterized by the accumulation of electron-dense material in the trophont, tomite and theront, this material being lost in the newly-encysted tomont. The outer membranes of the pellicle are infolded into the alveoli of the trophont. Cilia are present at all stages of the life cycle, although at encystment their numbers are greatly reduced by shedding. Mitochondria, mucocysts and Golgi-like cisternae are distributed throughout the cortical cytoplasm. Mucocysts differ from those of I. multifiliis in size, shape and distribution and are of uniform electron density. The role of the pellicle and cortical cytoplasm is discussed in relation to the invasion of the fish epidermis, possible intertransferance of materials between parasite and host and the process of encystment.

    Notes: Abstract Turbine fuels are often the only aviation fuel available in most of the world. Turbine fuels consist of numerous constituents with varying water solubilities, volatilities and toxicities. This study investigates the toxicity of the water soluble fraction (WSF) of JP-4 using the Standard Aquatic Microcosm (SAM). Multivariate analysis of the complex data, including the relatively new method of nonmetric clustering, was used and compared to more traditional analyses. Particular emphasis is placed on ecosystem dynamics in multivariate space. The WSF is prepared by vigorously mixing the fuel and the SAM microcosm media in a separatory funnel. The water phase, which contains the water-soluble fraction of JP-4 is then collected. The SAM experiment was conducted using concentrations of 0.0, 1.5 and 15% WSF. The WSF is added on day 7 of the experiments by removing 450 ml from each microcosm including the controls, then adding the appropriate amount of toxicant solution and finally bringing the final volume to 3 L with microcosm media. Analysis of the WSF was performed by purge and trap gas chromatography. The organic constituents of the WSF were not recoverable from the water column within several days of the addition of the toxicant. However, the impact of the WSF on the microcosm was apparent. In the highest initial concentration treatment group an algal bloom ensued, generated by the apparent toxicity of the WSF of JP-4 to the daphnids. As the daphnid populations recovered the algal populations decreased to control values. Multivariate methods clearly demonstrated this initial impact along with an additional oscillation seperating the four treatment groups in the latter segment of the experiment. Apparent recovery may be an artifact of the projections used to describe the multivariate data. The variables that were most important in distinguishing the four groups shifted during the course of the 63 day experiment. Even this simple microcosm exhibited a variety of dynamics, with implications for biomonitoring schemes and ecological risk assessments.

    Description: Element, carbon and oxygen isotope fractionations have been studied in laminated deposits, manganese nodules and phosphorite lenses in clastic sediments of the Cambrian Timna Formation, southern Israel. Comparisons of element abundances show that only manganese, phosphorus and uranium were mobilized and concentrated during diagenesis: element fractionations among the diagenetic manganese components particularly resemble those observed in present-day suboxic pelagic marine sediments. Epigenetic processes involving reducing solutions reversed the diagenetic geochemical trends, with the redox-sensitive elements manganese and uranium showing considerable depletions in nodules, and iron and lead showing corresponding enrichments. The manganese oxides of nodules have calculated δ18O compositions varying from –1.6 to 3.1 ‰. These compositions are significantly lower than a δ18O value of 7.9 ‰ obtained for the manganese oxides of an ocean floor nodule and are taken to largely represent temperature differences between the ocean floor and the shallow marine Timna conditions. Slight decreases in δ18O accompany the transformation from diagenetic type A to epigenetic type B manganese nodules; corresponding shifts to lower δ18O are also inferred for the structural carbonate of apatites. Such shifts are compatible with re-equilibration accompanying a slight temperature increase and/or low temperature meteoric-water alteration. δ13C values of –7 to –12‰ obtained for the apatites of laminated deposits and phosphorite lenses are consistent with phosphorite diagenesis in suboxic to anoxic pore-waters. Early diagenetic redox conditions are indicated to be major controls governing the development of the assemblages.
