    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a new method, single-link cluster analysis (SLC), to evaluate percursory quiescence for shallow earthquakes in sixteen subduction zones, using data from the ISC catalog. To define quiescent regions, we divided the catalog into time intervals with a durationT, overlapping byT/2. We considered all earthquakes having magnitudes larger than some magnitudeM min, lying within a specified distance of a great circle which is approximately coincident with the trench near a subduction zone. Within each time interval we connected or ‘linked’ all earthquakes lying within some cutoff distanced of one another. We then projected all these links onto the great circle, and defined a region to be quiescent if it was not covered by the projection of any links. For this study,T was two years,M min wasm b =4.9, and we variedd from 100 to 400 km. We defined an earthquake as ‘following quiescence’ if it occurred within two years following, and within 75 km of a quiescent zone as defined above. The primary conclusion of this study was that earthquakes with surface wave magnitudes 7.2 and greater were about 5–15% more likely to follow quiescence than were the smaller background earthquakes withm b 〉-4.9. A chi-squared analysis shows that this result is significant at the 99% level. In contrast, earthquakes with surface wave magnitude of 6.7 to 7.1 were no more likely to follow quiescence than were background earthquakes. Of sixteen individual regions, Central America, Japan, and Peru-Chile were the only regions where large earthquakes were more likely to occur following quiescence than were background earthquakes. For a cutoff link length of 300 km, only in Central America was the difference between large earthquakes and background earthquakes significant at the 95% level of significance. For a cutoff link length of 250 km, the significance level exceeded 95% only in Japan. The SLC method is an objective, quantitative method for evaluating large data catalogs, or for monitoring quiescence in regions where quiescence is conjectured to precede large earthquakes.

    Notes: Summary Diffuse intercellular immunofluorescence staining of type VI collagen was found in the experimentally thickened vascular wall and in control blood vessel tissues as well, superimposed by more intense staining around basement membranes. While the basement membrane staining disappeared in advanced mural thickenings, the diffusely distributed network of type VI collagen remained.

    Notes: Abstract The surface of the colonial ascidianEudistoma olivaceum (Van Name) is almost completely free of fouling organisms. I provide evidence that this epibiont-free surface is maintained by the alkaloids, Eudistomins G and H. These alkaloids were extracted from colonies collected in the shallow subtidal of Indian River Lagoon, Florida. USA, in November 1987. Concentrations of less than one-fifth of those found in the living ascidian inhibited the settlement of the larvae of five invertebrate species relative to appropriate controls in laboratory and field trials. Standard pharmacological assays have revealed that Eudistomins G and H were not the most biologically active of the eudistomins, indicating that these standard assays are not necessarily good predictors of antifouling activity. In an examination of possible alternate roles for these eudistomins, they proved ineffective as a fish antifeedant. PinfishLagadon rhomboides consumed agar pellets to which Eudistomins G and H had been added at concentrations 10- to 100-fold higher than those effective against settling larvae. These findings indicate that biologically active marine natural products may serve specific ecological roles.

    Notes: Abstract Crustacean microzooplankton were the main prey of larval Trachurus declivis collected in the summers of 1988, 1989 and 1990 from coastal waters of eastern Tasmania. The diet was dominated by harpacticoids (Microsetella rosea), cyclopoids (mainly Oithona spp.), calanoids and the calyptopis stage of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes australis. Bivalve veligers were occasionally eaten. Diets of larvae were affected by interannual variations in plankton composition, particularly in 1989 when intrusions of low-nutrient subtropical water exclused large zooplankters (e.g. N. australis) from the study area. Larvae≤6 mm selected for copepod nauplii; all larvae selected for M. rosea, cyclopoids, and the calyptopis stage of N. australis. Even though calanoids were a major prey taxon, there were proportionally fewer eaten than were present in the environment. In all, 78% of larvae taken during the daytime had food in their stomachs, as opposed to 38% of the larvae from night samples. Feedmid-morning and late afternoon. A gut evacuation rate of ∼4 to 6 h was estimated. We calculated that the larvae ate between 9 and 13% of their body weight in food per day. The larvae of T. declivis in this study were not sufficiently abundant to have an impact on their prey.

    Notes: Abstract Tritiated thymidine incorporation (TTI) into DNA was used to estimate bacterial productivity in sediment and water samples from two sites in Langebaan Lagoon, South Africa. Routine analysis of isotope dilution showed seasonal variations of approximately threefold in the thymidine precursor pool sizes for bacterial assemblages from each site. Dual label incorporation of [3H]-thymidine and 14C-leucine into DNA and protein, respectively, showed that pelagic but not sediment assemblages were in a balanced state of growth during TTI. This is the first report of dual label measurements of bacterial production in sediments. Sediments supported bacterial productivities that exceeded those in the water column by factors from five- to 950-fold, whereas bacterial abundance supported by sediments exceeded that in the water column by more than 3 orders of magnitude. Estimates of bacterial productivities in sediments were coincident with levels of organic content in sediments, but not with bacterial abundance. Measurements of TTI activity for 5 different benthic microhabitats at one lagoon site showed highest activity associated with seagrass beds (2.11 ± 0.84 nmol thymidine hours−1 g-1 dry weight), whereas activities decreased with depth (0.46 ± 0.21 nmol thymidine hours−1 g−I dry weight) below sediment surface.

