Notes: Analyses the extent of Cadbury compliance and its impact on corporate performance in the UK. Comparing 1992 and 1995, we find that UK public companies have, in general, complied with the Cadbury Committee's Code of Best Practice and have adopted the recommended governance structures. However, compliance is more common among larger firms. Thus we find that duality is less common, firms tend to have more than three non-executive directors and that there has been an almost universal adoption of board subcommittees such as the remuneration and audit committees. However, little evidence is found to suggest either that the board characteristics recommended by Cadbury lead to improved performance or that moving towards them improves performance. The only governance mechanism which does positively affect performance is the presence of remuneration and audit committees.

Notes: The issue of executive pay has been the subject of intense debate in recent years. Discusses the factors determining executive pay using 1995 and 1996 data for a sample of 125 of the largest UK companies. Combines company performance and human capital characteristics as determinants of executive pay. Confirms the importance of company size as a strong influence on executive pay. Shows that profitability is a weak determinant of pay. Although human capital characteristics affect executive pay, the influence is not strong. When industry differences are taken into account, the impact of human capital diminishes further.

Notes: The purposes of this work were to determine: whether thickness of single layers can be used to accurately predict thickness and thermal resistance of multiple layer assemblies; and to identify variables affecting the total thickness (i.e. textile plus air layers) of bedding during simulated use. Thickness was determined when: materials were flat; and arranged over an infant manikin simulating use. Thermal resistance was measured using a guarded-hotplate similar to that specified in ISO 11092:1993(E). During simulated use, the site of measurement, body position, tucking, and product type significantly affected thickness of bedding. Equations for predicting thickness and thermal resistance (dry) of multiple-layer materials are described. While it was possible to predict thickness and thermal resistance of flat bedding from estimated values, extrapolation to bedding during simulated use was considered inappropriate, with significant differences of over 1,000 per cent.

Notes: The rate and volume of air exchanged between the bed microclimate and the ambient environment determines in part how much heat is lost from the human body. This study investigated the ventilatory characteristics of infant over-bedding to determine whether different combinations of bedding items (i.e. sheets, blankets, duvets) and types of tucking (i.e. loosely, firmly and swaddled/firmly tucked) affected microclimate ventilation. Microclimate volumes and air exchange rates were determined and used to calculate the ventilation indices. The presence of a duvet in the bedding combination resulted in lower ventilation indices than when bedding did not include a duvet. The type and combination of blankets did not significantly affect ventilation indices. The type of tucking had a significant effect on ventilation indices only when the assembly did not include a duvet.

Notes: Explores the purchasing behaviour of independent financial advisors(IFAs) within the context of the UK financial sector. Reports onempirical work in which attitudes of such independent distributorstoward identified supplier selection criteria were assessed. Set withinthe context of relationship marketing theory, seeks to employ findingsto develop a generic conceptual basis for approaching the marketing ofservices to independent intermediaries.

Notes: Six experimental batches of Pacific oyster larvae, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, were reared on a standard diet in the hatchery. After 8-12 days from fertilization, the larvae were separated into two to three size groups. These groups of larvae were then reared separately through to settlement. A sample was taken from each group when the larvae had reached the stage at which they were ready to settle for estimation of number, size and weight, and analysis of total lipid. All the spat that settled from each group were removed daily during the settlement period of 10-14 days. Selected samples of 1000 or more spat, collected from a single (day) settlement, were reared in standard hatchery upwelling systems for a further 30 days. Spatfall, as a percentage of the number of larvae in the group available to settle, was similar for all three groups of larvae, although it varied between experiments, and was positively correlated with the amount of lipid in the eyed larvae. The average spatfall, for all groups, was 44%. The dry and organic weights of spat that settled from the group of larvae that grew fastest were significantly greater than that for spat from the group with the slowest growth rate. Lipid content of the spat in the three groups was similar (9.3-12.4%). The spat that settled from the group of larvae that grew fastest also tended to be biggest after rearing in the hatchery for a further 30 days, but this result was not statistically significant. Spat from within the same group of larvae also grew to a similar size in this time, irrespective of whether theywere collected during the first 3 days of settlement, or after a further 5 days. In practical terms, the results of these experiments show that it is cost-effective for hatchery operators to maintain batches of larvae for as long as settlement continues, to maximize the output of spat numbers without any danger of wasting resources by producing inferior quality or slower growing animals.

Notes: The present investigation was carried out to measure the survival of juvenile oysters (spat) of a native species, European oyster, Ostrea edulis L., and an introduced species, Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, at typical winter seawater temperatures in the British Isles. Two size groups of each species were maintained either unfed or with low algae rations at 3, 6 and 9oC for up to 11 weeks. The majority of O. edulis juveniles survived for 11 weeks at all temperatures. Unfed animals utilized biochemical reserves and lost organic weight during this period. Fed O. edulis showed a small weight loss at 3oC, but increased in weight at 6oC and 9oC. At all temperatures, O. edulis preferentially utilized lipid reserves in treatments in which organic weight was lost. In contrast, C. gigas juveniles preferentially utilized protein as an energy source. All C. gigas juveniles survived at 9 and 6oC, but high mortalities (〉 95%) occurred after 3-7 weeks at 3oC. Both fed and unfed C. gigas juveniles lost weight, reserves and condition at 3oC. Juveniles grew when fed at 6 and 9oC. In both oyster species, the proportion of phospholipid (n-6) fatty acids, principally 20 : 4 (n-6) increased in those juveniles which showed a decrease in organic weight. Food cell consumption rates were lower at lower temperatures and were higher in O. edulis at 9oC than in C. gigas. The results are discussed with respect to recruitment and winter survival of small juveniles.

Notes: The fungus Chondrostereum purpureum, the causal agent of silverleaf, when grown in liquid culture or on agar, secreted extracellular proteinases into the medium. Proteinase activity in the mycelium itself was barely detectable. At least 95% of caseinolytic activity in the extracellular fluid (ECF) was inhibited by chelating agents. Fluid dialysed against EDTA was activated by metal ions, confirming the presence of metalloproteinases. Caseinolytic activity of ECF was also largely abolished by sulphydryl compounds and reagents. Superdex G75 chromatography and SDS–PAGE analysis of the proteinases present in concentrated ECF indicated at least four components with proteolytic activity. In addition to the major metalloproteinases, a very low level of a chymotrypsin-like activity was detected as well as high levels of the exopeptidase, leucine aminopeptidase. A wide range of caseinolytic activity levels was found when 29 C. purpureum isolates from New Zealand were grown in liquid culture, but much less variation was observed on agar. Proteinase activity was found throughout the infection zone of silverleaf-susceptible plants but could only be detected at the wounding site of resistant cultivars. The possible roles of these proteinases in infection and growth of the pathogen are discussed.

Notes: Attempts to define the qualities which make up leadership probably go back beyond the invention of writing: certainly, to the orally transmitted poetry of Homer and his peers. Yet satisfactory answers have been elusive. This article reports on a two-year survey which attempts to refine the grounds for debate further by benchmarking the features of leadership identified in the Exemplar Model against the competencies associated with high performing managers. The survey covered 105 senior executives and the perceptions of them by over 1,000 of their colleagues.
