    Notes: Abstract The capacity of Fe-deficient cucumber plants to utilise water-extractable and pyrophosphate-extractable humic substances as a source of Fe was investigated. Plants were grown for 13 days in nutrient solution in the presence or absence of Fe and during the last 7 days water-extractable and pyrophosphate-extractable humic substances were added to the solution at a final concentration of 5 μg organic C ml–1. The water-extractable humic fraction did not significantly modify leaf area and dry matter accumulation, leaf total Fe or chlorophyll content of cucumber plants adequately supplied with Fe. In contrast, pyrophosphate-extractable humic substances caused a slight but significant decrease of all the leaf parameters considered, with the exception of the chlorophyll content. Root Fe content of Fe-sufficient plants was decreased by more than 50% in the presence of each humified fraction. Addition of each humic fraction to Fe-deficient plants led to a partial disappearance of leaf chlorosis symptoms with a significant increase in chlorophyll and leaf Fe content. Fe content of roots was also significantly increased in Fe-deficient plants by the addition of humic substances to the nutrient solution. These results show that Fe-deficient cucumber plants can utilise Fe contained in the two fractions of humified organic matter. However, by calculating the amount of total Fe accumulated per plant in the presence of water-extractable or pyrophosphate-extractable humic substances, it could be seen that Fe contained in the water-extractable humic fraction was almost totally used by Fe-deficient cucumber plants, while that present in the pyrophosphate-extractable fraction could only be partially absorbed. The results strongly support a role of humified organic matter in Fe nutrition of plants and are discussed in terms of a possible interaction between soil humic substances and the biochemical mechanisms involved in the plant response to Fe deficiency.

    Notes: Abstract  We studied the long-term effects (12 years) of municipal refuse compost addition on the total organic carbon (TOC), the amount and activity of the microbial biomass (soil microbial biomass C, BC and metabolic quotient qCO2) and heavy metal bioavaiability in soils as compared to manuring with mineral fertilizers (NPK) and farmyard manure (FYM). In addition, we studied the relationships between among the available fraction [Diethylenetriaminopentacetic acid (DTPA) extractable] of heavy metals and their total content, TOC and BC. After 12 years of repeated treatments, the TOC and BC of control and mineral fertilized plots did not differ. Soils treated with FYM and composts showed a significant increase in TOC and BC in response to the increasing amounts of organic C added. Values of the BC/TOC ratio ranged from 1.4 to 2, without any significative differences among soil treatments. The qCO2 increased in the organic-amended soil and may have indicated microbial stress. The total amounts of metals in treated soils were lower than the levels permitted by the European Union in agricultural soils. DTPA-extractable metals increased in amended soils in response to organic C. A multiple regression analysis with stepwise selection of variables was carried out in order to discriminate between the influence exerted on DTPA-extractable metals by their total content, TOC and BC. Results showed that each metal behaved quite differently, suggesting that different mechanisms might be involved in metal bioavailability

    Notes: Abstract In this work we studied the influence of Pb, Zn, and Tl on microbial biomass survival and activity during a laboratory incubation of soil. In comparison to uncontaminated soil, the microbial biomass C decreased sharply in soil contaminated with Zn and Tl, whereas the addition of Pb did not have any significant inhibitory effect on the level of microbial biomass C. Zn displayed the greatest biocidal effect, confirmed by the measurement of the death rate quotient (q D). The microbial activity, measured as CO2 evolution, increased significantly in contaminated soils, emphasizing the need of living organisms to expend more energy to survive. The greater demand for energy by microorganisms in order to cope with the toxicity of pollutants was also confirmed by measurement of the metabolic quotient (q CO2). In order to determine whether soil microorganisms affect the bioavailability of these metals through their mobilization and release, we studied the relationships between available Pb, Zn, and Tl, and microbial biomass C. The water-soluble fraction of Tl, available Tl, and Zn, and microbial biomass C were related significantly, but not Pb.

    Notes: Humic substances (HS) extracted from 14 Sphagnum peats of various geographical origin were submitted tocapillary electrophoresis (CE) in free solution and in entangled polymer solutions (25 gl-1 and 50 gl−1) of polyethylene glycol (PEG). Electrophoretic runs were made in uncoated capillaries (75 μm internal diameter) using a tris-hydroxymethylaminomethane (TRIS)-phosphate buffer (pH 8.3) eventually containing PEG and applying a voltage of 10 kV. The HS extract of a Lithuanian peat was fractionated by ultrafiltration into five fractions with a nominal mean relative molecular mass (M) of 3000, 7500, 20 000, 75 000 and 200 000 Da. Without PEG, migration times were not correlated with the logarithm of M, but linear relations were obtained with 25gl−1 and 50gl−1 PEG solutions. Both solutions separated the different fractions by size; the best regression and the largest interval of linearity, M from 3000 to 200 000 Da, was obtained with the 25gl−1 PEG solution. At 10kV and without PEG, migration times ranged from 6.5 to 8.1 min and did not differentiate the peats, whereas at 25gl−1 PEG, migration times ranged from 3.3 to 6.5 min and, when plotted as a function of either the r value or the von Post index (H), which are used to evaluate the degree of decomposition of horticultural peats, they separated samples on the basis of their geographical origin and probable type of mire complex. At 25gl−1 PEG, migration times also showed a well-defined linear decreasing trend with the increase of mean annual temperatures. These relations suggest the hypothesis that humification in mires goes along with an increase in the average size of humic molecules.

