Notes: Abstract We have isolated and, by electrophoresis, using agarose slab gels in the presence of methylmercury hydroxide, analyzed the mitochondrial RNA content of the liver of rainbow trout. The RNAs corresponding to most of the mitochondrial DNA-encoded genes have been identified. Furthermore, among the transcription products we have also identified the nature of the RNA 8 previously described in human mitochondria, and detected a novel transcript that may represent the mRNA for ND6.

Notes: A computer-controlled system for measuring M-H hysteresis loops of soft magnetic materials is described. It overcomes many of the problems associated with these kinds of measurements of low coercivity materials. The combination of "low drift'' hardware and measurement procedure makes software correction unnecessary. At every field step, the homemade integrator is reset in order to minimize the drift and to provide a way of separating the sample contribution to the signal from the field contribution and, consequently, to allow M-H plots. Furthermore, to avoid the residual drift of the hardware, the method of "two-way measurement'' is applied, giving drifts of 0.01% per hour. Results obtained for a FINEMET alloy film annealed at different temperatures are presented, illustrating the ability of the system to measure soft magnetic materials. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to compare the chondrogenic potential of free perichondrial with free periosteal grafts in the resurfacing of full-thickness defects of patellar articular cartilage in rabbits. We used adolescent New Zealand rabbits weighing between 2.4 and 3.6 kg. A 6-mm wide and 3-mm thick defect was created on the patellar articular surface. A total of 30 rabbits were randomly divided into a control group and two test groups. One test group received free perichondrial grafts (PC); the other received free periosteal grafts (PO). All the animals were killed 8 weeks after surgery. All the histological samples were scored from 0 to 17 according to a standard scoring system. Differences in the quality of the regenerated tissue were only found between the control and the test groups. There were no statistically significant histological differences between the grafted defects of the PC and the PO groups that there are not on any of the variables. The results of this study support that there are not significant differences in the quality of the repair tissue when using these two types of biological grafts.

Notes: Abstract We studied movements of individually marked greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus) born in the Camargue, southern France, between their two most important breeding colonies in the western Mediterranean (Camargue and Fuente de Piedra, Spain) from 1986 to 1992. The two sites differ in the frequency with which they offer suitable conditions for breeding. Flamingos have bred each year in the Camargue since 1974, but in only 12 of the past 22 years at Fuente de Piedra. Higher colony fidelity is thus expected in the less variable environment (Camargue), but if dispersal occurs competition might be an important factor causing this dispersal. Following years during which breeding birds in the Camrgue were disturbed (1988 and 1990) a higher proportion of adults changed colonies between breeding attempts (= breeding dispersal, 12.4%), while only 0.4% of flamingos breeding in the Camargue dispersed in the other years. As expected, flamingos breeding at Fuente de Piedra showed a higher rate of breeding dispersal (8.14%). No differences were observed between males and females. The importance of breeding failure as a factor causing breeding dispersal in flamingos was also confirmed by the movements of individual birds. The proportion of young flamingos that moved from their natal colony to start breeding at Fuente de Piedra (= natal dispersal) was independent of sex and age, but increased when breeding access to the Camargue colony was more difficult. However, natal dispersal was also higher in 1988 and 1990 (40.5%) than in the remaining years (1.2%), as was breeding dispersal. We discuss possible ways in which the increased natal dispersal among inexperienced birds could be linked with the increased breeding dispersal of adults in the same year.

Notes: Abstract The determination of the enzymatic activity of the yeasts has been applied to the identification of species, specially that ofCandida albicans. In order to know its usefulness in species of clinical interest, we have tested the commercial system API ZYM (Bio Mérieux) on 500 isolated strains of different organic samples, belonging to eight genera and twenty species. All the strains showed positivity to Phosphatase alcaline, Esterase (C4), Esterase lipase (C8), Leucine arylamidase and Phosphatase acid, and negativity to Lipase (C14), Trypsin, Chymotrypsin, α-galactosidase, β-glucoronidase, α-manosidase and α-fucosidase. Fourteen enzymatic activity patterns were obtained considering the substrates with variable results for the whole of the strains: Valine arylamidase, Cystine arylamidase, Naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, β-galactosidase, α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase. In the majority of the species, the enzymatic profile did not have very specific results since it is usually shared by more than one species.C. albicans is that which presents the greatest number of enzymatic variations, some of these are similar to those of other common clinical species, such asCandida krusei, Candida parapsilosis andCandida tropicalis. This system is proposed as a rapid method for identification and as an epidemiological marker of medically important yeasts.

Notes: Abstract Isolation of Hanseniaspora uvarum, a yeast of the ascomycetes group, whose anamorph corresponds to Kloeckera apiculata, obtained from stool and two ungual specimens from three patients, is reported. This yeast has been found in soil, water, various fruits, bivalve molluscs, crabs, prawns and fruit flies; in Spain, it has been described in the fermentation processes of some wines. In our region, it has also been found in the intestine of mackerel ( Scomber scombrus). Its finding in humans constitutes a clinical rarity.

    Topics: Biology , Medicine
Notes: Abstract The members of the genus Rhodotorula show a marked ubiquity. In man, they have been isolated from faeces, nails, skin, sputum, digestive tract and adenoids, forming part of the normal human flora, although in recent years cases have been reported of both local and systemic infection by this yeast. There are virtually no studies in the literature on the sensitivity of this genus to the antifungal agents in common clinical use. Therefore, it is considered of interest to study the microbiological characteristics and the susceptibility patterns of Rhodotorula isolated from clinical samples. A total of 35 different strains of Rhodotorula were studied. In vitro susceptibility testing to 5-fluorocytosine, amphotericin B, ketoconazole, fluconazole and itraconazole was performed. All the strains were considered sensitive to 5-fluorocytosine, amphotericin B, ketoconazole and itraconazole and resistant to fluconazole. As a conclusion, we can state that all the antifungal agents tested, except fluconazole, are useful medicaments for the treatment of infections by the Rhodotorula genus.

Notes: Abstract The sexual or teleomorphic state of yeasts has only been described in a few clinically involved species, mainly those of the Saccharomycetaceae family. With the aim of gathering information on their incidence in human pathology, a study has been made of a total of 2,135 strains isolated from clinical samples and cultivated in McClary agar. From these, 8 strains in teleomorphic state were identified: Kluyveromyces marxianus [1], Pichia anomala [2], Pichia farinosa [1], Pichia membranaefaciens [1] and Saccharomyces cerevisiae [3]. The two strains of P. anomala were responsible for fungemia; K. marxianus and the two strains of S. cerevisiae produced vaginitis; the other strains were oral cavity colonizers.
