    Description: The topographic survey of the studied outcrops is based on several thousands of measurements per study site and the measurement of the sample elevation with reference to sea level using a real-time kinematic GPS Trimble R8. The maximum vertical (Z) and horizontal (X and Y) elevation errors are of ± 2.0 cm and a few millimetres, respectively. During the measurement, the surveys were related to the French Polynesian Geodetic Network (Réseau Géodésique de Polynésie Française; RGPF), to operating tide gauges or tide gauge data sets, to probes that were deployed during the field work, to the instantaneous sea level or to modern adjacent microatolls growing in a similar environment than their fossil counterparts. In the absence of geodetic datum or tide gauges, probes were deployed for four to five days in order to measure the sea-level position and to compare the data to the elevation of modern microatolls. The relative sea-level curve, which is presented in this paper, is based on data acquired on islands for which longer tidal records and geodetic data are available. After acquisition, the raw data were processed with the aims: 1) to estimate the elevation of individual dated fossil microatolls based on local tide gauge parameters, and 2) to compare the elevation of all dated fossil microatolls according to the same vertical reference. The link between tide gauge data and the position of the living and fossil microatolls can be established using RGPF. However, a topographic reference at the scale of French Polynesia (4,167 km^2), which is mandatory to achieve the second objective, does not exist, as tide gauge observations are incomplete and the NGPF (Nivellement Général de Polynésie Française) vertical datum that is associated to the RGPF is not homogeneous at this regional scale. The official geodetic system in French Polynesia is the RGPF, which is associated with the NGPF vertical datum. The French Polynesian Geodetic Network is a semi-dynamic system with different levels established by the Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine; SHOM) in cooperation with the National Geographic Institute (Institut Géographique National; IGN). The selection of microatolls for dating has been based on the lack of erosion features, the absence of local moating effects and their mineralogical preservation, demonstrating that our database is robust. The chemical preparation, mass-spectrometer measurements and age dating were performed in the years 2014 to 2016 mostly directly after field collection. The data are presented in Supplementary Table 2 following recommendations from Dutton et al. (2017). The best-preserved samples, as indicated by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) measurements, comprise 97.5% aragonite on average (n = 281). Additionally, no secondary aragonite or calcite crystals were revealed by thin section and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observations.

    Notes: Summary An interspecies comparison was made between the 3′ ends of Balbiani ring genes fromChironomus. The comparison was focused on the BR2.2 gene, and a part at the 3′ end fromChironomus pallidivittatus (which included also a segment of the gene core) was cloned. Its sequence, and other previously published BR sequences from this species and fromChironomus tentans were used in the analysis. The 3′ parts of these repetitive genes can be divided into a region belonging to the core of the genes followed by a terminal region. In the core region the repeats (each of which consists of a constant part and a subrepeated part) are highly similar and the constant parts show little interspecies differentiation. Furthermore, the two parts of the repeats are units in an evolutionary and probably also functional sense. The terminal region contains modified constant units, usually isolated betwen acidic so-called cys regions, the whole arrangement lying upstream of an intron toward a 3′-terminal exon. Most of the modified constant units are mosaics in rates of evolution with stable outer quarters bordering to equally stable cys regions and a central half with a very high rate of evolution. One of the terminal units, present only in the BR2.2 gene and second from the end, differs distinctly not only from corresponding core units but also from other terminal units in the three normally active BR genes. It lies upstream of all cys regions and is evolutionarily conserved over most of its length. Furthermore, two-dimensional protein structure prediction does not exclude an endoproteolytic cleavage site in this unit. Such a site appears unlikely in other terminal or core regions. This is of interest in view of evidence for intracellular cleavage of the BR2.2 terminal region with liberation of a part containing a DNA-binding domain (Botella et al. 1988). All in all the fine anatomy of evolutionary changes at the BR gene termini shows interesting correlations with postulated functional relations and may have predictive value in the further functional analysis of this part of the gene.

    Notes: Ab initio relativistic effective potentials (REP) for first row transition metals show large errors in excitation energies between s2dn, s1dn+1, and dn+2 states if only 4s and 3d electrons are included in the valence space (Ar core). These errors are diminished when the potentials are generated including also 3s and 3p electrons in the valence space (Ne core), but thus one of the main advantages of the REP procedure is lost. The origin of such errors in Ar core potentials is first analyzed in this work and a modification to their construction is proposed which, while retaining the Ar core choice, clearly improves the general performance of the potentials.

