Notes: Two different electron density reconstruction methods for 8-keV neutral lithium beam probing have been developed for the Compact Helical System (CHS). Density dependences on emission and ionization processes are included by using effective rate coefficients obtained from the collisional radiative model. Since the two methods differ in the way the local beam density in the plasma is determined, the methods have different applicable electron densities. The beam attenuation is calculated by iteration from the electron density profile in method I. In method II, the beam remainder at the observation point z is determined by integrating the Li i emission intensity from z toward the position of emission tail-off. At the emission tail-off, the fast lithium beam is completely attenuated. Selecting an appropriate method enables us to obtain edge electron density profile well inside the last closed flux surface for various ranges of plasma densities (1012–5×1013 cm−3). The electron density profiles reconstructed by these two different methods are in good agreement with each other and are consistent with results from ruby laser Thomson scattering.

Notes: A plasma source based on an inductive breakdown of a supersonic gas puff is described. The source was developed to provide an anode plasma for an annular, extraction geometry, magnetically insulated ion diode. In this source, plasmas with densities of 1013 cm−3 were generated and accelerated to velocities of 20–30 cm/μs; plasma fluxes of 10–40 A/cm2 were obtained. Operating the source under the diode insulating field effect, plasma fluxes above 100 A/cm2 were observed. When the plasma source was used in conjunction with a magnetically insulated diode gap, intense ion beams with proton fluxes of more than 100 A/cm2, energies of 100 keV, and beam pulses longer than 1 μs were extracted.

Notes: Summary Dynamic changes in human Langerhans cells (LCs) were studied with OK T6, anti-HLA-DR antibody, and Lag antibody in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Both T6-positive (T6+) cells and Lag-positive (Lag+) cells in the epidermis decreased in number from 0 to 48 h, but then gradually increased after day 7 of ACD. Lag+ cells after day 7 manifested a variety of staining intensities from weak to strong. It was also shown, after day 7, that some T6+ cells were Lag negative whereas all Lag+ cells were T6 positive. Flow cytometric analysis suggested that Lag-strongly-positive cells and Lag-weakly-positive cells belonged to the same population, and that the relative amount of Lag antigens in T6+ LCs gradually increased after day 7. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that the Lag-strongly-positive cells contained numerous Lag-reactive Birbeck granules (BGs) whereas the Lag-weakly-positive cells contained fewer BGs in the cytoplasm. In some Lag-weakly-positive cells, no BGs were detected.

Notes: Abstract The substrate specificity of maleate hydratase from Arthrobacter sp. strain MCI2612 was examined with maleate and its derivatives. Maleate hydratase was shown to catalyze the hydration of maleate, chloromaleate, bromomaleate, and citraconate. Water was added trans to chloromaleate and bromomaleate to synthesize the (−)-erythro-β-substituted derivatives of d-malate. (R)-(−)-Citramalate was synthesized from citraconate by using maleate hydratase. Many organic acids such as acetylenedicarboxylate, l(+)-, d(−)-, and meso-tartarate, and cis-, trans-epoxysuccinate inhibited competitively the formation of d-malate from maleate.

Notes: Summary A solution is obtained for the second mixed boundary value problem with two boundaries loaded with external forces, and the other two boundaries simply supported. A rational mapping function formed as a sum of fractional expressions and complex stress functions is used for the analysis. A closed form solution can be obtained under uniform tensile and shearing loadings. These solutions are applicable to crack problems in linear elastic fracture mechanics. In order to illustrate the general solution, a double connected region is considered, in which interaction between a square hole with a crack extension and another crack is investigated. Stress distributions and stress intensity factors are obtained.

Notes: Summary In order to predict the material temperature throughout the hot rolling process of aluminium, a numerical model is proposed in a theoretical as well as simple way. Using the model, the possibility of the improvement in productivity by reforming the finishing mill arrangement is examined under aspect of the control of material temperature. The results so obtained show the positive effect of increasing the number of finishing mills on the productivity.

Keywords: Edge density profile ; magnetic axis shift

Notes: Abstract Edge density profiles were measured during natural and forced magnetic axis shifts in the lowaspect-ratio heliotron/torsatron CHS, using an 8 keV fast neutral lithium beam probe. The Shafranov shift of the magnetic axis (and hence the dislocation of the LCFS) that was negligible for a low density ECH discharge became substantial (∼4.5 cm) for a high density NBI discharge (〈n e〉∼2.5× 1013cm−3) and the corresponding radius of the LCFS increased about 1.2 cm in major radius compared to the vacuum case. For NBI discharges with different settings of the vacuum magnetic axisR ax (fixed during the discharge), the measured edge density profiles indicated reasonable agreement between the theoretically and experimentally obtained LCFS radii for 90 cm 〈R ax〈101.6cm, while forR ax〈90 cm the measured radius was 10% larger than expected. When a change ofR ax from 94.7 cm to 89.9 cm during a discharge was imposed externally, a well behaved plasma boundary moved inward smoothly by about 7.5 cm, while the steepness of the edge density profile changed for different values ofR ax. The steepest profile was attained forR ax=92.1 cm when the highest energy content and average density were achieved.
