    Notes: Abstract Proteinase (endopeptidase), trypsin-like and chymotrypsin-like activities were examined throughout the ontogenetic development of cultured Farfantepenaeus paulensis. Whole individuals from different larval and postlarval stages, and the hepatopancreas of adults were homogenized and assayed to quantify the enzyme activities of specific substrates. Proteinase activity was identified by substrate-SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Specific inhibitors for trypsin (TLCK), chymotrypsin (TPCK) and serine proteinases (PMSF) were used to identify activity zones of these enzymes in gels. Protein-specific activity of total proteinases, trypsin and chymotrypsin was negligible at the egg stage and at Nauplius III, increasing in the first protozoeal substage (PZ I), and reaching a peak at PZ III; it decreased again in the subsequent postlarval substages. Different patterns of proteinase activity were observed in SDS-PAGE zymograms during ontogenetic development. Active bands of 14.6, 16.4, 17.5, 19.5, 22.5, 23.9, 25.8, 28.9, 32.0, 34.4, 37.7, and 42.2 kdaltons were detected in the adult hepatopancreas. Proteolytic activity was detected on gels in PZ I, and intense activity zones of 16.4, 17.5 and 19.5 kdaltons were found up to Mysis I (M I). Intense bands of 39.1 and 53.5 kdaltons were observed only at PZ III and M I. Band-activity intensity decreased after metamorphosis to the postlarval stage (PL). The chymotrypsin inhibitor TPCK had no effect on the proteinase bands. Active zones in gel inhibited with both TLCK and PMSF were considered to represent trypsin. The inhibitory effect of PMSF alone on proteinase extracts indicated chymotrypsin activity. TLCK and PMSF inhibition also varied during ontogenetic development. The inhibition of bands recorded between 14.6 and 21.7 kdaltons suggested the presence of low molecular weight trypsin in F. paulensis. The 39.1 kdaltons band observed at PZ III and M I were trypsin-like. On the other hand, bands of 28.9, 32 and 37.7 kdaltons from the adult hepatopancreas seem to represent a chymotrypsin. We conclude that the recorded variation in enzyme activity may be associated with morphological and behavioral changes during penaeid ontogenetic development. The higher enzyme activity at PZ II, PZ III and M I may reflect the increased energy turnover associated with intense swimming behavior and food ingestion.

    Notes: Abstract The reproductive ecology of Pavona gigantea Verrill and Gardineroseris planulata (Dana) was investigated in the equatorial eastern Pacific region from 1985 to 1994. These zooxanthellate scleractinian corals were adversely affected in this region during the 1982–1983 El Niño warming event. Both species were hermaphroditic, with individual colonies showing sequential cosexual development, thus resulting in dominantly outbreeding reproduction. Sexuality was mixed, with high percentages of gonochoric and hermaphroditic colonies in both species. Approximately 1:1 male-to-female gonad ratios were found in gonochoric and hermaphroditic colonies combined. Broadcast spawning was observed in P. gigantea in the Galápagos Islands, and the sudden disappearance of mature gametes and the presence of spent gonads suggest that G. planulata is also a broadcast spawner. Colonies of both species with ≲200 cm2 (10 cm diam) live tissue were nonreproductive. Estimated ages of the youngest reproductive colonies were 11 yr for P. gigantea and 20 yr for G. planulata. The percentage of all colonies of P. gigantea with gonads at nonupwelling sites (Caño Istand, Costa Rica and Uva Island, Panamá) ranged from 37 to 47%, respectively; colonies with gonads from upwelling environments (Saboga and Taboga Islands, Panamá) ranged from 31 to 39%, respectively, and reproductively active colonies from the thermally variable Galápagos islands comprised 40% of the collections. Compared with P. gigantea, the numbers of sexually active G. planulata colonies were roughly onehalf at nonupwelling Caño Island (20%) and Uva Island (25%) sites, or less (10%) at the upwelling Saboga Island site. Peak reproductive activity in P. gigantea occurred during the rainy season at all study sites. In the nonupwelling Costa Rican (Caño Island) and Panamainan (Uva Island) sites, mean monthly sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) were high (28 to 29°C), but slightly lower than in the dry season (29°C). In the upwelling Gulf of Panamá (Saboga and Taboga Islands), reproduction occurred after mean monthly SSTs increased from 24 to 28–29°C. In the Galápagos Islands, reproductive activity peaked during sea warming, when mean monthly SSTs reached 25°C. Sexually active colonies of G. planulata, present only at the main collection sites of Caño and Uva Islands, were also observed during the wet season. The presence of mature or spawned gonalds in both species mostly around new and full lunar phases suggests that spawning is at least weakly synchronized with moon phase. Fecundity estimates disclosed the following nonsignificant differences between sites for P. gigantea, expressed as egg production cm-2 colony surface surface yr-1: Galápagos (10 300 to 30 800), Uva Island (4900 to 9800), Caño Island (1800 to 7400), Saboga Island (600 to 1300) Taboga Island (1200 to 2400). Fecundity estimates for G. planulata were considerably lower: Uva Island (700 to 1400), Caño Island (500 to 1000). The sexual recruitment of P. gigantea into El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) 1982–1983-disturbed, equatorial eastern Pacific coral communities has been low, with only moderate recovery evident since 1983. G. planulata has revealed no sexual recruitment where seed populations are absent or rare (Caño Island, Galápagos Islands), and only low recruitment (Panamá) in areas with colonies that survived the ENSO disturbance.

