Australian Financial Graphs: An Empirical Study (1999)

Notizen: The use of graphs to disclose financial information in corporate annual reports represents a significant dimension of financial disclosure management. This study replicates and extends previous research into financial graphs by documenting the nature and extent of graph use and departures from representational neutrality among the 1991 corporate annual reports of the top one hundred companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Eighty-nine per cent of companies use graphs; the mean number is 9.4, with diversified companies using the most graphs. The most commonly graphed financial variables are sales, profit, EPS and DPS. Evidence is found that graph use is contingent upon favourable performance. In addition, material measurement distortion is found in 34 per cent of all key financial graphs. Eighty-six per cent of companies have slope parameters which depart more than 10° from the optimum, thus impairing communicative effectiveness. A range of design strategies are employed which are consistent with the adoption of an impression management schema. No persistent systematic differences between forms of distortion and industry group are found. Comparison with prior single-country studies reveals that graphs are used more extensively in Australia than in the U.S.A., the U.K. or Canada, but that there is less evidence of impression management. This latter finding is consistent with the view that there are fewer short-term and capital-market pressures in Australia.

Notizen: The ArgumentErnst Cassirer's fundamental conception of symbolism (symbolic pregnance) derives from what may be called a bio-medical model of semiotics, not a linguistic one. He employs both models in his philosophy of symbolic forms, but his notion of the “prototype and model of symbolism” was not derived from linguistics. The sources for his conception of symbolism include the ethnographic and anthropological literature he discovered in Aby Warburg's (1866–1929) Hamburg research library, findings of medical research on aphasia and related conditions, particularly the work of Kurt Goldstein (1878–1965) and the theoretical biology of Jacob von Uexküll (1864–1944). The linguistic model of semiotics regards the bond between the signifier and the signified as purely arbitrary and conventional, but Cassirer traced meaning back to a “natural symbolism” of image-like configurations in bodily feeling and perception. In this way, his doctrine of symbolism assumed a form that undercut the distinction between philosophical Naturalism and Idealism. This helps to explain why in later years Cassirer developed his theory of Basic Phenomena. Cassirer's notion of the “prototype and model of symbolism” illustrates his method of thought, which eschews pure argument in favor of interaction with empirical research.

Notizen: Although Cassirer's four-volume Das Erkenntnisproblem in der Philosophie und Wissenschaft der neueren Zeit has long been highly regarded as an example of historical scholarship — Cassirer was awarded the golden Kuno-Fischer Medal of the University of Heidelberg in July 1914 for the first two volumes (published 1906 and 1907) — its importance for understanding his theoretical position seems to have gone unrecognized. In the English-speaking world it is, unfortunately, only known through the fourth volume, and when this appeared in English in 1950 it met with a negative, even hostile, reception (see Passmore 1968, 315f.).

Notizen: Abstract The gastrointestinal transit of multiple units (e.g., pellets), as determined by gamma scintigraphy, has been characterized by the application of statistical moments. Stomach emptying profiles can be described comprehensively by Mean Gastric Residence Time (MGRT) and Variance of Gastric Residence Time (VGRT) and caecum arrival data by Mean Caecum Arrival Time (MCAT) and Variance of Caecal Arrival Time (VCAT). This maximizes the data available, which is not the case when only described as 50% values. The statistical moments provide different information about the data observed compared to the classical descriptors, as there was only limited correlation between these two sets of parameters. Statistical moments therefore provide an important quantification of the process studied, and they can be used in any statistical test, where it is required to compare different experimental conditions.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To assess the potential of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a method of detecting water movement during the extrusion of pastes. Methods. Plug samples were made from mixtures of model materials and microcrystalline cellulose with two water contents at two different ram speeds to simulate ram extrusion. The extrusion process was stopped at different stages and analyzed for water distribution using MRI to assess the influence of water content and the speed of ram on water movement as the extrusion process progresses. Results. Two types of water movement were detected: vertical and radial. When extruding at the faster ram speed, water moved predominantly in the vertical direction, whereas when extruding at a slower ram speed it moved predominantly in the radial direction. At the beginning of the extrusion process a greater water movement in the wetter formulations was observed. Conclusions. MRI appears to be a useful approach to non-invasive water mapping, and is expected to contribute towards a greater understanding of the role of water in the extrusion of pastes.

Notizen: The toxic and teratogenic effects caused by the highly biologically active (all-E)-retinoic acid and its derivatives prompted us to synthesize a number of retinoids. We developed synthetic approaches to (all-E)-retinyl β-D-glucuronide 3, methyl (retinoyl β-D-glucopyranoside)uronate 5, (all-E)-retinoic acid β-D-glucopyranosyl ester 8 and (all-E)-retinoyl β-D-glucuronide 6 in high purity and yield. Compound 3 was synthesized under Koenigs-Knorr conditions from (all-E)-retinol and an α-halogenose. Compounds 5 and 8 were prepared by esterification of a silver salt of (all-E)-retinoic acid with an α-glycosyl halide in pyridine. (all-E)-Retinoyl β-D-glucuronide 6 was prepared by reaction of (all-E)-retinoyl fluoride with underivatized β-D-glucuronic acid. Compounds 5, 6 and 8 show biological effects similiar to those of retinoic acid.
