    Notes: Abstract Objective: Dexamethasone is frequently used in premature neonates with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, however little is known about its disposition in this population. Methods: We evaluated the pharmacokinetics of dexamethasone in 9 premature neonates with a mean gestational age of 27.3 weeks and a postnatal age of 21.8 days. Results: There was a strong relationship between clearance (4.96 ml·min−1·kg−1) and gestational age (r=0.884). Pharmacokinetic parameters were grouped based on a gestational age of less than 27 weeks (Group I) and greater than 27 weeks (Group II). Mean clearance in group I and group II was 1.69 and 7.57 ml·min−1·kg−1, respectively. Mean distribution volume in group I and II was 1.26 and 2.19 l·kg−1, respectively. No significant relationships were noted between the disposition of dexamethasone and ventilator requirements or adverse effects. Conclusion: The pharmacokinetics of dexamethasone in premature neonates was related to gestational age.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of chronic exposure to high altitude on the pharmacokinetics of caffeine and cardiogreen (ICG) were examined in eight healthy males (23–35 y) at sea level (SEA) and following 16 days residence at 4300 m (ALT). ICG (0.5 mg · kg−1) was administered as an intravenous bolus and caffeine (4 mg · kg−1) in an orally ingested solution. The concentration of ICG, caffeine, and the primary metabolites of caffeine (MET) were determined in serial blood samples and their pharmacokinetics computed. In comparison to SEA, ALT resulted in a significant decrease in the caffeine half-life (t1/2, 4.7 vs 6.7 h) and area under the curve (2.5 vs 3.7 g · 1−1 · min−1), and increased clearance (117 vs 86 ml · min−1 · 70 kg−1). In ALT the area under the curve of ICG significantly decreased (85 vs 207 mg · 1−1 · min−1) and the volume of distribution and clearance increased (5.2 vs 2.41 and 532 vs 234 ml · min−1 respectively) compared to SEA. There was a significant increase in the AUC ratio of MET to caffeine indicating that either metabolite formation or elimination was increased in ALT. These results demonstrate that in humans, chronic exposure to 4300 m results in the modification of the pharmacokinetics of caffeine and ICG.

    Notes: Catalytic activities in sarcoplasmic fluid of Monterey sardine (Sardinops sagax caerulea) were identified. Hydrolysis at pH 7.6 on hippuryl-L-phenylalanine and hippuryl-L-arginine suggested the presence of carboxypeptidase A and B. Proteolysis on glutaryl-L-phenylalanine-p-nitroanilide, and inhibition by CuSO4, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride and N-p-tosyl-L-lysil chloromethyl ketone, confirmed presence of a chymotrypsin-like proteinase and other serine enzymes. No hydrolysis on α-N-benzoyl-D,L-arginine-p-nitroanilide occurred. Leucine aminopeptidase was detected by hydrolysis on L-leucyl-β-naplithylamide-HCl. Activity at pH 3 proved the presence of an acid proteinase but a slight inhibition by EDTA suggested the involvement of a cathepsin D-like enzyme. Cathepsins A and B and collagenase were not detected.

    Notes: The effective dielectric function, effective absorption coefficient and effective refractive index for a model of porous silicon (PS) are calculated using the volume and surface averaging method. The model consists of periodic Si wires with different surface coverages. This approach allows to obtain analytical results within certain approximations. The method uses experimental parameters to characterize the bulk and the surface. We choose the bulk c-Si, and cover it with three different possible surface skins: siloxanes, a-Si:H and SiO2. The results are compared with PS experimental data and other theoretical approaches for silicon wires. We obtain good agreement for certain coatings. Our results emphasize the important role of surface coatings in the effective response of porous silicon. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Silica gels were prepared by the sol-gel method containing varying amounts of Fe. The gels were irradiated with γ-ray doses in the range from 0.3 to 11.5 kGy. The thermoluminescent response was characterized before and after irradiation. When the samples were irradiated in the range 0.3 to 1.0 kGy, no thermoluminescent response was detected. However, when the samples were irradiated in the range from 1.0 to 11.5 kGy, they showed a clear thermoluminescent behavior and a linear dose–response relationship over the whole irradiation range, opening up the possibility of employing this system as a radiation dosimeter.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of multiple stressors on the benthic macroinvertebrate community were monitored in Tecuitlapa Norte, a shallow, perennially-astatic, warm, mesosaline, sodaalkaline lake in Mexico. Physico-chemical and biological variables were determined monthly for one year. Tecuitlapa Norte displayed a clear seasonal environmental pattern (dry and rainy seasons). The benthic macroinvertebrate community consisted of five species:Culicoides occidentalis sonorensis Jorgensen,Ephydra hians Say,Stratiomys sp.,Eristalis sp., andLimnophora sp. of which the first two were dominant and the rest scarce.C. occidentalis was the most important species numerically (76 percent of the total), whileE. hians dominated the biomass (73 percent of the total). Primarily salinity and secondarily pH appear to be the most important environmental factors controlling dominance of benthic organisms in Tecuitlapa Norte. Seasonal abundance dynamics of the dominant organisms was associated with phases in their reproductive cycles: environmentally-triggered (i.e., temperature rise, water-level descent) pupation and emergence periods. We concluded that whereas physical and chemical factors (i.e., salinity, pH) exerted the primary control on benthic macroinvertebrate community composition in Tecuitlapa Norte, another assembly of variables (e.g., water-level, temperature) influenced species distribution and abundance.
