    Notes: A target of gaseous polarized hydrogen was formed by injecting polarized hydrogen atoms (produced by Stern–Gerlach spin separation) into a storage cell consisting of a cylindrical tube open at both ends. The target was placed in a storage ring to study the target characteristics (nuclear polarization, target thickness, radiation resistance). A weak transverse guide field (5 G) was applied to define the polarization direction. When atoms in a single hyperfine state were selected, the nuclear polarization of the target was measured to be 0.80±0.02. The areal density of the target under these conditions was (5.5±0.2)×1013 H/cm2, while for two spin states (applicable to experiments in high energy rings where a strong magnetic field can be applied to the target) the target thickness was found to be (8.2±0.3)×1013 H/cm2. The target polarization was unaffected by prolonged exposure of the target to beams up to 1 mA. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Presents a robust and unconditionally stable return-mapping algorithm based on the discrete counterpart of the principle of maximum plastic dissipation. Develops the explicit expression for the consistent elasto-plastic tangent modulus. All expressions are derived via tensor formulation showing the advantage over the classical matrix notation. The integration algorithm is implemented in the formulation of the four-node isoparametric assumed-strain finite-rotation shell element employing the Mindlin-Reissner-type shell model. By applying the layered model, plastic zones can be displayed through the shell thickness. Material non-linearity described by the von Mises yield criterion and isotropic hardening is combined with a geometrically non-linear response assuming finite rotations. Numerical examples illustrate the efficiency of the present formulation in conjunction with the standard Newton iteration approach, in which no line search procedures are required. Demonstrates the excellent performance of the algorithm for large time respective load steps.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Amphibolite sind in der Böhmischen Masse, östlich des Südböhmischen Plutons weit verbreitet. Ausgehend von ihrer geologischen Position, ihrer metamorphen Entwick lung und ihrer Geochemie lassen sie sich in drei genetisch unterschiedliche Einheiten teilen: den Rehberg Ophiolith, den Buschandlwand Amphibolit und die Raabser Gruppe. Der metamorphe Rehberg Ophiolith besteht aus einer ultramatischen bis mafischen plutonischen Abfolge, die von einem Gabbro/Gangkomplex überlagert wird und einer vulkanischen Folge mit Basalten, Andesiten and Rhyoliten, die mit tonigen und sandigen Sedimenten verknüpft sind. Der gesamte Ophiolithkörper wurde unter amphibolitfaziellen Bedingungen metamorph überprägt. Rock/MORB Diagramme und andere Elementdarstellungen, wie z.B. das Ti vs. V, oder das Ta/Yb vs. Th/Yb Diagramm sprechen für eine Entstehung des Rehberg Ophioliths in einer Suprasubduction Zone. Der Letovice Ophiolith in Mähren weist eine ähnliche Struktur auf. Geochemisch zeigt er stärkere Ähnlichkeiten mit MORB, enthält aber auch Elemente von tholeiitischen Inselbogenbasalten. Auch wenn es für beide Ophiolithe noch keine Protolith-Altersdaten gibt, scheint es dennoch wahrscheinlich, daß sie in einem Ozeanbecken, das den Brunovistulisch-Moravischen Kontinentalblock im Osten vom Moldanubischen Kontinent im Westen trennt, gebildet wurden. Die mögliche Fortsetzung beider Ophiolithe könnten im Norden der Stare Mesto Ophiolith und die Ophiolithe rund um den Sowie Gory Block in den Sudeten darstellen.
    Notes: Summary Amphibolites are widespread in the eastern part of the Bohemian Massif, east of the South Bohemian Pluton. Based on their geological situation, their metamorphic evolution and their geochemistry, they were separated into three genetically different units: the Rehberg ophiolite, the Buschandlwand amphibolite and the Raabs group. The metamorphic Rehberg ophiolite consists of a ultramafic to mafic plutonic sequence overlain by a gabbro/dike complex and a volcanic section with basaltic, andesitic and rhyolitic volcanics associated with pelitic to psammitic sediments. The entire ophiolite underwent amphibolite facies metamorphism. Rock/MORB normalisation plots and other element ratio plots, such as Ti vs. V or Ta/Yb vs. Th/Yb argue for a supra-subduction zone environment as site of the origin of the Rehberg ophiolite. The Letovice ophiolite in Moravia is structured in a similar way. Geochemically it shows a more MORB like composition but also a distinct tholeiitic island arc group. Although there is no age data for the protolith of both ophiolites, it is believed that they have formed in an oceanic basin separating the Brunovistulian-Moravian block to the east and the Moldanubian block to the west. Possible traces of the continuation of the ophiolites towards the north can be found in the Stare Mesto ophiolites and the ophiolites surrounding the Sowie Gory block in the Sudetes.

