Description:
The National Weather Service (NWS) Spaceflight Meteorology Group (SMG) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) creates daily weather forecasts for various shuttle landing sites in the Continental United States, Europe, and Africa. This effort was described by Bellue and Cunningham (1990) at the Fourteenth Annual Meeting of the National Weather Association. Since then, verification of these daily non-mission forecasts continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the SMG meteorologists and the flight controllers at JSC. Originally, these forecasts were done to assist forecasters in maintaining proficiency for shuttle landing sites between missions. The effort is now being used to improve forecast confidence and modify shuttle weather flight rules as needed.