    Notes: The basic principles of the electrophoretic behaviour of humic substances (HS) still need to be systematically investigated. HS extracted from a Cryorthod (HS–1) and from an Haplumbrept (HS–2) were first fractionated by ultrafiltration to obtain two series of fractions of reduced polydispersity with a nominal mean relative molecular mass (M) of 7500, 20000, 40000, 75000 and 200 000 Da. Fractions extracted from the same soil behaved like an homologous series when tested by size exclusion chromatography, showing a linear relation of M with molecular size. When plotted against their mean M, the elution volumes of HS fractions extracted from the two different soils originated lines of different slope. Absolute electrophoretic mobilities of the fractions were determined in polyacrylamide gel slabs of increasing polyacrylamide concentration using a single buffer system; in all gels there was a close linear relation between the electrophoretic mobility and the logarithm of the mean M of HS fractions. Extrapolation of mobilities of HS–1 at zero gel concentration gave intercepts that did not differ significantly, showing that there was a constant mobility for all fractions in free solution. These results mean that charge differences have little effect on the electrophoretic mobilities of HS extracted from the same soil and imply the theoretical possibility of determining M distributions of HS by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in a single buffer system. Mobilities of HS–2 fractions were compared with those of HS–1: the latter fitted the regression equations of mobility against logarithm of the molecular weight obtained from HS–1 humic substances only in gels of small acrylamide concentration. Deviations were larger at small M, probably because of the increasing fulvic character of the fractions, and increased in gels of greater acrylamide concentration, indicating that charge differences may not be negligible when comparing humic substances extracted from different soils.

    Notes: We present a novel surface-controlled bistable nematic liquid crystal display. This black and white device uses simple monostable planar anchorings and a dielectrically positive nematic. The two bistable textures are, respectively, quasiuniform U and almost half-turn twisted T. Short electric pulses break the surface anchorings. Hydrodynamically coupled breaking of both anchorings creates T. U is obtained by breaking only one anchoring. Write and erase times for high resolution video are achieved at voltages compatible with the usual drivers.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: We report the first observation of an electroclinical effect at the TGB -TGB transition induced by an external DC electric field applied perpendicular to the pitch direction. Upon increasing the field, the smectic layers rather than the director field tilt over relative to the helical axis, allowing to detect the effect by X-ray scattering from well aligned samples. The observations are qualitatively interpreted in the frame of a mean field phenomenological model of a helically modulated electroclinical effect.

    Notes: Abstract: We report the first X-ray scattering investigation of spatial variations of the q-fold quasicrystalline symmetry (so-called commensurability) of well-aligned samples. A spatial resolution of was achieved using the ESRF microfocus beamline. The liquid crystal samples, contained between glass plates which were either parallel or in a wedge geometry, were scanned in order (i) to probe the mosaicity and (ii) to continuously change the balance between surface and volume effects. In the case of parallel plate cells, commensurability was observed everywhere throughout the sample, hence ruling out possible effects of mosaicity to explain the q-fold symmetry of the diffraction patterns previously reported when probed with a spatial resolution of mm2 in rotating anode experiments. In the case of wedge cells, the evolution of X-ray patterns with thickness suggested that commensurate lockin occurs for sufficiently thick samples with a width that is statistical.

    Notes: Abstract: In this paper we report an experimental investigation on the dynamics of the azimuthal director reorientation at a nematic-solid interface. Three qualitatively different kinds of substrates have been investigated: I) intrinsically anisotropic SiO-substrates ( -evaporation), II) isotropic SiO-substrates ( -evaporation) and III) rubbed PVA-substrates. In the case II), an in-plane anisotropy was induced cooling slowly the thermotropic nematic liquid crystal (NLC) from the isotropic phase in the presence of a 0.75 T magnetic field. The reorientation dynamic of the surface azimuthal director angle at the switching-on and off of a magnetic (or electric) field has been investigated. All the substrates show comparable azimuthal anchoring energies and two dynamic regimes: a fast dynamic response, driven by the bulk director reorientation and an extremely slow reorientation. The slow dynamics is explained in terms of anisotropic adsorption of NLC molecules on the solid substrate and is well represented by a stretched exponential.
