Description: using tiltmeters and GPS observations. The study region is located in northeastern Italy, in the seismic area of the Cansiglio Plateau. The Zöllner type Marussi tiltmeters are installed in a natural cavity (Bus de la Genziana) that is part of an interesting karstic area of particular hydrogeologic importance. The Livenza river forms from a number of springs at the foothills of the karstic massif and flows through the Friuli-Veneto plain into the Adriatic Sea. Comparing the tiltmeter signal recorded at the Genziana station with the local pluviometrical series and the hydrometric series of the Livenza river, a clear correlation is recognized. Moreover, the data of a permanent GPS station located on the southern slopes of the Cansiglio Massif (CANV) show also a clear correspondence with the water runoff. Here we present the hydrologic induced deformations as observed by tiltmeter and GPS. After heavy rain events we record rapid deformations both by tiltmeters and GPS corresponding to the rainfall duration. In the following days a slow geodetic motion recovers the accumulated deformation with a distinctive pattern both in tilt and GPS data, which correlates with the runoff of the karstic aquifer. The purpose of this research is to open a new multidisciplinary frontier between geodetic and karstic systems studies to improve the knowledge of the underground fluid flow circulation in karstic areas. Furthermore a better characterization of the hydrologic effects on GPS and tilt observations will have the benefit that these signals can be corrected when the focus of the study is to recover the tectonic deformation.

Notes: Abstract A stacking Mössbauer technique, MMS has been applied for studying thin surface layers. The surface layers formed on the57Fe film in aqueous solutions of corrosion inhibitors, such as zinc phosphate and barium metaborate, and in distilled water was studied by this method. It has been found that the corrosion is much slower in the presence of zinc phosphate and barium metaborate. XPS analysis suggests the formation of a mixed iron zinc phosphate on the surface of the57Fe film after corrosion in a zinc phosphate solution.

Notes: Abstract A special Mössbauer technique, MMS has been used for the study of corrosion on the surface of57Fe layers, under two types of organic coatings. The corrosion processes were followed by the Mössbauer spectra.

Notes: Abstract The evolution of two adjacent bipolar sunspot groups is studied using Debrecen full-disc, white-light photoheliograms and Hα filtergrams as well as Meudon magnetograms. The proper motions of the principal preceding spots of both groups show quite similar patterns; the spots move along almost parallel tracks and change the direction of their motion on the same day at almost the same heliographic longitude. Also, three simultaneous emergences of magnetic flux were observed in both groups. These observations support the idea that these adjacent sunspot groups were magnetically linked below the photosphere. Matching the extrapolated magnetic field lines with the chromospheric fibril structure appears to be different in the two groups since they indicate quite different model solutions for each group, i.e., a near-potential magnetic field configuration in the older group (1) and a twisted force-free field configuration in the younger group (2). The latter configuration could be created by a considerable twist of the main bunch of flux tubes in Group 2, which is reflected in the relative sunspot motions. It is also showed how this twist contributed to the formation of a filament between the two groups.

Notes: Abstract The structural properties of the solid phase, formed by the hydrolysis of Fe3+ ions in Fe2(SO4)3 solutions at 90 or 120 °C, were investigated using X-ray diffraction,57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT—IR) and transmission electron microscopy. The concentration regions of Fe2(SO4)3 were determined for the precipitation of goethite, α-FeOOH, or hydronium jarosite, H3OFe3(OH)6(SO4)2′ as a single phase. Superparamagnetic behaviour of α-FeOOH particles was observed. Hydrolysis of Fe3+ ions in 0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3 solutions at 120 °C produced H3OFe3(OH)6(SO4)2 and basic sulphate, Fe4(OH)10SO4. The interpretation of57Fe Mössbauer and FT—IR spectra is given.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract In the experimental praxis of our chemical laboratory we have been surprised and impressed by a few uncontrollable results caused by plastics. These materials are generally considered to be chemically more or less unreactive and inert. Absorption and chemical degradation—especially during long use—can activate the surface of silicon rubber, polyethylene or teflon, which are constituents of tubes, reaction vessels, stirring bars and other parts of instruments. In a few cases catalytic activation can be interpreted in terms of the interaction between the microporous surfaces of plastics and reactants. These observations require careful consideration and control of the properties and quality of plastics before using them even in the simplest chemical experiments.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry have been used to study Sm−Fe mixed oxides (with different Sm∶Fe atomic ratios) annealed at 550, 850, 1000 and 1250 °C. The room temperature Mössbauer spectra can be interpreted in terms of one, two or three sextets and in some cases by an additional doublet depending on the composition and the heat treatment. The sextets have been associated with SmFeO3 perovskite, Sm3Fe5O12 garnet and α-Fe2O3 hematite. These results are in agreement with those of X-ray diffractometric measurements, which give a clear, evidence of the presence of these phases.

Notes: Abstract Samples with compositions Fe-41.1%Ni-1.5%Cr and Fe-55.5%Ni-1.1%Cr were heat treated at 250°C and at 350°C for 2 hours. The Mössbauer spectra of all samples show a magnetically split pattern and a paramagnetic component and in the spectral linewidth as well as in the relative amount of paramagnetic component and in the spectral linewidth as well as in the average hyperfine field with increasing ageing temperature. The results can be associated with a phase transformation and with precipitation of alloying elements due to the ageing.
