    Notes: Formate hydrogenlyase (FHL) activity was induced in a strain of Escherichia coli S13 during anaerobic growth in yeast extract-tryptone medium containing 100 mM formate. The cells obtained at the optimum growth phase were immobilized in 2.5% (w/v) agar gel when 50-60% of the whole cell FHL activity was retained. The immobilized FHL system had good storage stability and recycling efficiency. In the lysis of formate, an increase of formate concentration to 1.18M increased QH2 (initial) value of the immobilized cell, and subsequently cells, hydrogen evolution, in general, ceased after 6 to 8 of incubation, resulting in incomplete lysis of formate. Presence of small amount of glucose (28 mM) was more or less quantitatively lysed with concomitant disappearence of glucose from the medium. Synthesis of formate from hydrogen and bicarbonate solution by the immobilized cells was also characterized. Presence of glucose (10 mM) in 50 mM bicarbonate solution stimulated formate synthesis by immobilized cells. The pH optimum range, Km, and specific activity of the immobilized cells for the lysis of formate were 6.8-7.2 0.4M, and 66 mL/g cell-h, respectively. The cells could fix hydrogen to the extent of 24.4% (w/w) of its own wet cell mass in a 72-h reaction cycle. Potentiality of the immobilized FHL system for biotechnological exploitation was discussed.

    Notes: Photoenolization of a ketone in its lowest triplet state was examined using the AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital method with complete geometry optimization at the configuration interaction level in the restricted Hartree-Fock frame. The theoretical barrier fits with a polynomial given by Eq. (1) and the probability of tunneling of hydrogen was calculated by the WKB method. The density of states above the zero-point level was estimated by the Whitten-Rabinovitch approximation. Rate constants for the hydrogen and deuterium-abstraction processes via tunneling were then computed at different temperatures. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Benzoxazole-2-thiol (1)/dibenzoyl peroxide (Bz2O2) was used as photoinitiator for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in bulk and in solution. The study of initiator decomposition was conducted spectrophotometrically. Kinetic studies of the photopolymerization indicated the formation of a complex between 1 and Bz2O2 in the stoichiometric ratio 2:1. The initiation is believed to occur via in situ formation of bis(benzoxazol-2-yl) disulfide in the presence of light.

    Notes: An explicit expression for the stiffness matrix is worked out for a triangular plate bending element considering the effect of transverse shear deformation. The element has twelve nodes on the sides and four nodes internal to it. The formulation is displacement type and the use of area co-ordinates makes it possible to obtain the shape functions explicitly. Separate polynomials are assumed for transverse displacement and rotations. To obtain the element stiffness matrix no matrix inversion or numerical integration need be carried out and only a few matrix multiplications of low order are necessary. The element, which is initially of thirty five degrees of freedom, can be reduced to a thirty degrees of freedom one by condensation of the internal nodes. An interesting feature of the element developed is that the values of nodal moments computed at a node point, considering different elements surrounding the node, do not vary significantly. Thus the nodal moments can be obtained directly at node points. Also, the element does not give rise to any inconvenience like locking, even for very thin plates. The straightforward approach in formation of the element stiffness will cut down the storage space considerably and will also call for less CPU time, thus making the use of the element well suited to low capacity computers. A number of plate bending problems have been worked out using the present element for different thickness to side ratios and a comparison has been made with the available results. Good accuracy has been observed in all cases, even for a small number of elements.

    Notes: A new formulation of an eighteen-degrees-of-freedom higher-order triangular plate bending element using triangular area co-ordinates is presented. The displacement function w is taken as the complete fifth-order polynomial in area co-ordinates. The normal slope along an edge of the triangle is constrained to vary cubically. The twenty-one constants are expressed explicity in terms of eighteen degrees of freedom. The element stiffness matrix is expressed as a product of component matrices for which explicit expressions are developed and presented. No numerical inversion or integration is necessary. The formulation is expected to be useful specially for microcomputers.

    Notes: Fiber-reinforced polymer composites show high specific strength and stiffness. The alignment of reinforcing fibers results in anisotropy of the material. This anisotropic behavior has been studied through dynamic mechanical analysis of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polypropylene (CFRPP) composites measured in both parallel and transverse directions to fiber arrangement. Several parameters such as storage modulus (E′), loss modulus (E″), loss factor or damping factor (tan δ), and complex viscosity (MU*) have been determined over a wide range of frequencies and at a fixed temperature. Relaxation and retardation spectra have been constructed for these composites. Modulus enhancement occurs due to stiffness imparted by the fiber and efficient stress transfer at the interface. Relaxation of the polymer matrix ceases with increase in the volume fraction of the fibers. α′-relaxation is observed for the composite having a 13% volume fraction of fibers and is ascribed to relaxation in the crystalline phase where the additional crystallinity arises out of the transcrystalline growth at the fiber-matrix interface. There exists a good correlation between theroretical curves with the experimental ones. Relaxation and retardation spectra and the dynamic parameters determined for these composites show a good correlation with the volume fraction of fibers as well as the direction of the applied load. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Condensation of N,N′-dibenzylethylenediamine (2) with 3,4-dibromobutyronitrile (3) gives 2-(1,4-dibenzyl-2-piperazinyl)acetonitrile (4), which, on catalytic reduction, debenzylation, cyclocarbamation and N-alkylation yields the target molecule 1 in 10.1% overall yield.

    Notes: Plate-bending elements with the inclusion of transverse shear effects are important in analysing problems of transverse bending of relatively thick plates. Several such elements are available. Recently another element with a triangular geometry has been suggested. The construction of the element stiffness matrix follows conventional procedure which involves rigorous matrix computations. An alternative method of obtaining the stiffness matrix explicitly for such an element is suggested in the present work. Thus the process of matrix inversion and a considerable degree of matrix multiplications can be avoided in constructing the element stiffness matrix. Explicit expressions worked out may be conveniently used in microcomputers.
