Notes: On lowering the chemical potential of diatomic oxygen, the compound YBa2Cu4O8 was found to decompose into a mixture of YBa2Cu3O6+x and CuO. The equilibrium oxygen potential corresponding to this decomposition has been measured from 870 to 1150 K using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01×105 Pa as the reference electrode: Pt, O'2||YBa2Cu4O8+YBa2Cu3O6+x+CuO(parallel)(Y2O3) ZrO2(parallel)O2(1.01×105 Pa), Pt. The low oxygen potential boundary for the stability of YBa2Cu4O8 can be represented by ΔμO2=−238 900+207.7 T(±800) J mol−1. At the standard pressure of oxygen (1.01×105 Pa) the decomposition occurs at 1150 K.

Notes: Abstract The a.c. conductivity of CaF2 samples containing a fine dispersion of CaO particles has been measured in the temperature range 630 to 1100 K. The conductivity of the dispersed solid electrolyte is two orders of magnitude higher than that for pure polycrystalline CaF2 in the middle of the temperature range. Transport measurements on pure single crystals of CaF2 and polycrystalline samples, with and without CaO dispersion, using Fe+FeO and pure Fe as electrodes, clearly indicate that fluorine ions are the only migrating ionic species with a transport number of almost unity, contrary to the suggestion of Chou and Rapp [1, 2]. The enhanced conductivity of the dispersed solid electrolyte probably arises from two effects. A small solubility of oxygen in CaF2 results in an increase in the fluorine vacancy concentration and conductivity. Adsorption of fluorine ions on the surface of the dispersed particles of CaO results in a space charge region around each particle with enhanced conductivity. Measurements on a galvanic cell incorporating CaF2 as the solid electrolyte and oxide electrodes show that the e.m.f. is a function of the activity of CaO at the electrode/electrolyte interface. The response to an oxygen potential gradient is, therefore, through an exchange reaction, which establishes an equivalent fluorine potential at the electrode/electrolyte interface.

Notes: Abstract Hypo-eutectic Ti-6.5 wt % Si alloy modified by separate additions of misch metal and low surface tension elements (Na, Sr, Se and Bi) has been examined by microscopic study and thermal analysis. Addition of third element led to modification of microstructure with apparently no significant enhancement of tensile ductility, with the exception of bismuth. Bismuth enhanced the ductility of the alloy by a factor of two and elastic-plastic fracture toughness to 9 MPa m−1/2 from a value of almost zero. The improved ductility of bismuth modified alloy is attributed to the reduced interconnectivity of the eutectic suicide, absence of significant suicide precipitation in the eutectic region and increase in the volume fraction of uniformly distributed dendrites. These changes are accompanied by a decrease in the temperature of eutectic solidification.

Notes: Abstract The Gibbs' energies of formation of BaCuO2, Y2Cu2O5 and Y2BaCuO5 from component oxides have been measured using solid state galvanic cells incorporating CaF2 as the solid electrolyte under pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01×105 Pa 〈BaO〉 + 〈CuO〉 → 〈BaCuO2〉 ΔG f,ox o (± 0.3) (kJ mol−1)=−63.4−0.0525T(K) 〈Y2O3〉 + 2〈CuO〉 → 〈Y2Cu2O2〉 ΔG f,ox o (± 0.3) (kJ mol−1)=18.47−0.0219T(K) 〈Y2O3〉 + 〈BaO〉 + 〈CuO〉 → 〈Y2BaCuO5〉 ΔG f,ox o (± 0.7) (kJ mol−1)=−72.5−0.0793T(K) Because the superconducting compound YBa2Cu3O7−δ coexists with any two of the phases CuO, BaCuO2 and Y2BaCuO5, the data on BaCuO2 and Y2BaCuO5 obtained in this study provide the basis for the evaluation of the Gibbs' energy of formation of the 1-2-3 compound at high temperatures.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Transition Metal Alkyl Compounds. 57. 2-(Dimethylaminomethyl)ferrocenyl Compounds of 3 d Elements[2-(Dimethylaminomethyl)ferrocenyl]lithium, (FcN)Li (I), reacts with MCl2 · xTHF to (FcN)2Mn (II), (FcN)2Co (III), Li2[Fe(FcN)2Cl2] (IV) as well as with FeCl3 to (FcN)3Fe (V). In the same way the complex (C5H5)2V(FcN) (VI) was obtained from (C5H5)2VCl. When I is reacted with M(acac)3 (M = Cr, Co) only a partial ligand exchange took place  -  independently from the molar ratio of the reactants  -  with formation of (FcN)Cr(acac)2 (VII) and (FcN)Co(acac) (VIII).An intensive characterization of II-VIII was achieved by elementary analysis, determination of molecular weights, IR-, UV-VIS- and 1H-NMR spectra as well as determination of effective magnetic moments.
