    Notes: Success in anther culture of rye (Secale cereale L.) has mainly been restricted to genotypes whose genome is partly determined by S. vavilovii Grossh. The aim of this study was to identify true S. cereale genotypes with anther-culture ability. The plant material used included the semi-wild standard genotype SC35, six single crosses of the ‘Petkus’ and 10 of the ‘Carsten’ gene pool, plus a double cross between SC35 and one of the ‘Carsten’ single crosses. Three anther-culture experiments were performed. Several single crosses within the ‘Carsten’ gene pool produced green plants. The ‘Petkus’ single crosses tested did not show anther-culture ability. As expected, the induction and regeneration rates of SC35 were higher than those of all other genotypes tested. The performance of the double cross was intermediate between its parents. The results demonstrate for the first time that anther culture in rye is a valuable tool in plant breeding. The data also show the possibility of transferring anther-culture ability from high- to low-responding genotypes.

    Notes: Abstract. Recently, the human orthologue to the cell cycle checkpoint genes rad17 (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) and RAD24 (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), called HRAD17, has been isolated and localized to chromosome 4. Independently, we have isolated the HRAD17 transcript and mapped it to chromosome 5q13 between the CCNB1 and BTF2p44cen genes. Furthermore, we have identified the complete exon-intron structure of HRAD17. The gene is organized into 14 exons, the translation initiation site lies within exon 2, and the stop codon within exon 14. Two further HRAD17 pseudogenes, HRAD17P1 and HRAD17P2, were identified on chromosomes 7p21 and 13q14.3, respectively, encompassing exons 3–14 and bearing 84% and 93% homology, respectively. Additionally, we have isolated the coding region of the mouse orthologue, Mrad17, and mapped it on chromosome 13 between Ccnb1 and Btf2p44, the same two genes between which it maps in human. The predicted Mrad17 polypeptide encompasses 687 amino acids and shows 89% similarity to HRAD17. Both genes are most highly expressed in testis compared to all other tissues, as shown by Northern blot hybridization. Histological studies, based on in situ hybridization with radioactively labeled antisense HRAD17 riboprobes, showed a strong expression within the germinal epithelium of the seminiferous tubuli in normal testis whereas in testicular tumors (seminomas) only weak, diffuse signals were seen. In light of the known function of the yeast orthologue at meiotic and mitotic checkpoints, as well as the strong expression in testis and weak expression in seminomas, we suggest a putative involvement of HRAD17 in testicular tumorigenesis.

    Notes: Abstract. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a widely distributed member of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily and a potent neurotrophic molecule for several neuron populations in the peripheral and central nervous system. We show here that adrenal medullary chromaffin cells synthesize GDNF mRNA and contain immunoreactive GDNF protein. GDNF immunoreactivity can be found as early as embryonic day 16 in chromaffin progenitor cells of the rat adrenal gland and becomes more prominent with age. Most of the chromaffin cells within the adult rat adrenal medulla are GDNF immunoreactive, including both the noradrenergic and adrenergic subpopulations. The functions of adrenal medullary GDNF are still enigmatic but may include both auto/paracrine roles and retrograde trophic support of preganglionic neurons in the spinal cord or of sensory neurons that innervate chromaffin cells.

    Notes: Abstract We investigated the impact of abiotic factors and trout density on distribution and abundance of diaptomid copepods in high-elevation lakes in North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA), Washington, USA. The most common large diaptomid, D. kenai (mean length = 1.88 mm), was able to persist over a wide range of abiotic factors, but the small herbivorous diaptomid, D. tyrrelli (mean length = 1.18 mm), was restricted to shallow lakes (maximum depth 〈 ≈ 10 m) with relatively high concentrations of total Kjeldahl nitrogen and total phosphorous. There was a significant negative relationship between the density of D. tyrrelli and the density of large diaptomids ( D. kenai and D. arcticus), which could imply interaction between large and small diaptomids. The abundance of large diaptomids was significantly lower in shallow lakes with high densities of reproducing trout (〉 250 fish ha-1) than in fishless lakes, in deep lakes with reproducing trout, or in lakes where trout do not reproduce and are 0periodically stocked with fry at low densities (average 179 fry a-1). In lakes where chemical conditions were suitable for D. tyrrelli, the small diaptomid was often abundant when trout density was high and large diaptomids were either absent or in low abundance. Our research suggests that trout density, nutrient concentration, and lake depth influence the abundance of diaptomid copepods in high lakes in NOCA.

