Notes: Abstract The standard molar enthalpy of formation of crystalline di-isobutyldithiocarbamate complexes of P, As, Sb and Bi(III) has been derived by solution calorimetry at 298.15 K. The corresponding standard molar enthalpies of sublimation were estimated by means of differential scanning calorimetry. From the standard molar enthalpies of formation of the gaseous chelates the homolytic and heterolytic mean metal-sulphur bond-dissociation enthalpies were calculated.

Notes: Abstract  To evaluate the genetic diversity of 18 maize inbred lines, and to determine the correlation between genetic distance and single-cross hybrid performance, we have used random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), a PCR-based technique. Eight of these lines came from a Thai synthetic population (BR-105), and the others derived from a Brazilian composite population (BR-106). Thirty two different primers were used giving a total of 325 reproducible amplification products, 262 of them being polymorphic. Genetic divergence was determinated using Jaccard’s similarity coefficient, and a final dendrogram was constructed using an unweighted pair-group method with arithmetical averages (UPGMA). Cluster analysis divided the samples into three distinct groups (GI, GII and GIII) that were confirmed by principal-coordinate analysis. The genetic distances (GD) were correlated with important agronomic traits for single-cross hybrids and heterosis. No correlation was found when group division was not considered, but significant correlations were detected between GI×GII and GI×GIII GDs with their respective single-cross hybrid grain-yield values. Three groups were identified; that is, the BR-106 population was divided in two different groups and the BR-105 population remained mostly as one group. The results indicated that RAPD can be used as a tool for determining the extent of genetic diversity among tropical maize inbred lines, for allocating genotypes into different groups, and also to aid in the choice of the superior crosses to be made among maize inbred lines, so reducing the number of crosses required under field evaluation.

Notes: Summary The oligomerization of ethylene catalyzed by nickel-PÔ complexes at room temperature and low pressure (5 to 30 bar) yields butenes, hexenes and octenes. The molecular weight distribution can be manipulated by variation of ethylene pressure and by addition of triphenylphosphine. An unexpected linear dependence between the growing factor β of the Schulz-Flory type distribution and the pressure has been observed. The equation: β=6.2 (PPh3/Ni)1.2-[0,17 P(PPh3/Ni)1.2] allows to predict the composition of the α-olefins formed under different reaction conditions.

Notes: Abstract Many researchers have pursued the establishment of a low-cost, effective testing and validation strategy at the program level as well as at the specification level. Mutation Testing is an error-based approach, originally introduced for program testing, that provides testers a systematic way to evaluate how good a given test set is. Some studies have also investigated its use to generate test sets. In this article, the application of Mutation Testing for validating Estelle specifications is proposed. A mutant operator set for Estelle—one of the crucial points for effectively applying Mutation Testing—is defined, addressing: the validation of the behavior of the modules, the communication among modules and the architecture of the specification. In this scope, these operators can be taken as a fault model. Considering this context, a strategy for validating Estelle-based specification is proposed and exemplified using the Alternating-bit protocol.

Notes: Abstract In this study, the effect of the metallization thickness in finlines on semiconcuctor substrate is researched. The propagation parameters are computed to measure the inluence of the metallization. The theory and numerical results are presented to the propagation constant and characteristic impedance of the bilateral and unilateral finlines. The full wave analysis of the transverse transmission line — TTL method is used to determine the electromagnetic fields of the structure in Fourier transform domain — FTD. Applying the suitable boundary conditions, the moment method and expanding the fields in a set of suitable bases functions, a homogeneous matrix system is obtained and the propagation constant is computed. The characteristic impedance is obtained using the relation of the voltage in the slot and the transmitted power by the structure. Computational programs are developed to obtain numerical results to the propagation parameters composed by the propagation constant and characteristic impedance.

Notes: Abstract Impure zirconia stabilized by 12 wt% yttria concentrate (85 wt% Y2O3 + 15 wt% rare-earth (RE)) was found to have high grain and grain-boundary electrical conductivities. The influence of the RE on the segregation of impurities was studied for four different compositions. Microstructure features are evidence for the enhanced segregation of impurities due to RE ions. The increased grain and grain-boundary conductivities are a consequence of the segregation of impurities.

Notes: Abstract Grain boundary electrical properties of Y2O3 stabilised zirconia with small additions of Er2O3 and Pr2O3 sintered via silicate liquid phase were studied by the impedance spectroscopy technique. Grain boundary specific conductivity of the praseodymium doped samples was found to be independent of sintering time, while the erbium doped sample showed high anomalous conductivity for the 1.0 h sintered samples. The electrical behaviour is explained considering the grain boundary to be a series association of the glass film and the space charge region. Specific conductivity and Debye length of the space charge region of erbium doped samples were found to be 6.7 × 10−8 S/cm and 0.25 nm, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on silicate liquid phase sintering of YSZ ceramics with addition of 0.5 mol % of rare earth ions have been done in order to study the effect of these ions on the kinetics of grain growth and the expulsion of glass through the grain boundaries. Kinetics follow a third power law in the following order YPr 〉 YPrEr 〉 YY 〉 YEr. The expelled glass does not spread over the ceramic grains and its mass is inversely related to grain size. Glass phase separation inside the grain boundaries is found to be a necessary condition for glass expulsion.

Notes: Abstract Confocal laser scanning microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the inner membrane complex of tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii. DiOC6, a lipophilic cationic fluorescent dye used to visualize the endoplasmic reticulum of eukaryotic cells, labeled cytoplasmic structures in a reticulated pattern and the periphery of the nucleus of the host cell. Intracellular and extracellular tachyzoites were stained. Observation of several focal planes showed labeling of the most peripheral region of the protozoan. Reaction product was observed in the outer nuclear membrane, in profiles of the endoplasmic reticulum, and in the inner membrane complex of tachyzoites subjected to the KI-OsO4 technique. Taken together, these observations suggest that the inner membrane complex may represent a specialized region of the endoplasmic reticulum of tachyzoites of T. gondii.
