Notes: Acoustic emission signals were continuously monitored during fatigue crack propogation for two kinds of low strength steel placed in either laboratory air or 3.5% NaCl solution. The plastic deformation of the materials at the crack tips were compared by determining the changes in specimen geometry at the fracture surface in the thickness direction while the hydrogen distribution from the crack tip material was analysed by SIMS. The results showed that acoustic emission was less active in an aqueous solution than in air and that the plastic zone size was reduced in a corrosive medium. It was considered that the entrance of hydrogen into the crack tip during corrosion fatigue results in a decrease of material ductility, which lead to a low activity in acoustic emission.

Notes: Abstract Modulated PhotoReflectance (MPR) measurements on semiconductor wafers implanted with boron or silicon ions in the dose range 5×1010–5×1015 ions/cm2 are presented. Correspondingly, a one-dimensional theoretical multilayer model is established. In the theory, as the implant dose is lower than a critical value, the variation of the MPR signal is contributed mainly by the implanted defects and damages. However, when the dose is above the critical dose, the change of the MPR signal is chiefly due to the formation and growth of an amorphous layer. The theoretical results are in good agreement with those of experiments.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents a new type of local wall shear stress sensor made of a high-porosity material with filter grade 40 μn. The pressure variation caused by the shear stress acting on the surface can be transferred in this porous material, while the effect of the momentum change of the fluid is eliminated. Having neither protrusions nor cavities on the wall surface, the sensor presents little disturbance of the measured boundary layer. A pressure difference reading of the sensor is directly proportional to the local wall shear stress τ and the wall shear stress can be written as τ = C Δ P. The present investigation also deals with problems of sensor design and its influence on the performance of the sensor.

Notes: Abstract Y2BaCuO5YBa2Cu3O7-x (Y211/Y123) interfaces in melt-processed YBa2Cu3O7-x were studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Yttrium enrichment and barium depletion were observed locally at the Y211/Y123 interfaces where Y123 (001) facets were present. This effect may be interpreted as the result of lattice substitution of Ba by Y near these interfaces. Cation nonstoichiometry was found near Y211/Y123 interfaces where liquid phases (Cu-Ba-O) were present. This chemical disorder introduces numerous point defects in the Y123, and these defects may act as additional pinning sites alongwith stacking faults. A comparison of grain boundary (GB) chemical composition in polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x and YBa2Cu4O8(Y124), studied using nanoprobe parallel-detection electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), is presented. The studies of Y124 show that stoichiometric grain boundaries can also form weak links between superconducting grains. It is suggested that weak-link behavior is determined largely by misorientation at grain boundaries.

Notes: Abstract The deformation and fracture processes of a cross-weave carbon fibre/SiC composite prepared by a chemical vapour deposition process has been explored by interrupted-loading tests and SEM examination of cracking and fracture processes. The tensile stress-strain curves show non-linear behaviour associated with progressive matrix cracking and spalling, and the occasional fracture of a fibre. Re-loading curves and compressive stress-strain curves show linear behaviour. The fracture process does not involve cracking by a single dominant crack but occurs by the development of multiple damage sites operating around the transverse fractures of groups of four to eight fibres followed by longitudinal cracking at their fibre-matrix interfaces and temporary arrest of the cracks, until specimen failure occurs and there is massive fibre debonding and pull-out.

Notes: Abstract Compounds in the series Sm2Fe14−x Co x Al3 (x = 0, 1,2, 3, 4 and 5) have been shown to be of the Th2Zn17 structure. The Curie temperature is found to increase monotonically from a critical temperature,T c equal to 471 K for thex=0 sample, toT c=681 K for thex=5 sample. X-ray diffraction measurements of magnetic field oriented powders showed that all compounds exhibit a room temperature uniaxial anisotropy. Magnetization measurements show that the magnetic anisotropy of Sm2Fe14Al3 can be increased substantially by the substitution of even a small quantity of Co for Fe. Results are discussed in terms of possible applications of these compounds as particulate recording media.

Notes: Abstract In order to find out whether or not a cross-weave ceramic composite, graphite fibre/SiC matrix, would be prone to fatigue failure, tests in pulsating tension and pulsating compression have been carried out with the weave oriented in the 0/90 configuration. Both types of testing (at fairly high fractions of the ultimate monotonic failure load) cause creep strain, which is frequency dependent in tension, and ultimately complete failure can occur. Damage in pulsating tension is found to consist of cumulative microcracking and spalling, with the final failure mechanism broadly similar to that in monotonic deformation. Damage in pulsating compression appears dominated by delamination.

Notes: Abstract High-temperature creep in single crystals of Y3Al5O12 (YAG) was studied by constant strainrate compression tests. The creep resistance of YAG is very high: a stress of ~ 300 MPa is needed to deform at a strain rate of 10−6 (s−1) at a temperature as high as 1900 K (~0.84 T m, (melting temperature)). YAG deforms using the 〈111〉 {1¯10} slip systems following a power law with stress exponent n ~ 3 and activation energy E* ~ 720 kJ mol−1. However, a small dependence of n on temperature and of E* on stress was observed. This stress-dependence of activation energy combined with the observed dislocation microstructures suggests that the high creep resistance of YAG is due to the difficulty of dislocation glide as opposed to the difficulty of climb. Present dislocation creep data are compared with diffusion creep data and a deformation mechanism map is constructed. Large transition stresses (2−3 GPa for 10 μm grain size) are predicted, implying that deformation of most fine-grained YAG will occur by diffusion creep.
