Notes: We shall start with very small systems like H2 and H3, computed with very accurate methods (Hylleraas-CI) or atomic systems up to Zn with accurate methods (CI), then move to more complex ones, like C60, but now with somewhat less accurate methods, specifically Hartree-Fock with density functionals, the latter for the correlation energy but not for the exchange energy. For even more complex tasks like geometry optimization of C60, we have resorted to even simpler and parametrized methods, like local density functionals. Then, we could use quantum mechanics either to provide interaction potentials for classical molecular dynamics or to directly solve dynamical systems, in a quantum molecular dynamics approximation. Having demonstrated that we can use the computational output from small systems as input to larger ones, we discuss in detail a new model for liquid water, which is borne out entirely from ab initio methods and nicely links spectroscopic, thermodynamics, and other physicochemical data. Concerning time scales, we use classical molecular dynamics to determine friction coefficients, and with these we perform stochastic dynamic simulations. The use of simulation results from smaller systems to provide inputs for larger system simulations is the “global simulation” approach, which, today, with the easily available computers, is becoming more and more feasible. Projections on simulations in the 1996-1998 period are discussed, new computational areas are outlined, and a N4 complexity algorithm is compared to density functional approaches. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Algorithms to reduce the space needed to store information either in memory or magnetic media are presented. These algorithms were designed to pack and unpack two common kinds of data types: sequences of sets of integers that change in a regular fashion and real numbers of fixed absolute precision. One typical application of these techniques is in the storage of electron repulsion integrals in ab initio calculations, where the indices of the basis functions are a good example of data of the first type and the integrals of the second type. In this case, savings in storage space of 50% or more can be obtained with reasonable accuracies in the energies. FORTRAN subroutines are presented for packing/unpacking indices and integrals both in the IBM and IEEE 754 64-bit floating point formats. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Boron, aluminum, and gallium tristriflate are new effective catalysts for the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF). High-molecular-weight polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) was obtained in excellent yield in the bulk polymerization of THF at ambient temperature with all three catalysts. The PTHF samples were characterized and some of their thermodynamic and mechanical properties were investigated and discussed.

Notes: Imidazole (Imz)-catalysed hydrolysis of benzoate esters proceeds via the intermediate formation of N-benzoylimidazoles. This paper considers the second step of this reaction, viz., Imz-catalysed hydrolysis of N-(4-X-benzoyl)imidazoles, X = CH3, H, Cl, CN and NO2, and N-(disubstituted benzoyl)imidazoles, 2-chloro-4-nitro, 2, 4-dinitro and 3,5-dinitro, in water-acetonitrile mixtures (10% or 14%, v/v, in organic solvent). On the basis of catalytic rate constants and the kinetic solvent isotope effect, it is shown that catalysis by Imz is of the general-base type. Unexpectedly, the hydrolysis of N-(2,4-dinitrobenzoyl)imidazole was found to be slower than that of N-(4-nitrobenzoyl)imidazole. It is shown that this reactivity order is due to a combination of a steric effect and stabilization of the reactant state due to a donor-acceptor interaction between the Imz moiety and the 2,4-dinitrophenyl ring.

Notes: The paper provides an extension to the one-dimensional TLM diffusion model. The extended diffusion node presented here models the exact transport equation with diffusion drift and recombination of charge carriers in semiconductors. A general algorithm for providing a numerical solution to the transport phenomena is also presented here. The analytical solution for infinitely long semiconductors is compared with the TLM numerical results.

Notes: The effect of sodium fluoride, sodium bromide, tetramethyl ammonium chloride, tetramethyl ammonium bromide and sodium formate on both precipitation and θ-temperatures of poly(ethylene glycol) (Mw = 4000) in aqueous solution have been determined. Curves have been drawn to represent the effect of such ions on both the θ and the precipitation temperatures of the polymer. The effectiveness increases in the order (CH3)4 NBr, NaBr, (CH3)4NCl, NaF and HCOONa. The Mw-temperatures obtained at infinite dilution are 445 K for NaBr, NaF, (CH3)4 NBr and (CH3)4NCl and 415 K for HCOONa.

Notes: This study examines the evolution of mitochondria in the follicular cells during the development of the ovarian follicle in the teleostean fish Epiplatys spilargyreus. The mitochondria are few in number until the end of previtellogenesis; their matrix is dense, and their cristae are well developed. They proliferate during vitellogenesis and then are modified by deterioration of their matrix. Multilamellar structures are organized in the vacuolized mitochondria. During postvitellogenesis, these modifications become more advanced. The mitochondria degenerate, leaving vacuoles that contain heterogeneous structures, which will be released into the intercellular spaces. At the end of these mitochondrial transformations, the follicular cells degenerate. They release the elements which will participate in forming the secondary envelope. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Venous blood samples were taken from patients naturally infected with the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Two types of malaria pigment (MP) particles have been demonstrated in intraerythrocytic asexual forms (trophozoites and schizonts), while a single type was detected in gametocytes. Type I MP particles, found in both asexual and sexual forms, are electron-dense. It is suggested that these are proteinaceous and may be intermediate, utilizable metabolic products that serve as a food reserve during development of the parasite in the human host and also during the growth cycle of the sexual form in the mosquito. In asexual forms, type I particles occur within food vacuoles (FV) containing semidigested hemoglobin (Hg), while they are unenveloped in the cytoplasm of the sexual forms. Type II MP particles, found in electron-lucent residual bodies, are crystalloid and of low electron density. It is suggested that these are the final, waste product of Hg digestion in the asexual forms. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Ultrastructural alterations of human erythrocytes infected with asexual forms of Plasmodium falciparum were studied in naturally infected Saudi patients. These included surface knobs and nodules as well as invaginations associated with cytopasmic vesicles observed in erythrocytes infected with asexual forms of the parasites. Such nodules and surface invaginations have been previously described only in erythrocytes infected with P. ovale and P. vivax, respectively. Within the cytoplasm of infected erythrocytes were membrane-bound clefts, similar to those that appear to be a common characteristic in all red cells infected with malaria parasites. Vacuolations were often seen in the peripheral cytoplasm and may represent hemolyzed areas. Collapsed cells with an internal-lucent interior and surrounded by an irregularly folded membrane may represent completely hemolyzed erythrocytes. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
