Notes: Summary Netilmicin 1.5 mg/kg body weight was administered intravenously every 8 h for 2 days to 8 patients with normal renal function. Significant elevation of mean and trough plasma concentrations was found at 05.00 h and 09.00 h. This was considered to be due to circadian variation, with possible accumulation during the night. The clinical importance of this phenomenon in relation to the development of aminoglycoside toxicity awaits further investigation.

Notes: Abstract The dust haze conditions, typical of the African atmosphere south of the Sahara, are a result of wind-generated dust from arid lands. The magnitude of the dust haze is evaluated for the 30-year period beginning in 1957 by calculating the number of occurrences where the observed visibility was reduced below threshold values of 10 km and 5 km. The frequency of low visibility was several times greater for the 1977–1986 period than for the 1957–1966 period. Large decreases in visibility are observed after the severe droughts of 1972–1973 and 1982-1984. Contrasting regional differences of the dustiness evolution are noticed. These differences are closely related to the differences in the regional rainfall evolution. The increase in dustiness is believed to arise from dust produced in new desertic areas which result from rainfall shortages along the southern border of the Sahara.

Notes: Affine Wigner functions are phase space representations based on the affine group in place of the usual Weyl–Heisenberg group of quantum mechanics. Such representations are relevant to the time–frequency analysis of real signals. An interesting family is singled out by the requirement of covariance with respect to each solvable three-parameter group containing the affine group. Explicit forms are given in each case and properties such as unitarity and localization are discussed. Some particular distributions are recovered.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Morphoscopic studies of zircons, including optical microscopic and SEM (backscattered electron mode), from the Rôniers valley (West-Poli, Northern Cameroon) indicate an important crystallization of zircon during a medium-grade garnet-kyanite metamorphic event. This was associated with a deformation (D1) and with the emplacement of a basic and intermediate plutonic suite (BIP). U-Pb dating of these zircon gave almost concordant Pan-African ages (630 Ma) which contribute to a solution of a major regional uncertainty about the age of the regional D1 event, which, in the mobile belt of Central Africa, has been considered previously either as Pan-African or as Lower to Middle Proterozoic. A chronological framework is proposed for the evolution of northern Cameroon.

Notes: Abstract The denitrifying activity was measured in different types of sediment from the Mediterranean coast of France before, and after, a massive contamination (30–100 g kg-1 sediment) of hydrocarbons. A closed system was used in order to maintain anoxic conditions and to control substrates and gaseous products concentrations. We have demonstrated that the respiratory metabolism was inhibited in all cases following an incubation time of 20 to 50 days. At this time, the addition of lactate restore the denitrifying activity. The inhibitory effect of crude oil was not related to an alteration of bacterial cells, but to changes in environmental conditions allowing denitrification. The presence of hydrocarbons in the sediments causes a decrease in the redox potential and a concomitant stimulation of the sulfate reduction.

Notes: Two cationic, copper metal complexes with different ligands were synthesized: ethylenediamine (en) [Cu(C2N8N2) (ClO4)2] and diethanolamine (Deta) {[Cu-C8H21N2O4]ClO4}. These complexes were mounted on Cab-O-Sil using nonaqueous impregnation techniques, and the loadings were determined at which multilayers formed. These samples were analyzed for copper, carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen content to determine if ligand dissociation occurred during the impregnation. Samples were decomposed in a thermal gravimetric apparatus to determine the kinetics of the thermolysis reaction in air, and the evolved gases were analyzed by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry to determine the products of the thermolysis reaction. The results of these and earlier studies are summarized in a model that describes the effects of molecular structure upon complex-support interactions. Complexes with the ability to form hydrogen bond interactions between the ligand and the support form strong interactions with the surface of silica, whereas complexes without such hydrogen bond interactions are only weakly attracted to the silica surface. Strong interactions with the surface may also arise as a result of ligand dissociation and direct interaction of the metal ion with the surface oxygens. The charge on the complex and its shape play less important roles in determining the affinity of the metal complex with the silica.

Notes: Summary The biodegradation of Ashtart crude oil by a mixed bacterial community (EH1) isolated from a marine sediment was investigated in varying concentration of sodium chloride (0 to 2 mol/l). Each fraction of Ashtart crude oil was biodegraded after a 30 day incubation period for a NaCl concentration equivalent to the one of seawater (0.4 mol/l). Saturates were more readily degraded than aromatics. The amount of oil degraded increased initially with increasing salt concentrations to a maximum level for 0.4 mol/l NaCl concentration. Thereafter the amount of oil degraded decreased with increasing salt concentrations. The polar fraction increased for the 0.4 to 1.4 mol/l NaCl concentration range. Asphaltenes were only slightly degraded (10%) for a NaCl concentration equivalent to the one of seawater (0.4 mol/l). NaCl concentrations seemed to affect the relative biodegradation of pristane and phytane. GC, UV fluorescence and FTIR techniques were used to study the evolution of each fraction of Ashtart crude oil.

Notes: The 15N NMR spectra of five N-(o-aminophenyl)-N′ substituted ureas and their hydrochloride salts were recorded in DMSO. N-1 was more shielded in these ureas than in N-phenyl-N′-methylurea. The shifts of N-3 varied with the substituents. Proton exchanges at N-3 were observed when the spectra of the hydrochloride salts were recorded. The preferential trans-trans orientation of the protons with respect to the carbonyl in the ureido group was confirmed by NOE difference spectroscopy. In the solid, the conformation of N(o-aminophenyl)-N′-methylurea, which was determined by x-ray diffraction, was found to be similar to the suggested conformation in solution; the 15N shifts of this compound in the solid state were determined by 15N cross-polarization magic angle spinning NMR.