    Notes: Abstract Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) was used to determine the local structure of the luminescent centers in Tb3+ and Ce3+ -doped strontium sulfide thin films deposited by Atomic Layer Epitaxy (ALE). The rare earths were observed to enter mainly the substitutional sites but at the same time a part of the atoms form RES clusters (RE = rare earth). The presence of both substitutional sites and RES clusters has been observed for the first time in this study for rare earths in II–VI compounds.

    Notes: Abstract The support-vector network is a new learning machine for two-group classification problems. The machine conceptually implements the following idea: input vectors are non-linearly mapped to a very high-dimension feature space. In this feature space a linear decision surface is constructed. Special properties of the decision surface ensures high generalization ability of the learning machine. The idea behind the support-vector network was previously implemented for the restricted case where the training data can be separated without errors. We here extend this result to non-separable training data. High generalization ability of support-vector networks utilizing polynomial input transformations is demonstrated. We also compare the performance of the support-vector network to various classical learning algorithms that all took part in a benchmark study of Optical Character Recognition.

    Notes: Abstract The pac gene encoding the penicillin G acylase (PGA) of Bacillus megaterium ATCC 14945 has been cloned in Escherichia coli HB101 (proA, leuB) using a selective minimal medium containing phenylacetyl-L-leucine instead of L-leucine. The nucleotide sequence of this gene has been determined and contains an open reading frame of 2406 nucleotides. The deduced amino acid sequence shows significant similarity with other β-lactam acylases. Although the PGA of B. megaterium is extracellular, the enzyme produced in E. coli appears to have a cytoplasmic localization.

    Notes: Mesoscale air quality models are an important tool to forecast and analyse the air quality in regional and urban areas. In recent years an increased interest has been shown by decision makers in these types of software tools. The complexity of such a model has grown exponentially with the increase of computer power. Nowadays, medium workstations can run operational versions of these modelling systems successfully. Presents a complex mesoscale air quality model which has been installed in the Environmental Office of the Madrid community (Spain) in order to forecast accurately the ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide air concentrations in a 3D domain centred on Madrid city. Describes the challenging scientific matters to be solved in order to develop an operational version of the atmospheric mesoscale numerical pollution model for urban and regional areas (ANA). Some encouraging results have been achieved in the attempts to improve the accuracy of the predictions made by the version already installed.
