Notes: Abstract The parasitoids Apoanagyrus lopezi De Santis and A. diversicornis (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) have been introduced into Africa for the biological control of the cassava mealybug Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae). We have studied competition between these species to investigate if they can coexist. Here we report on the influence of the simultaneous presence of non-conspecific adult females on searching efficiency on patches. Wasps of either species foraged on discs of cassava leaf with mealybugs, while at the same time different numbers of non-conspecifics were also depleting the patch. Patch area per parasitoid and number of hosts available to each parasitoid were equal in all treatments. In both species, the presence of other foragers clearly affected several aspects of the parasitoids' behaviour. Patch residence time increased with the number of non-conspecifics in A. diversicornis. In both parasitoid species, the proportion of hosts left unparasitized after the patch visit decreased with increasing numbers of females on the patch. The proportions of super- and multiparasitism did not change with the number of females. Both species produced more offspring during a patch visit in the presence of more non-conspecifics. These behavioural changes did not, however, lead to a change in the offspring production rate on patches. A. diversicornis produced offspring at a rate three times that of A. lopezi when one A. lopezi and one A. diversicornis foraged simultaneously. This is the first report of an aspect of interspecific competition where A. diversicornis has an advantage over A. lopezi. Interference between adult females thus promotes coexistence of the two species on P. manihoti.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the transmission of Borrelia garinii and Borrelia afzelii between male and female Ixodes persulcatus ticks. For this purpose the infection rate of partners from tick couples was determined by polymerase chain reaction and reverse line blot. In couples, where the male tick was infected with B. garinii, four out of nine female partners carried B. garinii. In eight couples, male ticks had a dual infection of B. afzelii and B. garinii and three female partners were infected by Borrelia spirochetes. Two female ticks carried B. garinii, and one female tick had a dual infection. No evidence for transmission of B. afzelii from male to female ticks was found among seven couples. In 45 couples where the female tick was infected, not one male tick carried spirochetes. The difference in the B. garinii infection rate between male and female ticks among these couples is highly significant. Our data suggest that transmission of B. garinii from male ticks to female ticks does occur. Sexual transmission of this pathogen may play an important role in the maintenance of B. garinii in I. persulcatus. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998

Notes: Abstract Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder that is characterized by dysmyelination of the central nervous system resulting from mutations in the proteolipid protein (PLP) gene. Mutations causing either overexpression or expression of a truncated form of PLP result in oligodendrocyte cell death because of accumulation of PLP in the endoplasmic reticulum. It has therefore been hypothesized that absence of the protein should result in a less severe phenotype. However, until now, only one patient has been described with a complete deletion of the PLP gene. We report a Dutch family with a relatively mild form of PMD, in which the disease cosegregates with a (G-to-A) mutation in the initiation codon of the PLP gene. This mutation should cause the total absence of PLP and is therefore in agreement with the hypothesis that absence of PLP leads to a mild form of PMD.

Notes: Abstract  The theory of divariant reactions is investigated in some detail and approaches involving simultaneously operating reactions and X Mg isopleths are combined. Using the Gibbs' method (Spear et al. 1982), a general equation is derived for X Mg isopleth slopes in FMAS and CFMAS, which may be applied to any divariant assemblage in these systems. Isopleth slopes are calculated for a number of divariant FMAS and CFMAS reactions inferred to have operated in Sri Lankan granulites, giving more rigorous constraints on the local P-T path. Isopleth slopes are also calculated for the trivariant CFMAS reaction orthopyroxene + plagioclase = garnet + quartz. The resulting dP/dT range from +8 to +18 bar/K. Application to Sri Lankan granulites confirms an earlier hypothesis (Faulhaber and Raith 1991) that a retrograde path with a dP/dT of ∼10–15 bar/K may cause garnet growth in charnockites and garnet breakdown in metabasites. It is shown here that dP/dT depends primarily on the Ca contents of garnet and plagioclase. Large variations in isopleth and reaction line slopes are possible, due to the thermodynamic effect of additional components in solid solutions, e.g. albite in plagioclase. This has a good potential for the assessment of the exact form of P-T paths. Equations to calculate isopleth slopes could be included in software packages aimed at defining P-T estimates, enabling geologists to derive realistic P-T paths.

Notes: Abstract Because most college and university faculty have considerable autonomy in the conduct of their teaching, norms that guide appropriate and inappropriate behavior for this role are needed. Recently, a set of four norms—interpersonal disregard, particularistic grading, moral turpitude, and inadequate planning—for undergraduate teaching have been delineated. This research addresses the question of whether entering graduate teaching assistants accurately anticipate these norms prior to beginning graduate study. The findings indicate that both faculty and beginning teaching assistants share subscription to the four norms of undergraduate teaching. Questions about the role of the graduate socialization process in the learning of teaching norms are raised and future research directions are suggested. Implications for practice are also proposed.

Notes: Unsaturated alcohols and glycols bearing carboxylic groups were synthesized from maleic anhydride (MA) and alcohols with 2 or 3 hydroxy groups. The halfester monomers were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy and were used for the preparation of urethane macroionomers and urethane acrylate graft copolymer latices. Obtained polymers were characterized by solubility and mechanical tests.
