    Description: The baculovirus antiapoptotic protein p35 inhibited the proteolytic activity of human interleukin-1 beta converting enzyme (ICE) and three of its homologs in enzymatic assays. Coexpression of p35 prevented the autoproteolytic activation of ICE from its precursor form and blocked ICE-induced apoptosis. Inhibition of enzymatic activity correlated with the cleavage of p35 and the formation of a stable ICE-p35 complex.     Notes: Diffusion coefficients of Na in He, Ne, and Ar are calculated from the molecular Chapman–Enskog theory. For the Na–Ne system, only Patil's potential [J. Chem. Phys. 94, 8089 (1991)] among all proposed potentials predicts a temperature dependence of the coefficients that is in agreement with the available measurements. Besides providing reliable diffusion coefficients, present results validate Patil's theoretical method which has some unique and far-reaching features. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The sol-gel prepared titania (TiO2) has recently been demonstrated with a promising bioactivity [1]. It forms a chemical bond with the living bone in the body, although the bonding is not very strong. The present study is intended to improve the bone-bonding ability of the titania gel. The goal is achieved by impregnating the titania with hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2). The processing route includes the following steps: (1) the titania sol solution was prepared; (2) the solution was mixed with fine hydroxyapatite (HA) powders; (3) the mixture was used to produce a coating on a commercial pure titanium (c.p. Ti) or Ti6A14V plate by a dip coating technique; (4) the coating was fired at 400–600°C. The resulting coating is a composite consisting of hydroxyapatite embedded in the matrix of the titania gel. Such HA-TiO2 composite coating is capable of inducing the hydroxyapatite precipitation from a simulated body fluid. When implanted in femurs of goat, the composite coating shows a bonding with bone. Its bone-bonding strength is twice as high as that of the pure titania gel coating. The results indicate that impregnating with hydroxyapatite is a promising way to increase the bioactivity of the titania gel.

    Notes: Abstract Putative nonautonomous transposable elements from channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were identified. They were named Tipnon elements for Tc1-like transposable elements from channel catfish that are nonautonomous. These elements were defined by their terminal repeats that share identity to members of the known Tc1/mariner transposon superfamily. They show structural similarities to Tc1-like elements, but share little sequence identity beyond the terminal inverted repeats. They do not harbor any amino acid blocks that show similarities to the Tc1-like or other transposases and thus may represent truly nonautonomous transposons in channel catfish. They are abundant in the channel catfish genome with a copy number of 32 000, having 500 base pair per copy, this family of nonautonomous transposon-like elements account for 1.6% of the channel catfish genomic DNA. Their high abundance and transposon-like terminal repeats indicate that they may play important roles in gene evolution and in genomic architecture of catfish. Similarity search for potential coding capacity of the Tipnon elements revealed that they contain sequence blocks that can potentially encode amino acid blocks similar to the para-type sodium channel proteins in cockroaches or house flies, proteins that function in the central nervous system as voltage-gated sodium transporters. Sequences surrounding the terminal inverted repeats are divergent from those used by the reconstructed Sleeping Beauty fish transposase.

    Notes: Abstract Lithium silicate powders were prepared by several sol-gel routes. Starting solutions contained equimolar amounts of lithium and silicon, but single-phase lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) formed only when local stoichiometry was maintained through gelation and drying. Gels prepared from solutions containing LiNO3, tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), water and ethanol were visibly homogeneous, but on drying the local stoichiometry was upset by the recrystallization of LiNO3. Consequently, a lithium-rich phase (Li2SiO3) was the first to crystallize on heating with a lesser amount of Li2Si2O5 forming at a higher temperature. Solutions containing TEOS and lithium methoxide formed a precipitate when combined with a water/ethanol hydrolysis solution. The precipitate dissolved before gelation, but the resulting powders crystallized into a mixture of Li2SiO3 and Li2Si2O5. The relative amount of Li2Si2O5 could be increased by adding HNO3 to the hydrolysis solution and using lower water contents. Precipitation was avoided by partially hydrolysing TEOS before adding the lithium alkoxide; these powders crystallized directly into Li2Si2O5 after heating at 550 °C. Gel-derived powders prepared using an Li-Si methoxyethoxide solution also crystallized directly into Li2Si2O5.

    Notes: Abstract Lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) coatings were prepared by spin-coating alkoxide solutions on to substrates [Si, SiO2, polycrystalline (poly) Si, sapphire] and heating isothermally at 500–600 °C. The effects of solution chemistry, coating thickness and substrate type on crystallization behaviour and microstructure development were investigated using atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Amorphous dried coatings began to crystallize into Li2Si2O5 at 500–550 °C. Coatings prepared on Si substrates (with a thin native oxide) using Li-Si methoxyethoxide solution crystallized into microstructures with large grain sizes (ca. 2–5 μm diameter) as compared with the coating thickness (〈0.3 μm). Nucleation rate in these coatings could be increased (and hence transformation rate increased and grain size decreased) by: (1) adding H2PtCl6to the solution to act as nucleation agent; (2) increasing the thickness of the coating; or (3) using a crystalline substrate (sapphire or poly Si). Coatings prepared using Li-Si ethoxide solution had fine-grained microstructures (⩽0.5 μm diameter) for all substrates. Chemical heterogeneity in the ethoxide system may have increased nucleation rate. Nucleation rate in this system could be decreased by using partially hydrolysed tetraethylorthosilicate as the Si precursor. The relationship between solution chemistry and microstructure was used to tailor microstructures in multilayer coatings.