    Notes: Abstract The Austrian reconnaissance study of stream-sediment composition — more than 30000 clay-fraction samples collected over an area of 40000 km2 — is summarized in an atlas of regional maps that show the distributions of 35 elements. These maps, rich in information, reveal complicated patterns of element abundance that are difficult to compare on more than a small number of maps at one time. In such a study, multivariate procedures such as simultaneous R-Q mode components analysis may be helpful. They can compress a large number of variables into a much smaller number of independent linear combinations. These composite variables may be mapped and relationships sought between them and geological properties. As an example, R-Q mode components analysis is applied here to the Grazer Paläozoikum, a tectonic unit northeast of the city of Graz, which is composed of diverse lithologies and contains many mineral deposits.

    Notes: Abstract Two nonpenetrating membrane probes, p-azidobenzylphlorizin (p-AzBPhz) and 4,4′-diisothiocyano-2,2′-stilbene disulfonate (DIDS), have been shown in earlier studies to induce dose-dependent changes in red blood cell (RBC) shape and volume at the same low concentrations that inhibit anion transport. In the present work, these ligand-induced morphology and rheology changes were studied using video digital image morphometry (VDIM) and microfiltration techniques. The results of these experiments corroborate our earlier investigation. RBCs were filmed using a Nomarski optics microscope with video camera attachment and cell size and shape changes were computer analyzed using VDIM. Low μm p-AzBPhz or DIDS levels caused collapse of the cell's biconcave structure and cell flattening occurred within 1–2 sec after drug exposure. Higher doses of either agent converted cells to a new steady-state in which a concurrent limited increase in erythrocyte volume and blunt membrane protrusions were produced. These changes were reversed in less than 2 sec by washing the drug from the membrane. Both ligands increased the deformability of RBCs in a dose-dependent manner as determined by filtration through Nuclepore polycarbonate filters (3 μm pore diameter). The improvement in deformability of drug-treated sickle cells was much more dramatic than for normal cells at low p-AzBPhz concentrations. These results support our earlier conclusions that the ligands, through a common interaction with band 3, induce volume-associated cytoskeletal alterations which lead to changes in morphology and flexibility.

    Notes: Summary A rapidly acquired partial resistance to the replicase antagonist, ethidium bromide (EB), seen by Spiegelman and coresearchers in Qβ RNA variants competitively replicating under defined conditions in vitro, reflected existence of a pool of mutant RNA molecules, preadapted to EB, and their cross-propagation from the pre-EB optimum species, MDV-1, and from other kindred variants, some of which remained undetected, according to this quantitative analysis of midivariant RNA replication kinetics. DNAlike features of their evolution, such as the cloning of variants from an MDV-1 subtype and a complicance with the fundamental theorem of natural selection, resulted from the suppression, both real and apparent, of intrinsic RNA heterogeneity through sampling and detection methods, and also by the ascendency of self-propagation over cross-propagation with advancement of a superior variant. The deficit in mean polymer fitness, compared with optimum levels, determines the lower limit of this heterogeneity. Stability conditions for frequency equilibrium and strategies for counteracting viral drug resistance have been considered.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to elucidate the genetic origin of minor histocompatibility (H) antigens. Toward this end common inbred mouse strains, distinct subspecies, and species of the subgenus Mus were examined for expression of various minor H antigens. These antigens were encoded by the classical minor H loci H-3 and H-4 or by newly identified minor H antigens detected as a consequence of mutation. Both minor H antigens that stimulate MHC class I-restricted cytotoxic T cells (Tc) and antigens that stimulate MHC class II-restricted helper T cells (Th) were monitored. The results suggested that strains of distinct ancestry commonly express identical or cross-reactive antigens. Moreover, a correlation between the lack of expression of minor H antigens and ancestral heritage was observed. To address whether the antigens found on unrelated strains were allelic with the sensitizing minor H antigens or a consequence of antigen cross-reactivity, classical genetic segregation analysis was carried out. Even in distinct subspecies and species, the minor H antigens always mapped to the site of the appropriate minor H locus. Together the results suggest: 1 minor H antigen sequences are evolutionarily stable in that their pace of antigenic change is slow enough to predate subspeciation and speciation; 2 the minor H antigens originated in the inbred strains as a consequence of a rare polymorphism or loss mutation carried in a founder mouse stock that caused the mouse to percieve the wild-type protein as foreign; 3 there is a remarkable lack of antigenic cross-reactivity between the defined minor H antigens and other products.
