    Notes: We describe the design of a new system for the Czochralski growth of single crystals of intermetallic materials under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Particular attention has been paid to an arrangement for very uniform movement of the pulling mechanism. We report the growth of large high-quality single crystals of MnSi.

    Notes: Time dependence of magnetization in ferromagnetic materials was first described towards the end of the 19th century. Subsequently, two types of mechanisms responsible for time dependent behavior were identified and became known as "diffusion'' and "fluctuation'' after-effect or viscosity. The former depends on thermally induced motion of impurity atoms. The latter is a consequence of thermal activation of irreversible domain processes such as domain-wall motion and the nucleation of domains of reverse magnetization. Fluctuation viscosity affects, to a greater or smaller extent, all magnetic materials subject to hysteresis. In the late 1940s descriptions of magnetic viscosity in terms of fluctuation fields (Néel) and activation energy distributions (Street and Woolley) were developed. The two approaches will be described. An analysis of the time dependent phenomena exhibited by magneto-optical films will be presented as a simple example of the application of activation energy modeling.

    Notes: The combination of zone refining and electrotransport techniques is considered with the aim of obtaining an improved method for the growth and ultrapurification of metallic crystals. A complete ultrahigh vacuum crystal growth system using induction heated vertical float zoning with up to 400 A of electrotransport current simultaneously passing through the molten zone has been developed. Preliminary tests on nickel show that the two techniques are indeed compatible and the purification process is substantially enhanced by their combination.

    Notes: This project developed an automated controller based on an artificial neural network and evaluated its applicability in a real-time environment. This capability was developed within the context of a small angle negative ion source on the Discharge Test Stand at Los Alamos. The controller processes information obtained from the beam current wave form, developing a figure of merit (fom) to determine the ion source operating conditions. The fom is composed of the magnitude of the beam current, the stability of operation, and the quietness of the beam. Using no knowledge of operating conditions, the controller begins by making of rough scan of the four-dimensional operating surface. This surface uses as independent variables the anode and cathode temperatures, the hydrogen flow rate, and the arc voltage. The dependent variable is the fom described above. Once the rough approximation of the surface has been determined, the network formulates a model from which it determines the best operating point. The controller takes the ion source to that operating point for a reality check. As real data is fed in, the model of the operating surface is updated until the neural network's model agrees with reality. The controller then uses a gradient ascent method to optimize the operation of the ion source. Initial tests of the controller indicate that it is remarkably capable. It has optimized the operation of the ion source on six different occasions bringing the beam to excellent quality and stability.

    Notes: This paper treats a free surface between a liquid metal and an inert gas in the presence of a magnetic field with arbitrary orientation relative to the free surface. The free surface intersects a perfectly conducting surface at rest and an insulated surface rotating about an axis which is perpendicular to both surfaces and which is far from the liquid-metal region. This problem models free surfaces in liquid-metal sliding electric contacts for motors and generators. There is a primary azimuthal liquid-metal velocity which is driven by the rotation of the insulated surface, and there is a secondary flow which involves radial and axial velocities and which is driven by the centrifugal force due to the primary velocity. The free-surface positions, pressures, and velocities are presented as functions of the magnetic-field orientation and strength.

    Notes: A low-resistance electrical contact is provided by a liquid metal in a small gap between the perimeter of a rotating disk (rotor) and a static surrounding surface (stator). The liquid metal extends radially inward on both sides of the rotor to free surfaces with an inert cover gas, and there is a strong axial magnetic field. This paper presents results for the shape of the free surface and for the liquid-metal velocity and pressure adjacent to the free surface. The results depend on the magnetic-field strength, the surface tension, the wetting angle at the free-surface–solid intersections, and the voltage difference between the stator and rotor. The copper stator and rotor are perfect conductors compared to the liquid metal. Two cases are considered, with and without electrically insulating coatings on the sides of the rotor.
