    Notes: Abstract Objective: This was a randomised, open, three-way crossover study in 12 healthy male volunteers to determine the effect of a single oral dose of cimetidine on the pharmacokinetics of a single oral dose of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist valsartan – and vice versa. The volunteers received either valsartan alone (160 mg), or cimetidine alone (800 mg), or valsartan 1 h after cimetidine. The study was designed primarily to detect a possible influence of cimetidine on the rate and extent of absorption of valsartan. Methods: Plasma concentrations of valsartan and cimetidine, measured by means of high-performance liquid chromatography, were used to calculate pharmacokinetic parameters. The rate of absorption of valsartan and the fraction of the dose absorbed and systemically available after oral administration were calculated using data from an i.v. study with valsartan in healthy young volunteers. Results: The pharmacokinetics of cimetidine – area under curve (AUC0–48 h), maximum concentration (Cmax), time to reach Cmax (tmax) and apparent terminal plasma half-life (t1/2) – was not changed by co-administration of valsartan. For valsartan, the AUC0–48 h increased by 7% and the Cmax by 51% (ratio of geometric means) with co-administration of cimetidine. The higher value for Cmax was attributed to the initial increase in the rate of absorption of valsartan: ka was increased 2.7-fold and another indicator for the rate of absorption, Cmax/tmax, 2.2-fold. This effect was ascribed to inhibition of acid secretion by cimetidine, which leads to a higher gastric pH, thereby increasing the solubility of valsartan; the t1/2 of valsartan was not changed. After valsartan alone, 19% of the dose was absorbed, 23% with co-administration of cimetidine. It was estimated that only 2.2% of the possible change in AUC might be missed by giving a single high dose of cimetidine instead of multiple doses, with the aim to optimally inhibit formation of the inactive metabolite of valsartan. Cimetidine-related changes in the rate of elimination of valsartan were not anticipated, since the clearance from plasma occurs mainly by biliary excretion of unchanged valsartan; metabolism and renal excretion are only minor contributors. Therefore, even in the clinically relevant situation with multiple doses of valsartan and cimetidine, notable changes in the pharmacokinetics of valsartan, except for an increase in Cmax, are not to be expected. This increase in Cmax appears to be of no clinical significance. Valsartan alone and in combination with cimetidine was well tolerated by healthy subjects.

    Notes: In silicon wafer bonding, the initial contact area spreads laterally with a typical speed on the order of 10 mm/s. We observed that this lateral bonding speed increases with decreasing ambient pressure, and is independent of the distance of the contact front to the rim of the wafers and independent of wafer thickness. From these results, we conclude that the lateral bonding speed is mainly determined by pressing the ambient gas out between the two wafers from a very localized area close to the propagating bonding front. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Lakser proved that, for every lattice K and nontrivial congruence $ \phi $ of K, there is an extension L of K such that $ \phi $ is the restriction to K of a standard congruence on L. ¶In this note, we give a very short proof of this result in a stronger form the lattice L we construct is sectionally complemented and it has only one nontrivial congruence, the standard congruence.

    Notes: Abstract Pseudomonas sp. D7-4 and Pseudomonas sp. B13 FR1(pFRC20P) degraded mixtures of chloro- and methyl-substituted benzoates exclusively via an extended ortho pathway, whereas in Pseudomonas putida WR201 both ortho and meta fission were induced by mixtures of 3-chloro- and 3-methylbenzoate or even by 3-chlorobenzoate alone. The competition behaviour of these strains was compared in batch and in chemostat cultures. Despite misrouting of metabolites, strain WR201 was competitive, in a lot of the competition experiments, with mixtures of these substrates. Only in a narrow range of the mixing ratio of chloro- and methylbenzoate was the presence of both the meta and ortho pathways a disadvantage for competitiveness. Outside these ranges other attributes, such as high growth rates or short lag periods, of a respective strain were even more essential for one strain to outcompete another.

    Notes: Abstract The Behlen observatory 0.76 m telescope CCD photometer is used to obtain 347 observations of the short period (P≃0d.4) eclipsing binary star V719 Her. The observations done withV andR bandpass filters were made on 6 nights in 1993. Previously published light elements and the present five timings of minimum provide a new epoch and a more accurate orbital period of 0.4009828 days. Our analyses show that the period of the system appears to decrease. We recommend future monitoring of the eclipse minima for this system. No published spectral classification for V719 Her exists. From the color,V-R=0.391, we estimate it to be about F5. The 1993 version of the Wilson Devinney model gave the photometric solutions. The adopted solution indicates that V719 Her is a W UMa type contact binary. The mass ratio,q=(m 2/m 1, where star 1 eclipse at the primary minimum)=0.296 suggests that V719 Her is a WUMa system with type-A (transit during primary eclipse) configuration. The secondary minimum shows a total eclipse. V719 Her with period less than 0.5 and spectral class F5, is probably a zero-age contact system. Since our photometric solution shows that the luminosity difference between the components is very large, we suspect that V719 Her is most likely a single line spectroscopic binary. We recommend spectroscopic study of this system.

    Notes: Abstract We present here the photometric light curve analyses of the eclipsing binary star DN Aur. The CCD photometry, performed at the Behlen observatory using the 0.76 m automated telescope gave 646 individual data points inV andR bandpass filters. From this data we have determined a new epoch and an orbital period of 0.6168891 days. The published spectral classification is F3. The Wilson-Devinney model was used to derive the photometric solutions. DN Aur is a W UMa type contact binary system. The mass ratio, (q=m 2/m 1≃0.210, where star 2 is eclipsed at the primary minimum) suggests that the system has A-type configuration. The computed light curve has a third light of about 22 percent and a total eclipse in the secondary minimum. A solution with a cool spot on the secondary component is also found. We recommend spectroscopic study of DN Aur even though the light curve analysis show it to be a single line spectroscopic system. Generally contact systems of spectral type F3 have periods ranging from 0.25 to 0.5 days. The longer period of DN Aur suggests that it is an evolved contact system with case A mass transfer.

    Notes: Abstract We analytically study the background stability of dark strongly localized vectorial modes in discrete cubic media with self- and cross-phase modulation. The instability regions are identified as a function of the linear and non-linear coupling strength as well as the ratio between the background amplitudes of the two components. The respective instability gain is calculated. Approximate analytical solutions for vectorial discrete solitons of different topologies are derived. The analytical results obtained are confirmed by direct numerical simulations.