    Notes: The far infrared torsional spectra of acetone (CH3)2CO and (CD3)2CO have been determined from ab initio calculations, and the main features of the experimental data assigned. For this purpose, the potential energy surface for the double methyl rotation was determined with fully relaxed geometry into the RHF and RHF+MP2 approximations using a 6–31G(p,d) basis set. The energy values, as well as the kinetic parameters obtained from the optimized geometry, were fitted to double Fourier expansions as functions of the rotational angles in seven terms. The torsional solutions were developed on the basis of the symmetry eigenvectors of the G36 nonrigid group, which factorize the Hamiltonian matrix into 16 boxes. The energy levels and torsional wave functions for each symmetry specie were then obtained diagonalizing each blocks separately. Intensities were obtained from the calculated electric dipole moment variations and the nuclear statistical weights, and were combined with the torsional frequencies to predict the spectra. The calculated band patterns show a multi- plet structure and reproduce the main features of the experimental data. The torsional bands of the infrared active ν17 mode were found to be clustered into quartets, (A1→A2, G→G, E1→E1, E3→E4), for the v=0→v=1 fundamental, and (A2→A1, G→G, E1→E1, E4→E3) for the v=1→v=2 first sequence transitions. The G→G transitions were found to be the more intense. The correlation between the calculated and observed spectra allows for an assignment of the major bands.

    Notes: A cDNA clone encoding an isoform of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase was isolated from Nicotiana tabacum. The steady-state plasma membrane H+-ATPase message levels were the same in unadapted tobacco cells and tobacco cells adapted to 428 mol m−3 NaCl. When cells adapted to 428 mol m−3 NaCl maintained in the absence of NaCl (deadapted) for an excess of 100 passages were exposed to 400 mol m−3 NaCl for 24 h, there was an increased accumulation of plasma membrane H+-ATPase message. The NaCl responsiveness of the deadapted cells was dependent upon the growth cycle stage. Alterations in the levels of plasma membrane FT-ATPase message during the growth cycle support a role for the H+-ATPase in cell growth. These results document the induction by NaCl of plasma membrane FT-ATPase message accumulation in tobacco cells, and suggest that enhanced expression of the plasma membrane FT-ATPase has a role in the short term response of cells of NaCl, but is not necessarily involved in long-term adaptation.

    Notes: Abstract Adult and fourth-stage larvae of Paracuaria hispanica n. sp., from the stomach of the Pyrenean desman Galemys pyrenaicus Geoffroy (Insectivora: Talpidae) in northern and central Spain, are described. The new species differs from the other members of the genus Paracuaria (P. adunca and P. soricis), among other morphological details, in its smaller body and spicule sizes, the presence of a cuticular ring around the tip of the female tail, and the existence of lateral alae running longitudinally along its body from the cervical region to the tail. In view of the latter feature, the genus Paracuaria is redefined. The fourth stage larva of the new species is distinguished from that of P. adunca by its monocuspid deirids. P. hispanica occurred in 45% of the 20 host specimens examined.

    Notes: Abstract NaCl treatment of tomato plants in hydroponic culture at concentrations as low as 50 mM resulted in enhanced accumulation of transcripts of TPX1, a full-length cDNA clone that we had isolated from a library of NaCl-treated tomato plants using a peroxidase-specific oligonucleotide probe. Although the overall amino acid sequence identity of TPX1 to other peroxidase genes was less than 45%, there was a very high degree of identity in all of the conserved domains. The deduced amino acid sequence included the presence of a N-terminal signal peptide but not the C-terminal extension present in peroxidases targeted to the vacuole. The mature protein has a theoretical pI value of 7.5. Transcripts that hybridized to TPX1 were detected only in the roots with higher levels of mRNA in epidermal and subepidermal cell layers. Isoelectric focusing of root extracts showed two major bands of peroxidase activity at pI 5.9 and 6.2. Both activities increased with salt treatment. Southern analysis indicated the presence of only a single TPX1 gene in tomato.
