Description: The Drosophila abelson (abl) gene encodes the homolog of the mammalian c-abl cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase and is an essential gene for the development of viable adult flies. Three second-site mutations that suppress the lethality caused by the absence of abl function have been isolated, and all three map to the gene enabled (ena). The mutations are recessive embryonic lethal mutations but act as dominant mutations to compensate for the neural defects of abl mutants. Thus, mutations in a specific gene can compensate for the absence of a tyrosine kinase.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gertler, F B -- Doctor, J S -- Hoffmann, F M -- CA-07175/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA-09135/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA-49582/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1990 May 18;248(4957):857-60.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, University of Wisconsin, Madison 53706.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2188361" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Alloimmune mice (mice that have been exposed to cells from another murine strain) were shown to make antibodies against gp120 and p24 of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and mice of the autoimmune strains MRL-lpr/lpr and MRL-(+)/+ made antibodies against gp120. This is surprising because the mice were not exposed to HIV. Furthermore, anti-anti-MHC antibodies (molecules that have shapes similar to those of major histocompatibility complex molecules) were detected in both alloimmune sera and MRL mice. These results are discussed in the context of a possible role for allogeneic stimuli in the pathogenesis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, as suggested by an idiotypic network model.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kion, T A -- Hoffmann, G W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1991 Sep 6;253(5024):1138-40.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Microbiology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1909456" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Results of a three-year field study of family-level patterns of ecological diversity of dinosaurs in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana and North Dakota show no evidence (probability P 〈 0.05) of a gradual decline of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous. Stratigraphic reliability was maintained through a tripartite division of the Hell Creek, and preservational biases were corrected for by comparison of results only from similar fades as well as through the use of large-scale, statistically rigorous survey and collection procedures. The findings are in agreement with an abrupt extinction event such as one caused by an asteroid impact.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sheehan, P M -- Fastovsky, D E -- Hoffmann, R G -- Berghaus, C B -- Gabriel, D L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1991 Nov 8;254(5033):835-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Geology, Milwaukee Public Museum, WI 53233, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11536489" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
