Notes: Abstract In this paper, we estimate the value of energy technology research and development (R&D) as an insurance investment to reduce four risks to the United States. These four risks are (a) the costs of climate stabilization, (b) oil price shocks and cartel pricing, (c) urban air pollution, and (d) other energy disruptions. The total value is estimated conservatively to be 〉$12 billion/year. However, only about half of this total may be warranted because some R&D is applicable to more than one risk. Nevertheless, the total Department of Energy investment in energy technology R&D [~$1.5 billion/year in fiscal year 1999 (FY99)] seems easily justified by its insurance value alone. In fact, a larger investment might be justified, particularly in the areas related to climate change, oil price shock, and urban air pollution. This conclusion appears robust even if the private sector is assumed to be investing a comparable amount relevant to these risks. No additional benefit is credited for the value to the economy and to the competitiveness of the U.S. from better energy technologies that may result from the R&D; only the insurance value for reducing the potential cost of these four risks to society was estimated.

Notes: Scanning capacitance spectroscopy (SCS), a variant of scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM), is presented. By cycling the applied dc bias voltage between the tip and sample on successive scan lines, several points of the high-frequency capacitance–voltage characteristic C(V) of the metal–oxide–semiconductor capacitor formed by the tip and oxidized Si surface are sampled throughout an entire image. By numerically integrating dC/dV, spatially resolved C(V) curves are obtained. Physical interpretation of the C(V) curves is simpler than for a dC/dV image as in a single-voltage SCM image, so that the pn junction may be unambiguously localized inside a narrow and well-defined region. We show SCS data of a transistor in which the pn junction is delineated with a spatial resolution of ±30 nm. This observation is consistent with the conclusion that SCS can delineate the pn junction to a precision comparable to the Si depletion width, in other words, the actual size of the electrical pn junction. A physical model to explain the observed SCS data near the pn junction is presented. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The maximum entropy method is presented in this letter as a highly interesting procedure for the investigation of high frequency noise properties of bulk semiconductors and electron devices at microscopic level. A Monte Carlo simulation of the hot electron velocity fluctuations in bulk GaAs has been performed to illustrate the efficiency and usefulness of this procedure. Comparisons with the most popular techniques presently used in Monte Carlo simulations of noise have also been performed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Comparisons were made of the tissue response to the implantation of two different polytetrafluoroethylene prostheses: Soft Tissue Patch (STP) and Mycro Mesh (MM). A 7 × 5 cm prosthesis of STP (n=12) or MM (n=12) was implanted into a defect of the same size (involving all layers except skin) created in the anterior abdominal wall in 24 New Zealand rabbits. The prostheses were anchored to the recipient tissue, in direct contact with the intestinal loops and connective tissue. After 14, 30, 60 and 90 days, groups of six implants were studied macroscopically and samples were taken to be processed by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), immunohistochemical studies and tensiometry. All animals were valid for the study. In three cases STP implants presented very loose adhesions in the peripheral zones corresponding to the sutures. They were also observed on three MM implants, in the area of the perforations. Light and scanning microscopy revealed the formation of a capsule of scar tissue surrounding both types of prosthesis. At day 90, bridges of connective tissue had formed in the perforated areas of MM. Good vascularization was established in the areas of recipient tissue corresponding to both implants. The macrophage reaction to both biomaterials was maximal at 14 days, after which it progressively decreased until day 90. Tensile testing revealed no significant differences between the two biomaterials. It is concluded that (a) behaviour in the peritoneal interface is similar in the two prostheses, (b) both biomaterials become encapsulated rather than integrated into the recipient tissue, (c) the foreign body reaction does not determine the success or failure of the implants, (d) The perforations of the MM prosthesis do not increase its resistance to stress, or at least not after 90 days of implantation into rabbit abdominal wall.

Notes: Abstract An analytical method for detecting and quantifying cefotaxime in plasma and several tissues is described. The method was developed and validated using plasma and tissues of rats. The samples were analyzed by reversed phase liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection (254 nm). Calibration graphs showed a linear correlation (r 〉 0.999) over the concentration ranges of 0.5–200 μg/mL and 1.25–25 μg/g for plasma and tissues, respectively. The recovery of cefotaxime from plasma standards prepared at the concentrations of 25 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL was 98.5 ± 3.5% and 101.8 ± 2.2%, respectively. The recovery of cefotaxime from tissue standards of liver, fat and muscle, prepared at the concentration of 10 μg/g was: 89.8 ± 1.2% (liver), 103.9 ± 6.5% (fat) and 97.8 ± 2.1% (muscle). The detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) limits for plasma samples were established at 0.11 μg/mL and 0.49 μg/mL, respectively. The values of these limits for tissues samples were approximately 2.5 times higher: 0.3 μg/g (LOD) and 1.25 μg/g (LOQ). For plasma samples, the deviation of the observed concentration from the nominal concentration was less than 5% and the coefficient of variation for within-day and between-day assays was less than 6% and 12%, respectively. The method was used in a pharmacokinetic study of cefotaxime in the rat and the mean values of the pharmacokinetic parameters are given.

Notes: Abstract A new “reef ” of the serpulid polychaete Serpula narconensis Baird, 1885 is reported from the South Georgia Island shelf. This particular mass occurrence is the second serpulid “reef” reported in the Antarctic region. Its location, at 91- to 105-m depth, is very different from those serpulid reefs previously reported, usually sited at intertidal zone or at low depth, and this may be one of the largest, if not the largest, serpulid reef in the world.

Notes: Abstract The Spanish cruise “Bentart 94” was the first of two devoted to the study of the benthic marine fauna off Livingston and Deception Islands, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. In this paper, the taxonomic results of the examination of the “errant” families of the polychaetes collected during that cruise are presented. A total of 834 specimens have been examined, belonging to 34 species of 31 genera and 11 families. A new species, Micronereis anaramosae, is described, and Eusyllis kerguelensis McIntosh is referred to the genus Pionosyllis. The specimens were found in 109 samples of muddy sand, mud, stones, rocks, gravel, and mixed sediments, by scuba diving, Van Veen grab, rock trawl and anchor dredge.
