    Notes: A procedure was developed to entrap culture bacteria using a two-phase (water/oil) system. It consisted of 3% sodium alginate mixed with microbial cells and suspended in an oil bath containing 0.2% Tween 80. While stirring at 200 rpm, calcium chloride (O.OSM) solution was added to break the water/oil emulsion and form calcium alginate gel. The calcium alginate beads containing microbial cells had mean diameters of 25–35 μm (range S-100 μm). The entrapped microbial cells were released completely from the drop shaped beads by gentle shaking in 0.lM phosphate solution (pH 7.5) for 10 min. About 40% more lactobacilli survived freezing of ice milk when they were entrapped in calcium alginate than when they were not entrapped.

    Notes: A mixture of 2% acetic, 1% lactic, 0.25% citric and 0.1% ascorbic acid was applied to beef core samples of muscle inoculated with bacteria. Experimental variables were concentration and temperature of mixed acids and type of microorganism. Overall, an increase in either mixed acids concentration (0 to 3%) or temperature (20 to 70°C) resulted in reductions in counts of about one logi0 for aerobic bacteria and S. ryphimurium, less than one log10 for Enterobacteriaceae, and about one-half log10 for E. coli. Initial meat surface pH dropped to 4.3 after treatment with 3% mixed acids solution but rose to 5.2 after 24 hr. Overall, this mixture of acids performed about the same as acetic acid or lactic acid under the same conditions.

    Notes: Vanilla flavor frozen desserts were made to be similar in composition except for the fat. Canola and soybean oils were combined with milk fat to provide fatty acid ratios of 1:1:1 and 3:2:1 (saturated: monounsaturated:polyunsaturated), whereas the milk fat control had a ratio of 24:8.6: 1. Sensory, physical and chemical tests indicated minimal differences between the control ice cream and the dessert with the 3:2:1 ratio. However, product with the 1:1:1 ratio was described as oily and oxidized in flavor. It melted faster, was softer in the penetration test and coarser in texture than the ice cream control.

    Notes: Abstract A Monte-Carlo approach for solving huge, dense matrices for eigenvalues and eigenvectors is proposed. The matrix must satisfy certain conditions including a smooth density of diagonal elements curve and relatively constant off-diagonal elements. The approach simply involves randomly choosing a finite order (as large as computationally possible) subset matrix from the original matrix and then diagonalizing the subset. The results are crude, but often informative.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution of nuclei resulting from the annihilation of stopped antiprotons on238U has been studied by an off-line measurement of the residual radioactivity. It was found that the probability of fission exceeds 84% (68% c.l.). The charge and mass distributions of the fission products can be separated into two parts, a more frequent symmetric component originating from high energy fission (excitation energy between 100 MeV and 1 GeV) and an asymmetric component from low energy fission (excitation energy less than 40 MeV).

    Notes: Abstract We have developed a geography-based computer model of the Bisley Experimental Watershed ecosystem that simulates basic forest dynamics as a function of meteorological inputs and hydrologic simulation, as influenced by topography, soils, land use, and cover. The model is parameterized based on steady slate levels of, and hurricane impacts on, biomass, necromass and rate processes of the tabonuco forest, and is stable over decades. Over a 60 yr simulation (without hurricanes) leaf biomass remains approximately constant and woody biomass of those regions not having severe sunlight, moisture, or nutrient limitations increases slowly in agreement with observations. Necromass decreases slowly. Small quantities of C leave the ecosystem in stream water, especially during large rain events. When topographically-sensitive hurricane impacts are included, leaf and woody biomass are converted to necromass. In the model the recovery of the watersheds' hydrology, leaf and woody biomass, and necromass are consistent with field observations. We used this model to simulate the C dynamics of the forest over centurics using empirical values and found that (his forest acted to pump C from the atmosphere to the ocean at a rate of about 90 kg ha−1 yr−1.

    Notes: Crystallinity in PVC contributes significantly to the strength and resiliency of the polymer. Two types of crystallites have been described: a primary crystallite in the virgin powder state pictured as a platelet or flat needle-like lamellar crystallite, and a secondary, fringed micellar crystallite from melts or solutions. Both crystallites create loose, crosslinking networks. The secondary crystallite forms when plastisol melts are cooled or solutions are gelled. Crystallites exert a major effect on rheological properties. The thermal destruction of the primary crystallite networks in the melt phase results in a decrease in elastic modulus. Cooling from the fused state creates secondary crystallites that affect tensile and elongation.

    Notes: Azodicarbonamide has been widely used for many years as the blowing agent of choice for expansion of vinyl foams. It has been especially useful in chemically embossed flooring because the sensitivity of the blowing agent to various factors affecting its decomposition temperature permits control of the degree of expansion of the foam. Considerable work has been done by a number of investigators to elucidate these factors. Mechanisms for the decomposition of azodicarbonamide have been proposed in the literature to explain the activating or retarding effect of many compounds on the decomposition temperature. The use of Differential Scanning Calorimetry with an active reference is shown to be an extremely useful tool in determining small effects of various additives on the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent.

    Notes: Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) reproducibly induces chondrogenesis and osteogenesis when implanted into skeletal muscle. The exact identity of the cell that responds to BMP is not known. Furthermore, controversy exists regarding the possibility that myoblastic cells may transdifferentiate to chondrocytes and osteoblasts under the influence of BMP. We have therefore, undertaken studies on the effects of BMP on differentiation in L6 and C2C12 cells, two rodent myoblastic cell lines. To gain insights into the mechanisms of action of BMP, we have studied the effects of BMP on the levels of expression of the four known myogenic determination genes: myogenin, Myo D, herculin, and myf-5. BMP inhibited myogenesis in myoblastic cells. Convincing evidence of transdifferentiation of myoblasts to chondrocytes or osteoblasts was not seen. BMP inhibited the expression of all four myogenic determination genes.
