Description: Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) is a primate lentivirus related to human immunodeficiency viruses and is an etiologic agent for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-like diseases in macaques. To date, only inactivated whole virus vaccines have been shown to protect macaques against SIV infection. Protective immunity was elicited by recombinant subunit vaccines. Four Macaca fascicularis were immunized with recombinant vaccinia virus expressing SIVmne gp160 and were boosted with gp160 produced in baculovirus-infected cells. All four animals were protected against an intravenous challenge of the homologous virus at one to nine animal-infectious doses. These results indicate that immunization with viral envelope antigens alone is sufficient to elicit protective immunity against a primate immunodeficiency virus. The combination immunization regimen, similar to one now being evaluated in humans as candidate human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 vaccines, appears to be an effective way to elicit such immune responses.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hu, S L -- Abrams, K -- Barber, G N -- Moran, P -- Zarling, J M -- Langlois, A J -- Kuller, L -- Morton, W R -- Benveniste, R E -- AI26503/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- R01 AI28065/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- RR00166/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Jan 24;255(5043):456-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Seattle, WA 98121.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1531159" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The best operational conditions for puffing dent corn grits with a rice cake machine were 14% grit moisture, 215°C and 9 sec. Salting and steaming, low pH soaking medium, larger corn grit sizes, 2% glycerin, and 2% corn oil tended to increase puffed volume of the corn cakes. Smaller grit sizes, 3% alcohol and high pH soaking medium had negative effects on corn cake volume. Acid-modification of corn starch, 1% or 3% corn oil, and up to 10% sugar had no effect.

Notes: The effects of a barrel-valve assembly on extrusion system dynamics and product properties with various screw speeds and specific feeding loads (SFL) were studied using an APV Baker twin-screw extruder. Turning the barrel-valve from the open to closed position resulted in a convex response of die pressure due to the axial offset of paired orifice plugs, with concomitant changes in system responses and extrudate properties. Variations in SFL by changing feed rate or screw speed caused more pronounced effects on product properties compared with barrel-valve control.

Notes: Pure and Cr2O3-doped Bi12SiO20 (BSO) single crystals have been successfully grown using Czochralski technique. Doping 30 ppm of Cr2O3 into BSO single crystals has lowered the transmittance and increased the photochromic effect of the materials significantly. Although the overall diffraction efficiency of photorefractive effect in response to 633 nm laser beam has not been increased, the intrinsic diffraction efficiency (ηi) and the response time constant (τ) have been improved markedly. The applicability of the BSO crystals in the red light regime is thus increased.

Notes: Crystal growth of a sillenite structure with a composition of Bi12(Si1−xTix)O20 and the corresponding optical characteristics have been systematically examined. The incongruent melting materials Bi12TiO20(BTO) have been observed to form a solid solution with congruent melting materials Bi12SiO20(BSO) for the whole range of the x value. The cutoff wavelength increases and the optical activity decreases linearly with BTO content in the crystals. The photorefractive effect is modified significantly due to the addition of BTO. The diffraction efficiency (η) of the photorefractive grating increases first with BTO content for x≤0.33 and saturates for a larger amount of BTO addition. The response speed is, however, promoted markedly for x≥0.48.

Notes: The magnetic properties of an alternating two-element multilayer film are studied by the Green's function based upon the Heisenberg model with coupled interaction between the layers in the interfaces. It is proved that the order parameter changed with the position of the atomic planes in the multilayer films but the Curie temperature of the atomic planes is all the same. Applying the theory to an alternating terbium-iron multilayer structure, numerical calculation agrees with the results of magnetic measurements.

Notes: Single crystals of LiNbO3 doped with up to 25 mol % of MgO were successfully grown. No precipitates were discovered. In studies of the change of the Curie temperatures and Raman spectra with composition, an abrupt change was observed near the composition of 10 mol % of MgO. From the model of Gallagher relating Tc and cation vacancies and the cation occupation calculated by x-ray data, it is proposed that the Mg atoms replace the Nb atoms at Li sites. When the Nb atoms are exhausted, the Mg atoms replace the Li sites and Li vacancies are created. The amount of Mg in the LiNbO3 structure could be predicted better from the 151 cm−1 peak shift in Raman spectra than from Tc.

Notes: Summary Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) was isolated from rice Oryza sativa ssp. japonica, but not from other subspecies. The dsRNA has been found in all of the examined cytoplasmic male-sterile (CMS) lines of BT (Chinsurah Boro II)-type rice, but was not detected in their companionate maintainer lines. It is uniquely and positivley correlated with the CMS trait in BT-type rice. Recently, the dsRNA was also found in a nuclear malesterile (NMS) rice, Nongken 58s, but was not found in its normal Nongken 58. The molecular weight of this dsRNA was estimated to be about 18 kb. Electron microscopic analysis reveals that it is linear snapped. The double strandedness of the RNA molecules was characterized by CF-11 cellulose column chromatography and nuclease treatments. It bound to CF-11 cellulose in the presence of 15% ethanol. It was sensitive to RNase A at low salt concentrations, but insensitive to DNase I, SI nuclease, and RNase A at high salt concentrations. The dsRNA was detected in both mitochondrial and cytoplasmic fractions. Dot-blot hybridization reveals that there is no sequence homology between this dsRNA and mtDNA, but there is homology between this dsRNA and nuclear genomic DNA. We have not been able to transmit this dsRNA to fertile rice.

Notes: Abstract We propose an iterative procedure to solve the linearized Gorkov equation and calculate the superconducting critical temperature of superconductor-normal metal superlattice in the whole region of layer thickness. We also give a discussion of the validity range of the local approximation made on the proximity effect of SN superlattice.

Notes: Raman spectra of a series of MgO-doped congruent LiNbO3 crystals were obtained with MgO concentrations up to 30 mol.%. Single crystals were successfully grown and no precipitates were discovered. The intensity, frequency and line width of the Raman phonons were studied as a function of doping percentage. An abrupt change was observed near the composition of 7.5 mol.% of MgO-doped LiNbO3 crystal. From the spectral changes it is proposed that Mg2+ replaces the mis-sited Nb5+ cation at Li sites first. When these mis-sited Nb5+ cations have been completely replaced, the Mg2+ cation then replaces the Li+ cation and creates vacancies at Li+ sites.
