Notizen: We present new time-of-flight electronics for atom-probe field-ion microscopy that is based on the LeCroy 2277/EXP2 time-to-digital converter (TDC) and is significantly superior to the commonly used LeCroy 4208 TDC. The maximum number of ions detected for each cycle is increased, the electronics dead time is decreased, and the pulse width from the Phillips Scientific 6904 discriminator is measured. The LeCroy 2277/EXP2 TDC records up to 128 ions per field evaporation pulse as opposed to a maximum of eight ions for a single LeCroy 4208 TDC. The dead time is reduced by increasing the pulse pair resolution, in the multihit mode of the TDC, from 7.3 to 3.3 ns. The LeCroy 2277/EXP2 TDC has both leading and trailing edge detection capability, allowing us to measure the pulse width generated by the Phillips Scientific 6904 discriminator. Combining the pulse width measurement capability with the updating capability of the Phillips Scientific 6904 discriminator, in which the discriminator extends the output pulse width by the time difference between two closely spaced (〈2 ns) pulses, we resolve two ions arriving within 2 ns of each other. With these improvements, we find that 66% of the total number of multiply field-evaporated ions arriving with a pulse separation of up to 8 ns are incorrectly counted as a single ion. The percentage of multiply field-evaporated ions occurring with a pulse separation of 2 ns is 6%.

Notizen: We have developed a new ultrasonic method for measuring the phase velocity of longitudinal and shear waves in self-supporting thin films. The film is bonded at one end to an interdigital transducer (IDT) which emits a continuous wave signal. The film is supported at the other end and maintained flat under a weak tension. A receiving IDT detects the in-phase and quadrature components of the sound waves as they propagate. A liquid bond is used between the receiving IDT and the film to allow a continuous variation of the path length. From the longitudinal and shear wave velocities, we can deduce the flexural and shear moduli of the film. For films of uniaxial or higher symmetry, the Young's and biaxial moduli can be expressed as combinations of the flexural and shear moduli. We applied this technique to Cu-Pd composition modulated thin films. Contrary to previous reports, we have not observed the supermodulus effect in either the flexural, shear, Young's or biaxial moduli for modulation wavelengths between 13 and 36 A(ring).

Notizen: A simple, rugged, and inexpensive solid dielectric Compton diode (SCD) has been developed for measuring the radiation-time history of flash x-ray sources. By limiting the physical size of the Compton diode and matching its characteristic impedance to that of the signal cable, a frequency response above 1 GHz has been achieved. The SCD has been used to measure the pulse width and rise time of HERMES III, a pulsed γ-ray simulator. A second, prototype SCD has been built for use with Saturn, a pulsed x-ray simulator. The SCDs do not have high sensitivity, and are thus limited to measurements of dose rate above 109 rads/s, due to signal-to-noise limitations. At lower dose rates, more sensitive detectors such as scintillator photodiodes or p-i-n diodes are more suitable. On the other hand, for dose rates above 1010 rads/s, the more sensitive detectors tend to saturate, while the SCD continues to respond linearly to at least 1012 rads/s. Thus, the SCD is well suited for measuring radiation-time histories at high dose rates on flash x-ray sources.

Notizen: Extensive examination of large numbers of spatially orientated thin sections of orientated samples from orogens of all ages around the world has demonstrated that porphyroblasts do not rotate relative to geographical coordinates during highly non-coaxial ductile deformation of the matrix subsequent to their growth. This has been demonstrated for all tectonic environments so far investigated. The work also has provided new insights and data on metamorphic, structural and tectonic processes including: (1) the intimate control of deformation partitioning on metamorphic reactions; (2) solutions to the lack of correlation between lineations that indicate the direction of movement within thrusts and shear zones, and relative plate motion; and (3) a possible technique for determining the direction of relative plate motion that caused orogenesis in ancient orogens.

Notizen: Abstract Two nonpenetrating membrane probes, p-azidobenzylphlorizin (p-AzBPhz) and 4,4′-diisothiocyano-2,2′-stilbene disulfonate (DIDS), have been shown in earlier studies to induce dose-dependent changes in red blood cell (RBC) shape and volume at the same low concentrations that inhibit anion transport. In the present work, these ligand-induced morphology and rheology changes were studied using video digital image morphometry (VDIM) and microfiltration techniques. The results of these experiments corroborate our earlier investigation. RBCs were filmed using a Nomarski optics microscope with video camera attachment and cell size and shape changes were computer analyzed using VDIM. Low μm p-AzBPhz or DIDS levels caused collapse of the cell's biconcave structure and cell flattening occurred within 1–2 sec after drug exposure. Higher doses of either agent converted cells to a new steady-state in which a concurrent limited increase in erythrocyte volume and blunt membrane protrusions were produced. These changes were reversed in less than 2 sec by washing the drug from the membrane. Both ligands increased the deformability of RBCs in a dose-dependent manner as determined by filtration through Nuclepore polycarbonate filters (3 μm pore diameter). The improvement in deformability of drug-treated sickle cells was much more dramatic than for normal cells at low p-AzBPhz concentrations. These results support our earlier conclusions that the ligands, through a common interaction with band 3, induce volume-associated cytoskeletal alterations which lead to changes in morphology and flexibility.