    Notes: Abstract The present contribution is concerned with dynamic stability investigations of arbitrary structural responses, in particular shell responses. In order to trace such nonlinear fundamental processes, incremental/iterative path-following algorithms are employed to the tangential equation of motion which is derived under special regard of finite rotation shell theories, elasto-plastic material behaviour, and motion-dependent loading. Occuring instabilities can be detected with the help of Lyapunow exponents as generalized concept for the detection of quantitative stability properties. Well known investigation procedures are recognized as special cases of the Lyapunow-exponent-concept for stationary, transient, periodic, and arbitrary solution curves in the phase space. A new numerical procedure for the determination of one-dimensional Lyapunow exponents is introduced to identify critical directions in the solution space for large discretized structures by reduction to relevant manifolds.

    Notes: Abstract. We have previously shown that mice deficient in the gene for the myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) develop normal myelin in the peripheral nerves, but show axon and myelin degeneration at eight months of age, suggesting that MAG is involved in the maintenance of axon-Schwann cell integrity. The search for molecules that might replace MAG during myelination revealed an overexpression of the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) at those aspects where MAG is detectable in wild type mice. To test whether N-CAM might compensate for MAG during myelination in MAG-deficient mice, double mutants deficient in both MAG and N-CAM (MAG−/N-CAM−mice) were generated by cross-breeding the single mutants. Whereas alterations of myelin development were not detectable in either of the single or double mutants, degeneration of myelin and axons occurred approximately 4 weeks earlier in MAG−/N-CAM−than in MAG−mutants. Furthermore, at 8 weeks of age, single fiber preparation and electron microscopy revealed that the number of profiles indicative of degeneration was substantially increased in MAG−/N-CAM−mutants when compared to MAG−mice. These data suggest that in MAG-deficient mice N-CAM does not compensate for MAG in myelin formation but partially substitutes for it in the maintenance of axon-myelin integrity.

    Notes: Abstract A simple tight-binding-like model of the electronic structure of simple metal clusters is presented which relies on the special stability of the first shell closures atN el=2 andN el=8. The wavefunctions, energy levels, and ground state deformations of the “ultimate jellium model”, which is based on a full Kohn-Sham treatment of the electrons, can be explained relying on a simple geometrical growth pattern complemented by an extremely simplified Hamiltonian matrix. The bulk and surface limits of the model also yield reasonable results.

    Notes: Abstract The mature major microneme protein of Sarcocystis muris cyst merozoites, which is known as a dimeric lectin with high affinity to galactose and some of its derivatives, was expressed in Escherichia coli as a histidine-tagged fusion protein. The recombinant polypeptide, which was recognized by a monoclonal antibody directed against the native lectin, was purified from inclusion bodies after solubilization and refolding, using a combination of metal chelate and lactose affinity chromatography. The apparent molecular mass of the refolded polypeptide as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoreses was 16 kDa, whereas gel filtration chromatography clearly demonstrated that the recombinant protein, like its native counterpart, exists as a homodimer of two non-covalently associated subunits. Inhibition of haemagglutination suggests that the combining site of the recombinant lectin recognizes N-acetyl-galactosamine as the dominant sugar, thus confirming the correct folding of the monosaccharide combining site in the renatured lectin. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first reported detailed characterization of a recombinant lectin from apicomplexan parasites, and may contribute to a better understanding of the process of host cell recognition and invasion by these obligate intracellular protozoa.