    Notes: Abstract An anatomical study was carried out to determine the extent to which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could delineate inner ear structures. Anatomical preparations of human petrous temporal bone were examined and compared with the results of MRI in 20 healthy subjects to see whether the structures of the inner ear could be visualized. Imaging of the subjects was carried out in a 1.0-T MRI scanner (Siemens Magnetom Impact). Two stronglyT 2*-weighted sequences were used: a 3D-PSIF sequence and a 3D-CISS sequence. The 3D data sets were postprocessed using a Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) program. Our investigations show that it is possible to obtain accurate visualization of structures with a diameter of under 1 mm. In all 20 subjects it was possible to identify both the endolymphatic duct and the endolymphatic sac.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the time dependency of the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of head and neck malignancies during contrast-enhanced MR imaging. Then we would compare the CNR of dynamic snapshot gradient-echo (SGE) images with conventional spin-echo (SE) and fast spin-echo (FSE) sequences. Fifteen patients with squamous cell carcinomas were examined with T1W-SE, T2W-FSE, contrast-enhanced Gd-TlW-SE, and T1W-SGE sequences, the latter statically and contrast-enhanced dynamically. The CNR for all sequences and adjacent tissues was computed and the time to reach maximal CNR (Tmax) was determined for dynamic studies. The CNR was time dependent with two distinct Tmax at 6–18 and 60–160 s which corresponded to two different tumor enhancement patterns. Neither enhancement pattern correlated with distinct histologic findings or tumor grading. The CNR improved for the Gd-TlW-SGE images. The improvement was statistically significant in relation to T1W-SE and Gd-TlW-SE images at the floor of the mouth and at the tongue base. The good CNR of the dynamic Gd-TlW-SGE measurements justifies further investigations of this method in order to improve tumor delineation.

    Notes: Abstract. We have performed a high-resolution linkage analysis for the conserved segment on distal mouse Chromosome (Chr) 8 that is homologous to human Chr 16q. The interspecific backcross used involved M. m. molossinus and an M. m. domesticus line congenic for an M. spretus segment from Chr 8 flanked by phenotypic markers Os (oligosyndactyly) and e, a coat colormarker. From a total of 682 N2 progeny, the 191 animals revealing a recombination event between these phenotypic markers were typed for 23 internal loci. The following locus order with distances in cM was obtained: (centromere)–Os–4.1–Mmp2–0.2–Ces1,Es1, Es22–1.2–Mt1,D8Mit15–2.2–Got2, D8Mit11–3.7–Es30–0.3–Es2, Es7–0.9–Ctra1,Lcat–0.3–Cdh1, Cadp, Nmor1, D8Mit12–0.2–Mov34–2.5–Hp,Tat–0.2–Zfp4–1.6–Zfp1,Ctrb–10.9–e. In a separate interspecific cross involving 62 meioses, Dpep1 was mapped together with Aprt and Cdh3 at 12.9 cM distal to Hp, Tat, to the vicinity of e. Our data give locus order for markers not previously resolved, add Mmp2 and Dpep1 as new markers on mouse Chr 8, and indicate that Ctra1 is the mouse homolog for human CTRL. Comparison of the order of 17 mouse loci with that of their human homologs reveals that locus order is well conserved and that the conserved segment in the human apparently spans the whole long arm of Chr 16.

    Notes: The signature of rocket plumes can be used for detection, identification and guidance of rockets. The objective was to investigate the signature of various types of solid rocket propellants by application of spectroscopic methods. The emission and transmission characteristics of plumes were studied experimentally, the results were analyzed based on molecular bands and continuum radiation. The model formulations include a nitramine propellant, a double-base propellant and a composite propellant. Applied were rapid-scanning filter wheel spectrometers for the wavelength region from 1.2 μm to 14 μm with a time resolution of 50 spectra/s and a wavelengths resolution of 1% of actual wavelength. The UV/VIS wavelengths region was recorded by an OMA system with wavelength resolution of 0.1 nm and 1 nm and time resolution of 10 spectra/s. Molecular bands of water and carbon dioxide dominate in the near infrared and infrared. Depending on composition, continuous radiation indicates particles in the rocket exhaust. A code was developed to calculate molecular bands and continuous radiation using temperature and species distributions found by thermodynamic estimation to obtain the radiance of the plume. Comparison with experimental data delivered plume temperatures.
