Beschreibung: During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 126, we recovered three expanded Pleistocene sections from the active backarc rift (Sumisu Rift) and three expanded Oligocene-Miocene sections from the forearc basin of the Izu-Bonin volcanic island arc. Quantitative analysis of the Pleistocene nannofossils revealed five major assemblages between 0 and LO Ma: Assemblage 1 (Holocene-0.085 Ma) contains dominant Emiliania huxleyi; Assemblage 2 (ca. 0.085-0.275 Ma) contains dominant small Gephyrocapsa and common E. huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica; Assemblage 3 (ca. 0.275-0.6 Ma) contains dominant Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica; Assemblage 4 (ca. 0.6-0.9 Ma) contains a peak abundance of small Gephyrocapsa in the middle part, and dominant occurrences of two types of G. caribbeanica in the lower and upper parts; and Assemblage 5 (ca. 0.9-1.0 Ma) contains dominant small Gephyrocapsa and common G. caribbeanica and Reticulofenestra asanoi. These assemblages are largely synchronous with similar assemblages recognized from tropical and subtropical regions, and can be used for finer subdivision of the Pleistocene than that based on standard Pleistocene nannofossil datums. The Oligocene-Miocene sections contain several hiatuses: up to 3 m.y. may be missing from the uppermost Oligocene (Zone CP19) at Sites 792 and 793; all of Zone CN2 is missing at Sites 792 and 793; part of Zone CN3 and all of Zone CN4 are missing at Site 792. Biochronology of several nannofossil datums at Leg 126 sites indicate that Sphenolithus distentus, Sphenolithus ciperoensis, Cyclicargolithus floridanus, and Discoaster kugleri have diachronous occurrences compared with other sites in the western Pacific Ocean and Philippine Sea.

In:  Supplement to: Eldrett, James S; Harding, Ian C; Firth, John V; Roberts, Andrew P (2004): Magnetostratigraphic calibration of Eocene-Oligocene dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy from the Norwegian-Greenland Sea. Marine Geology, 204(1-2), 91-127, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0025-3227(03)00357-8

Beschreibung: The presence of abundant age-diagnostic dinoflagellate cysts in Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 913B (Leg 151), Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 338 (Leg 38) and ODP Hole 643A (Leg 104) has enabled the development of a new biostratigraphy for the Eocene-Oligocene interval in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea. This development is important because the calcareous microfossils usually used for biostratigraphy in this age interval are generally absent in high latitude sediments as a result of dissolution. In parallel with this biostratigraphic analysis, we developed a magnetic reversal stratigraphy for these Norwegian-Greenland Sea sequences. This has allowed independent age determination and has enabled the dinocyst biostratigraphy to be firmly tied into the global geomagnetic polarity timescale (GPTS). The relatively high resolution of this study has enabled identification of dinoflagellate cyst assemblages that have affinities with those from the North Sea and the North Atlantic, which allows regional correlation. Correlation of each site with the GPTS has also allowed comparison of the stratigraphic record preserved in each drill-hole. Hole 913B is the most complete and is the best-preserved record of the Eocene and Oligocene in the Northern Hemisphere high latitudes, and can serve as a reference section for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions of this age interval.

Beschreibung: Sixty-nine ichthyolith taxa have been identified in otherwise unfossiliferous red clays from Cores 136-842B-3H, -4H, and -5H at Ocean Drilling Program Site 842 on the Hawaiian Arch. Based on correlation with previous studies of ichthyoliths, these assemblages indicate that sediments from 21.53 to 31.10 mbsf are of early Miocene age. Ichthyolith-bearing sediments below this interval, from 31.10 to 35.57 mbsf, are Oligocene to early Miocene in age, whereas overlying clays from 21.53 to 19.05 mbsf are early to middle Miocene in age. Reworked ichthyoliths of Cretaceous to Eocene age are present in the cores, suggesting an exposed source of sediments of these ages during the early Miocene.

In:  Supplement to: Firth, John V (1993): Palynofacies and thermal maturation analysis of sediments from the Nankai Trough. In: Hill, IA; Taira, A; Firth, JV; et al. (eds.), Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, Scientific Results, College Station, TX (Ocean Drilling Program), 131, 57-69, https://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.131.101.1993
    Publikationsdatum: 2024-01-09
Beschreibung: Analysis of the palynofacies and miospore thermal alteration indices (TAI) of sediments from ODP Site 808 in the Nankai Trough was undertaken to determine (1) the source, depositional environment, and diagenesis of organic matter in the accreted sediments, and (2) the thermal structure and history of the prism and its relationship to fluid flow. Using the Hartax classification system, two palynofacies were recognized in the sedimentary sequence. Facies 1 occurs within the upper 600 m of trench-wedge turbidites (sedimentation rate 〉 1 km/m.y.) and contains 〉50% inertite particles. The rest of the assemblage is dominated by well-preserved phytoclasts and contains small amounts of poorly preserved phytoclasts and well-preserved scleratoclasts. Facies 2 occurs within the Shikoku Basin hemipelagites (600-1300 m below seafloor; sedimentation rate 〈150 m/m.y.) and contains over two-thirds inertite particles. The rest of the assemblage is dominated by poorly preserved phytoclasts. Miospores and marine phytoplankton compose only a small percentage of both palynofacies. Degraded organic matter is most noticeable in Facies 2, whereas its presence in Facies 1 is overshadowed by the high influx of well-preserved primary organic matter. Most of the degraded organic matter and inertite is interpreted to be reworked. Some of the degraded organic matter may be primary, and may have experienced more biodegradation and thermal alteration in Facies 2 than in Facies 1. TAI values indicate an immature stage of organic maturation (〈 2) down to about 900 mbsf. Below this, samples show an increase with depth to a mature stage, reaching peak levels of about 3 just above basement. Samples from within the thrust fault and decollement zones do not show levels of maturity significantly greater than those of surrounding samples, leaving uncertain whether hot fluids have migrated along these fault boundaries in the past.
