    Notes: Electrical and optical measurements of ZnS:Mn alternating-current thin-film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) devices grown by atomic layer epitaxy provide evidence for the existence of space charge within the bulk ZnS layer. Blue luminescence is observed during the falling edge of an applied voltage pulse when the ACTFEL device is operated at low temperature. This blue luminescence is attributed to donor-acceptor pair radiative recombination in which chlorine is identified as the donor and a zinc vacancy as the acceptor. This luminescence identification leads to determination of the origin of space charge as arising from impact ionization of the zinc vacancy.

    Notes: Hot electron luminescence experiments are performed on ZnS alternating-current thin-film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) devices in order to determine the extent to which the electron distribution is heated. The luminescence spectrum is found to be broad and essentially featureless up to a high energy cutoff of approximately 3.7 eV, which is determined by optical absorption within the ZnS. This result indicates that under normal operating conditions in a ZnS ACTFEL device, a significant fraction of the electrons transported across the phosphor possess energies equal to or in excess of the ZnS band gap.

    Notes: A study of the relaxation luminance peak and the electro-optical aging effects in atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) normally doped ZnS:Mn alternating-current thin-film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) devices is presented. The relaxation luminance occurs when the applied voltage goes to zero. The changes in the luminance versus time L(t), current versus time I(t), and characteristics of luminance versus voltage, as a function of aging are discussed in terms of a model which includes bulk traps, space charge, and shallow trap levels. This relaxation luminance peak observed in ALE devices provides a means of gaining insight into ACTFEL devices.

    Notes: Abstract A sintering process is described for the production of n-type bismuth telluride alloys, in which the powders are deposited from a dielectric liquid in a controlled manner using an electrodispersion technique. The degree of orientation is determined using an X-ray diffraction method and also by measuring the Seebeck coefficient in the intrinsic region of conduction. It is found that the results from the two methods are consistent with one another if one assumes a structural model that is intermediate between those of the thin disc and the long bar.

We have studied the neural circuitry mediating ingestion and rejection in Aplysia using a reduced preparation that produces ingestion-like and rejection-like motor patterns in response to physiological stimuli. 2. We have characterized 3 buccal ganglion motor neurons that produce specific movements of the radula and buccal mass. B8a and B8b act to close the radula. B10 acts to close the jaws and retract the radula. 3. The patterns of activity in these neurons can be used to distinguish the ingestion-like and rejection-like motor patterns. B8a, B8b and B10 are active together during the ingestion-like pattern. Activity in B8a and B8b ends prior to the onset of activity in B10 during the rejection-like pattern. 4. Our data suggest that these neurons undergo similar patterns of activity in vivo. During both feeding-like patterns, the activity and peripheral actions of B8a, B8b, and B10 are consistent with radula movements observed during ingestion and rejection. In addition, the extracellular activity produced by these neurons is consistent with neural activity observed in vivo during ingestion and rejection. 5. Our data suggest that the different activity patterns observed in these motor neurons contribute to the different radula movements that distinguish ingestion from rejection.

    Notes: Abstract 1. We are studying the neural basis of consummatory feeding behavior in Aplysia using intact, freely moving animals. 2. Video records show that the timing of radula closure during the radula protraction-retraction cycle constitutes a major difference between ingestion (biting or swallowing) and rejection. During ingestion, the radula is closed as it retracts. During rejection, the radula is closed as it protracts. 3. We observed two patterns of activity in nerves which are likely to mediate these radula movements. Patterns I and II are associated with ingestion and rejection, respectively, and are distinguished by the timing of radula nerve activity with respect to the onset of buccal nerve 2 activity. 4. The association of ingestion with pattern I is maintained when the animal feeds on a polyethylene tube, the same food substrate used to elicit rejection responses. Under these conditions, pattern I is associated with either swallowing or no net tube movement. 5. Most transitions from swallowing to rejection were preceded by one or more occurrences of pattern I in which there was no net tube movement, suggesting that these transitions can be predicted. 6. Our data suggest that these two patterns can be used to distinguish ingestion from rejection.

    Notes: Abstract Murine B16 melanoma expresses the ganglioside. GM3. GM3 shed from tumor cells is immunosuppressive and promotes tumor growth1. Reduction or elimination of the shed GM3 could be therapeutic, and the anti-GM3 antibodies may reduce and clear the shed ganglioside. To test this hypothesis, mice were challenged with tumor cells, with or without inducing anti-GM3 antibody response. Since gangliosides are poor immunogens and T-cell independent antigens, an adjuvant (monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL), a non-toxic lipid A ofSalmonella), directed against B-cells, was employed. MPL was incorporated onto liposomes and into the surface membrane of B16 mouse melanoma cells; both are rich in GM3. C57BL/6J mice immunized with MPL-liposomes or MPL-B16 cells responded with elevated levels of anti-GM3 IgM. Non-immunized mice or mice immunized with B16 cells alone or ganglioside GM3 alone (without MPL) elicited poor anti-GM3 IgM response, confirming the GM3's immunologic crypticity and MPL's immunopotentiating effect. MPL's immunopotentiating effect was improved by coupling it to melanoma cell membranes C57BL/6J mice were immunized with irradiated B16 alone or MPL alone or MPL-conjugated irradiated B16. After three weekly immunizations, each mouse received a challenge dose of viable syngeneic B16. Neither MPL alone nor B16 alone had a significant effect on tumor growth or host survival; however, administration of MPL-conjugated B16 cells significantly prevented tumor growth and prolonged survival. Our results indicate that MPL-incorporated B16 cells augment the anti-GM3 IgM response, which may reverse GM3-induced immunosuppression by eliminating tumor-derived GM3, and restore immunocompetence.

    Notes: The functional capacity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) grown on Dacron (polyethylene terephthalate; PET) vascular prosthetic material was compared with the function of cells on smooth surfaced PET, tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS), and Natrix-coated TCPS. Prosthetic materials include two knitted fabrics (Bionit I and II) and two woven preparations (DeBakey Soft Woven and Extra Low Porosity). Two entities produced by HUVEC that influence blood coagulation were assessed: the procoagulant tissue factor (TF) and the anticoagulant prostacyclin (PGI2). Although TF activity was stimulated on all substrates by endotoxin (LPS), there was no difference among prostheses and no difference among smooth surface materials, but TF was reduced in cells on the prosthetic materials relative to those on smooth surface substrates. The reduced TF production by HUVEC on prosthetic material could be reversed by returning them to TCPS. In contrast, PGI2 production on prostheses was comparable to that on smooth surfaces for both stimulated and unstimulated cells. Stimulation with histamine (1 µM) gave a 2.4-fold increase in PGI2 whereas mellitin (10 µg/ml) increased production 12.5-fold. The differential response of HUVEC with regard to these two coagulation factors, one of which is secreted and the other membrane bound, may reflect the distorted shape of cells on fibers of the prosthesis. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
