    Notes: A bubble column absorber was used to investigate kinetics of the reaction between carbon dioxide and aqueous solutions of diisopropanolamine (DIPA), by means of gas absorption experiments. These were conducted in the temperature range of 20 to 40°C, with DIPA concentrations from 5 to 500 mol/m3, and CO2 partial pressures between 5 and 101 kPa. A model based on the Danckwerts' surface reneval theory was used to analyze the experimental results and to determine the rate constant. The obtained data support the assumption of a second-order overall reaction, with the rate constants being well correlated by the Arrhenius equation: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ k_2 = 1.112 \times 10^{10} \exp \left({ - {{4848} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{4848} T}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} T}} \right).$$\end{document}

    Notes: Recent studies with myosin heavy chain mutants in the slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum and the yeast Saccharoymyces cerevisiae indicate that the myosin heavy chain gene is not essential for cell survival under laboratory growth conditions. However, cells lacking a normal myosin heavy chain gene demonstrate substantial alterations in growth and cell division. In this study, we report that a disruption mutant in the rod portion of the yeast myosin heavy chain gene, MYOl, produces abnormal chitin distribution and cell wall organization at the mother-bud neck in a high proportion of dividing cells. It is suggested that this phenotype is the cause of the cell division defect and the osmotic sensitivity of yeast MYOl mutants. In the absence of a normal MYOl polypeptide, yeast cells alter their cell type specific budding pattern. It is concluded that an intact myosin heavy chain gene is required to maintain the cell type specific budding pattern and the correct localization and deposition of chitin and cell wall components during cell growth and division.

    Notes: The content of vinculin, a cytoplasmic protein found in focal contacts and cell-cell junctions, was increased in BALB/c 3T3 cells by gene transfection. The vinculin expressed from the full length chicken cDNA, incorporated into focal contacts and its pattern was identical to that of the endogenous protein. Cells stably expressing vinculin by 20% over the endogenous level had altered locomotory properties. In these cells, the ability to migrate into a wound formed in a confluent monolayer and the locomotion of individual cells were drastically reduced. The results provide direct evidence that cell locomotion can be regulated by modulating vinculin expression. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Three selected peptidogycan monomers isolated from muramidase-digested Escherichia coli-sacculus were characterized by positive- and negative-ion 252Cf plasma-desorption mass spectrometry (PDMS). Dut to the high affinity of sugar moieties towards alkali cations multiple alkali attachment in PDMS can be a problem. Electrospray, nitrocellulose, nitrocellulose sandwich anthracene-9-carboxylic acid 3-(3-Pyridyl)acrylic acid deposition techniques were evaluated for the degree of (de)proltonation and cationization of the molecular species by sodium and/or potassium. Electrosprayed and nitrocellulose-deposited samples mainly exhibited intense cationized molecular ion species whereas anthracene-9-caboxylic acid-deposition sample show a similar pattern but with much lower intensity. An extension of the nitrocellulose deposition technique, the so-called nitrocellulose sandwich sample preparation reduced the aallkali attachment problem for these hydrophilic compounds. Application of the small molecule matrix 3-(3-pyridyl)acrylic acid yielded mass spectra with abundant [M+H]+ and [M—H]- ions in the positive- and in the negative-ion modes, respectively.

    Notes: The cigarette beetle pheromone (-)-serricorole (1) has been synthesized in 23% overall yield by an eight-step sequence starting from N-propionylsultam 3. The synthesis features asymmetric anti- and syn-aldolizations 3 → 4 and 8 → 9, a non-destructive N-acylsultam cleavage with lithiated ethylphenylsulfone (10 → 12), and the smooth, Ti-mediated cyclization of β-acyloxy-ketone 2 to dihydropyranone 14.

    Notes: syn-β-Acyloxy-ketones 6 and an anti-β-acyloxy-ketone 17 undergo smooth intramolecular enolate/ester condensations 6 → 18 and 17 → 19 when treated with TiCl4/EtN(i-Pr)2. Thus, tri- and tetrasubstituted cis- or trans-2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-ones are easily prepared in a stereoselective manner.

    Notes: The structure of peregrine (1), a norditerpenoid alkaloid isolated from Delphinium peregrinum var. elongatum BOISS., was revised on the basis of the 1H-COSY, HMQC, HMBC, and ROESY NMR spectra and of the X-ray analysis of its parent alcohol 2. Some of the 13C-NMR resonances of 1 and the related alkaloids peregrine alcohol (2), 14-O-acetylperegrine (3), bicoloridine (4), bicoloridine alcohol (5), 6-O-acetylbicolorine (6), bicolorine (7), and 14-O-acetylbicolorine (8), were also reassigned.

    Notes: Hopping conductivity becomes activationless (metallic) when twice the intersite coupling supercedes the reorganization energy. Consistent with this idea, activationless electron pair transfer may be considered as a condition for the appearance of superconductivity. For electron pairs the condition is slightly more complicated than for single electrons. The activation energy depends on the relative energies between ionic states and a valence bond state. The latter serves as an intermediate state, contributing to the disappearance of the activation barrier. In A3C60, that pairing occurs because the 1Ag state of the negative ions C602- and C604- is stabilized by correlation effects and is the ground state. The correlation effects are primarily due to the closeness in energy and different parity of the tlu and tlg orbitals, which are partly occupied in the negative ions, but empty in neutral C60. The small interelectronic repulsion and the polarization energy from the environment also contribute to the stability of the evenly negative ions. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
