    Notes: Abstract Eight accounts from ancient Chinese literature have been found that describe phenomena in contexts and in metaphors that are distinctly auroral. These accounts relate to personages purported to have lived in the third millennium B.C. The historicity of the personages and the actual dates of their lives are still a matter of controversy. Thus the accounts should be considered at a minimum as valuable additions to the inventory of ancient allusions to the aurora. At the other extreme, if taken at face value, they document the occurrence of low-latitude aurorae in the third millennium B.C.

    Notes: (2+1) resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization spectra of jet-cooled Kr2 between ≈91 800 and 94 100 cm−1 have been recorded. Single isotopomer excitation spectra were obtained using time-of-flight mass detection. Vibronic structure for several Rydberg ← ground state transitions involving excited gerade states which dissociate to Kr+Kr* (4p55p) have been unambiguously analyzed for the first time, and molecular constants derived. Bond lengths were estimated from Franck–Condon calculations. These results compare favorably with recent ab initio calculations. Excited state predissociation effects were inferred from excitation spectra obtained by monitoring atomic daughter fragment ions in TOF. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : The influence of sediment resuspension on the water quality of shallow lakes is well documented. However, a search of the literature reveals no deterministic mass-balance eutrophication models that explicitly include resuspension. We modified the Lake Okeechobee water quality model - which uses the Water Analysis Simulation Package (WASP) to simulate algal dynamics and phosphorus, nitrogen, and oxygen cycles - to include inorganic suspend. ed solids and algorithms that: (1) define changes in depth with changes in volume; (2) compute sediment resuspension based on bottom shear stress; (3) compute partition coefficients for ammonia and ortho-phosphorus to solids; and (4) relate light attenuation to solids concentrations. The model calibration and validation were successful with the exception of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species which did not correspond well to observed data in the validation phase. This could be attributed to an inaccurate formulation of algal nitrogen preference and/or the absence of nitrogen fixation in the model. The model correctly predicted that the lake is light-limited from resuspended solids, and algae are primarily nitrogen limited. The model simulation suggested that biological fluxes greatly exceed external loads of dissolved nutrients; and sediment-water interactions of organic nitrogen and phosphorus far exceed external loads. A sensitivity analysis demonstrated that parameters affecting resuspension, settling, sediment nutrient and solids concentrations, mineralization, algal productivity, and algal stoichiometry are factors requiring further study to improve our understanding of the Lake Okeechobee ecosystem.

    Notes: We report resonant luminescence studies in ultrathin InAs quantum-well structures. Under double resonant conditions, sharp lines induced by longitudinal optical phonons were observed in the emission spectrum, in addition to the broad band luminescence. These sharp lines exhibited moderate circular polarizations whereas the linear polarization was negligible, indicating a resonant luminescence process. The properties of these sharp lines observed in InAs monolayer quantum wells are quite different from those observed previously in GaAs-AlxGa1−xAs quantum wells under similar conditions. InAs phonons were found to participate in the exciton resonant scattering process at high magnetic fields where double resonant conditions are fulfilled. InAs-like phonon energy is determined to be close to 29.9 meV, in good agreement with the energy expected for a uniform ultrathin elastically strained InAs layer. We performed various circular and linear polarizations to investigate the resonant luminescence process in thin InAs layers inserted in GaAs. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Metallic biomedical implants, such as aneurysm clips, endoprostheses, and internal orthopedic devices give rise to artifacts in the magnetic resonance image (MRI) of patients. Such artifacts impair the information contained in the image in precisely the region of most interest, namely near the metallic device. Ferromagnetic materials are contraindicated because of the hazards associated with their movement during the MRI procedure. In less-magnetic metals, it has been suggested that the extent of the artifact is related to the magnetic susceptibility of the metal, but no systematic data appear to be available. When the susceptibility is sufficiently small, an additional artifact due to electrical conductivity is observed. We present an initial systematic study of MRI artifacts produced by two low susceptibility metals, titanium (relative permeability μr≈1.0002) and copper (μr≈0.99998), including experimental, theoretical, and computer simulation results. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Vibrationally and rotationally resolved spectra of the first-tier E0+(v′) ion-pair state ←X0+(v′′=0) ground-state transition of jet-cooled BrCl near 145 nm were recorded by exciting the halogen with a tunable vacuum ultraviolet "laser" generated by four-wave difference mixing in Kr gas, and detecting the ions produced by (1+1′) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization in a linear time-of-flight mass spectrometer. J-numberings for thirty individual isotopic bands were established by ground-state combination differences, and per band rotational constants were derived. Extensive perturbations precluded the determination of an unambiguous absolute v′-numbering for the observed features or equilibrium rotational constants. However, excited-state vibrational isotope shift measurements do indicate that transitions from v′′=0 of the ground-state probe vibrational levels between v′=173 and 205. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The GaAs sample under study is a n-low temperature-i-p structure grown by molecular beam epitaxy with a low-temperature (LT) layer grown at 300 °C and annealed at 620 °C for 1 h. Admittance measurements on this sample reveal a negative capacitance at low frequency. This work analyzes the origin of the negative capacitance and its corresponding frequency-dependent conductance by combining two current components: charging–discharging current and the inertial conducting current. Analysis results indicate that the activation energies and time constants of both current components closely resemble each other and should correspond to the same trap. Based on the results presented herein, we can conclude that the negative capacitance at low frequency provides evidence of a generation-recombination center with an activation energy of 0.77 eV in the LT layer. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
