Notes: Abstract Dry friction problems lead to discontinuous differential equations, e.g. to $$x'' + xx' + \mu \operatorname{sgn} x' + \beta ^2 x = \varphi (t),$$ where sgn γ=γγ for γ ≠ 0 and sgn (0)=[ − 1. 1]. We study existence of ω-periodic solutions of (1) in case ϕ is ω-periodic. Results forx〉 0 are given in the book “Multivalued Differential Equations” (K. Deimling: De Gruyter 1992). and preliminary ones forx=0 are contained in K. Deimling “Multivalued differential equations and dry friction problems” (Proc. Conf. Differential & Delay Equations. World Sci. Publ. 1992). Based on the latter and considerable additional analysis, we give a complete description of the resonant casex=0.β=1. ϕ(t)=sint. In particular, it turned out that for μ ε (π 4. 1) there is a unique globally asymptotically stable 2π-periodic solutionx gm, which necessarily has deadzones (i.e.xμ (t) ≡c in certain intervals). In addition, the nonresonant case is solved by means of degree theory for multivalued maps, since in this situation a priori bounds can be found easily.

Notes: [Auszug] The allele sizes of polymorphic microsatellite repeats in DNA from human cancers were compared to normal DNA from the same patients. In 16 out of 196 paired samples (8%), we found evidence of an extra allele of a different size in the tumour which was not present in the normal DNA. Sequence ...

Notes: Abstract After inhibition by bis-p-nitrophenyl phosphate and subsequent staining for esterase using naphthol AS-D acetate as the substrate, a strong lysosomal esterase was demonstrated in the cauda epididymidis of mouse, rat, and man. Owing to its behaviour towards the classifying inhibitors eserine, diisopropyl fluorophosphate, bis-p-nitrophenyl phosphate, and p-chloromercuriphenylsulphonate, this lysosomal esterase was shown to be an acetylesterase (EC 3.1.1.6). Control experiments involving isoelectric focusing revealed that this acetylesterase was identical with the genetically defined homologues ES-17, ES-6, and ES-A4 in mouse, rat, and man, respectively.

Notes: Summary The crucial problem in anther culture of rye (Secale cereale L.) is the very low regeneration capacity. Our study was conducted to overcome this restriction. The plant material used included a doubled haploid line (DH), two single crosses between DH Unes, and a tetraploid Secale cereale L. population. The factors carbohydrate source, post-plating temperature treatment, and gelling agent were investigated. Substantial progress was achieved by substituting maltose for sucrose. Top rates of 49 % responding anthers and 20 % green plants were obtained from one of the single crosses after a post-plating cold treatment on geirrte solidified medium. We consider our results a methodical step forward in rye anther culture.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Trockene Ammoniumnitratproben (AN) mit einem Gehalt von 1, 3 bzw.
Notes: Abstract Dried samples of ammonium nitrate (AN) containing 1, 3, 5 mol% KNO3, RbNO3 and CsNO3 were investigated with temperature resolved X-ray diffraction. The samples were cycled with 2 temperature programs from −70° to 100° and −70° to 150°C, resp. DSC measurements were made for comparison. KNO3 extends the stability range of phase III. The supercooling observed with the transitions II/III and III/IV was so severe that the phases III and IV could be skipped leading to the transitions II/IV and III/V. No hindered nucleation was observed on heating. RbNO3 gives dried AN the properties of the humid nitrate. Phase III appeared on heating but was skipped on cooling, when the sample had been heated to 150°C. Hindered nucleation was observed. CsNO3 stabilizes the phases II and V. No strong hysteresis or supercooling was observed.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the dynamics of meiotic prophase I in neonatal ovaries from different wild rodent species, from a laboratory strain ofMus musculus and fromMus musculus × Mus spretus F1 hybrids. We found that almost all stages of prophase I were regularly present in neonatal ovaries from these species and that their transcriptional activity can be assessed by [3H]-uridine incorporation, indicating that postnatal analysis of meiotic chromosomes and synapsis may be conducted as an alternative to the investigation of foetal ovaries.

Notes: Abstract A new carboxylesterase isozyme (EC 3.1.1.1), designated ES-30, is described in mouse liver. Two phenotypes were distinguished, ES-30A, a possible null type, was found in SPE/Pas and in other lines derived fromMus spretus, and ES-30B was found in BALB/cJ and other laboratory inbred strains. ES-30B is characterized by a distinct electrophoretic band when stained using 5-bromoindoxyl acetate as the substrate. After isolation and purification from other esterases by ion-exchange chromatography and molecular sieving, the molecular mass was estimated by two independent methods to be 62 and 64 kDa, respectively. The activity of ES-30B is higher in adult males than in females and can be stimulatedin vivo by testosterone. The distribution of phenotypes on the progeny of a backcross series suggests a separate locus,Es-30, with the allele a for absence andb for presence of the isozyme. LocusEs-30 is shown to be closely linked toEs-2 and toEs-7 of cluster-2 on chromosome 8. The gene orderEs-9—Got-2—(Es-2, Es-7, Es-30) is suggested.
