    Notes: The deposition of thin films in a hot-wall multiwafer low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) reactor is an important unit operation in the manufacture of modern integrated circuits. In this article, our previously published model for the multiwafer LPCVD reactor has been combined with in-situ temperature measurements to accurately predict the axial and radial film thickness distributions for a polysilicon deposition process. The model describes in detail multicomponent mass transport, the reactor's thermal environment based on in-situ temperature measurements, and the reactor geometry including inlet and outlet sections as well as downstream injectors. Model predictions were compared with experimental data from two industrial-scale polysilicon reactors at SEMATECH and from a smaller research reactor. Approximate scale-up rules for the important special case of larger wafers were derived from the model equations and tested by simulation. The rules compare well with the results from a nonlinear program in which the axial variation of film growth rate was minimized.

    Notes: The structure formed in the coagulation stage of the spinning process of poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) fiber is studied by electron microscopy. An oriented network of microfibrils with typical fibril diameters of about 80-100Å is observed. We suggest that these microfibrils are the fundamental structural elements of the fiber. Thus, knowledge of the mechanism by which this initial structure is formed may allow for better control of final fiber properties. The relation of structure formation during coagulation to the phase diagram of a rigid polymer solution and to the kinetic mechanism of the phase transition is discussed.

    Notes: The extent of molecular demixing of poly[cross-(ethyl acrylate)]-inter-poly[cross-(methyl methacrylate)] interpenetrating polymer networks (PEA/PMMA IPNs), of mid-range composition was investigated by decrosslinking and/or annealing using dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. A single broad transition characteristic of extensive but incomplete molecular mixing was observed for the PEA/PMMA IPN. The presence of crosslinking in both phases of an IPN enhances the mutual miscibility of the polymers. Through the use of a labile crosslinker, acrylic acid anhydride (AAA), polymer networks may be decross-linked, allowing the chains to separate and form two distinct phases. Annealing further sharpens the transitions, and phase separation becomes most pronounced when decrosslinking is followed by annealing.

    Notes: The equilibrium phase behavior of the partially miscible system polystyrene-polybutadiene-chloroform was studied at 25°C and 1 atm pressure by using gel permeation chromatography to analyze the conjugate phases. Three narrow molecular weight distribution samples of each polymer were used to provide nine examples of the system for study. The Flory-Huggins theory was used to determine the polymer-polymer interaction parameter χ23, When literature values of the two polymer-solvent interaction parameters χ12 and χ13 were used, the χ23 values generally were found to be negative and to show no distinct concentration dependence. No significant improvement was found when the literature value of only the polybutadiene-chloroform interaction parameter was used to simultaneously generate values of χ23 and χ12. Values of χ23 at the critical point, χ23,cr, were found to increase with increasing polymer concentration.

    Notes: The diversities existing among published kinetic studies on activated anionic polymerization of ε-caprolactam are closely examined. A kinetic model derived from a regular, linear reversible reaction mechanism is employed to explain the experimentally observed autocatalytic character of the polymerization system and to examine the dependence of the apparent activation energy on the experimental method. Several existing kinetic models tested with our experimental data show that the autocatalytic type rate equation best describes the polymerization process.

    Notes: The effect of ductility on fatigue behavior was studied using two DGEBA-based (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) epoxies: a ductile Epon 815/Versamid 140 and a brittle Epon 828/Epon Z. Failure modes were different although normalized stress-life relations were similar for both resins. Two competing failure mechanisms were identified: viscoelastic creep, and nucleation and coalescence into a main crack of microcracks. No signs of crazing or fibrillation were detected. The plastic elongation during fatigue was larger in Epon 815/Versamid 140. Fracture sources showed cracked material surrounded by a region of stable growth of the main crack. In the brittle Epon 828/Epon Z cracked material was scarce and the crack initiation region was clean, especially at high stress levels. Discontinuous crack growth bands and striations were seen in the stable crack growth regions. During unstable propagation the crack advanced at different levels joined by deep cleavage steps. Branching of the main crack occurred only in the brittle resin at the final stage of propagation.

    Notes: This paper explores the concept of continuously extruding reacting polyurethane foams. The control of the process is hampered by the fact that the state of the conversion of the extrudate is not directly observable. We present the general concept, describe an experimental apparatus, present a mathematical model of the process, and report on some initial experimentation. In the experimental work, low density (0.5 g/cc) polyurethane foam was extruded in a cylindrical cross section at a rate of 250 g/min. Maximum run time was thirty minutes. In all cases, the experiment had to be stopped due to problems in the process. Problems requiring further investigation were identified: channelling of uncured liquid foam around the solid cured foam, poor skin quality due to adhesion of the foam to the wall, and the general lack of observability of the conversion field.

    Notes: A series of bismaleimide resin systems has been examined in order to identify the molecular features responsible for the mechanical response of these materials. A range of network structures was produced both by formulation of resins with different ratios of N,N′-bismaleimido-4,4′-diphenylmethane (BMI) and methylene dianiline (MDA), and by the use of different thermal processing cycles. Spectrographic and chromatographic techniques were used to study the reactions that occurred during the cure. Two principal reactions were confirmed: a Michael addition reaction which provides linear chain growth, and an addition reaction which produces crosslinking through the double bonds of the maleimide group. In general, curing at a lower temperature or increasing the MDA content served to favor chain extension over crosslinking, which might be expected to increase molecular mobility in the resin.

    Notes: Molecular orientation imparted during film fabrication is known to have a major effect on mechanical and thermal properties of both glassy and semicrystalline polymers. A three-variable Box-Behnken designed experiment was used to study the effects of die gap, die land length, and blowup ratio (BUR) on key linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) blown film properties at constant final film thickness. In addition, differences in molecular orientation in the films were studied using optical birefringence and shrinkage methods. Measured key film properties were correlated to processing conditions and to measured molecular orientation. Die land length had no significant effect on film structure and properties. All LLDPE films exhibited about 70 to 80% shrinkage in the machine direction (MD) but expanded in the cross direction (CD). Most films exhibited negative in-plane birefringence. MD Elmendorf tear was found to be inversely related to drawdown ratio and MD shrinkage, suggesting that MD tear is dependent primarily on amorphous chain extension and hence, amorphous segments orientation for LLDPE blown films. Dart impact strength of the films was shown to be related to MD shrinkage and to the induced surface roughness due to varying die gap. In a separate study, blown films of three high pressure LDPEs were fabricated under nearly identical conditions. No correlation was found between birefringence and shrinkage data on the LDPE blown films.

    Notes: Residual stress measurements and distortion analyses have been conducted on injection molded plaques made from polypropylene (PP) and a short glass-fiber filled polypropylene (GFPP). The residual stress analyses include measurements both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of flow during mold filling. Residual stresses are very anisotropic in GFPP, but not in PP. The residual stress levels in PP fall on aging at room temperature, whereas in GFPP the proportion of stress relaxation is smaller, and significant stresses remain even after heating to elevated temperatures. A significant contribution to distortion has been linked to the ejection process, and the long- and short-term distortion of moldings is discussed within the framework of the properties of the materials measured here.
