    Notes: Abstract Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD) is an autosomal recessive severe muscular dystrophy associated with brain malformation. The gene responsible for FCMD was mapped to chromosome 9q31, a region in which convincing evidence of strong linkage disequilibrium between FCMD and mfd220 (D9S306) was recently found. FCMD is also characterized clinically by a peak motor function which, at best, allows patients to sit unassisted or slide on the buttocks. However, a small fraction of patients acquire the capacity to walk unassisted. Whether such ambulant cases belong to the FCMD spectrum or to a different disease entity has been a topic of considerable debate. We performed linkage analysis for ten families with ambulant cases using DNA markers flanking the FCMD locus. The mfd220 locus yielded a significant lod score of 3.09 for ambulant FCMD. We also found evidence for linkage disequilibrium between ambulant FCMD and mfd220. We further conducted haplotype analysis in FCMD siblings with different phenotypes, one of whom was ambulant while the other was not. The results indicate that the FCMD siblings share exactly the same haplotype at nine marker loci spanning 23.3 cM surrounding the FCMD locus. On the basis of these results, we conclude that, genetically, ambulant cases are, in fact, part of the FCMD spectrum.

    Notes: The water-soluble portion of rat heme oxygenase-1 which lacks 22 hydrophobic amino-acid residues at the C-terminus was expressed in E. coli and crystallized in the form of a complex with heme by the vapor-diffusion method using polyethylene glycol 4000 as the precipitant. The crystals belong to the tetragonal space group P41212 or P43212, with unit-cell dimensions of a = b = 56.7, c = 186.7 Å. The crystal contains one heme–heme oxygenase-1 complex in an asymmetric unit and diffracts X-rays beyond 3.0 Å resolution with a conventional X-ray source.

    Notes: A DNA excision repair enzyme, UvrB, from Thermus thermophilus HB8 was crystallized by the vapor-diffusion method using lithium sulfate as the precipitant and β-octylglucoside as an additive. The crystals belong to the trigonal space group P3121 or P3221, with unit-cell dimensions of a = b = 136.0 and c = 108.1 Å. The crystal is most likely to contain one UvrB protein in an asymmetric unit with the Vm value of 3.8 Å3 Da−1. The crystals diffracted X-rays beyond 2.9 Å resolution. Although the crystals were sensitive to X-ray irradiation at room temperature, the frozen crystals at 100 K showed no apparent decay during the intensity measurement.

    Notes: Transient spectra following the v=1←0 excitation of the OH stretching mode of Brønsted acidic hydroxyl groups in normal and deuterated mordenite zeolites have been measured by a two-color picosecond pump–probe technique. When the OH and OD stretching bands were excited by resonant IR pulses, transient bleaching of the fundamental band (v=1←0) and the transient hot band (v=2←1) absorption signal were observed. For the OH and OD groups free of adsorbates, the spectral widths of the pump-induced signals were broadened by ∼4 cm−1 due to pure dephasing from the convoluted width of the pump and probe IR pulses. When the OH and OD groups were adsorbed by a Xe atom, the frequencies of the ν(OH) and ν(OD) bands shifted to lower frequency and at the same time the widths of both the transient bleaching and the transient hot band absorption were much broader than those of the isolated hydroxyl groups by the factor of more than three. Actually, the widths of the transient signals were about the same as those of the linear absorption signals. An adiabatic approximation has been employed to interpret the observed broadening/shift of the IR bands by making use of the results of DFT (density functional theory) calculations performed on a model cluster consisting of a Xe atom and an H3Si–(OH)–AlH3 substrate. The result agreed well with the observed spectral features. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Current–Voltage (I–V) characteristics of GaAs/AlAs double-barrier resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) with a Si-planar-doped barrier are studied. At 4.2 K the peak-to-valley current ratio decreased when Si was introduced to the barrier next to the electrode from which electrons are emitted (emitter barrier). On the other hand, the ratio did not decrease considerably when Si was introduced to the other barrier, i.e., next to the electrode into which electrons flow (collector barrier). To investigate the origin of the decrease in the peak-to-valley ratio, we evaluated the transmission coefficient experimentally, and found that the resonance transmission widths for the double-barrier RTDs are almost the same. This means that the reduction in the peak-to-valley current ratio is not caused by the broadening of resonance transmission width. To explain why the peak-to-valley current ratio is degraded, we then introduced a new model in which an excess current flows through donor levels in the emitter barrier. To confirm this model, we investigated the I–V characteristics of GaAs/AlAs single-barrier diodes. We found an excess current, which is probably due to a tunneling current through the donor level created in the barrier, when the barrier is planar-doped. It is, therefore, concluded that the decrease in the peak-to-valley current ratio observed for the RTD with the doped emitter barrier is due to this excess current flowing through the doped emitter barrier. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We study the influence of a fault zone on the critical slip displacement that is estimated seismologically outside the fault zone theoretically. It is generally known that the critical slip displacement plays a key role in characterizing the earthquake rupture process. the fault zone is modelled as a zone in which a number of parallel pre-existing cracks are distributed. A relatively simple rupture model is assumed in the analysis to elicit only the fundamental effect of dynamic interactions among the cracks on the estimate of the critical slip displacement. the rupture is assumed to occur instantaneously over each crack, and crack lengths are fixed in the analysis. the multiple interactions among the cracks are treated rigorously in the time domain using the boundary-integral equation method.Our calculation shows that apparent slip-weakening behaviour is observed outside the fault zone, and that it is caused by elastic-wave scattering due to the cracks distributed in the fault zone. the apparent critical slip displacement is shown to be larger when the distribution density of the pre-existing cracks is larger and/or the fault zone width is greater. It is also shown that the apparent critical slip displacement caused by crack scattering is generally larger than the critical slip displacement inherent in the rupture. As the distribution density of the pre-existing cracks increases, the difference in both displacements tends to increase.

    Notes: Plasma turbulence and anomalous transport by the electrostatic current diffusive interchange mode are studied by the nonlinear simulation based on the magnetohydrodynamic model. The turbulence is found to have a typical characteristic of subcritical turbulence. The saturation level, as a function of the pressure gradient ∇p, is confirmed to scale like ||∇p||3/2. This nature holds independent of the ratio ||∇p||/||∇pc|| where ||∇pc||, is a critical pressure gradient against linear instability. The turbulence-driven transport is also evaluated. The simulation result confirms the theoretical prediction, which is based on the self-sustained turbulence, with respect to the nonlinear growth and damping. Both the normal cascade and inverse cascade are essential in establishing the stationary turbulent state. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
