Notes: Abstract A 0, ±1-matrixA is balanced if, in every submatrix with two nonzero entries per row and column, the sum of the entries is a multiple of four. This definition was introduced by Truemper (1978) and generalizes the notion of a balanced 0, 1-matrix introduced by Berge (1970). In this paper, we extend a bicoloring theorem of Berge (1970) and total dual integrality results of Fulkerson, Hoffman and Oppenheim (1974) to balanced 0, ±1-matrices.

Notes: Abstract Objectives: To analyse from spontaneous reporting data the renal adverse reactions associated with the use of nimesulide. Methods: Case reports were obtained from a Northern Italian Regional database (Veneto Pharmacovigilance System), containing all the spontaneous reports filed between 1988 and 1997. The Veneto Region is the principal contributor to the Italian spontaneous reporting system, with an annual report rate of approximately 17 per 100 000 inhabitants. The clinical records of hospitalized patients were also analysed. Results: Of the 120 reports associated with oral nimesulide, 11 referred to suspected renal adverse reactions. The drug was taken by ten patients for a short period. All the patients discontinued the therapy and hospitalization was required in six cases. Other risk factors were identified in six cases. Discussion: Together with the new insights into the possible consequences of renal cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibition, the reported cases should draw the attention of doctors and patients to the importance of recognizing any possible signs of renal impairment during nimesulide therapy, although only extensive epidemiological data can define the real impact of its renal toxicity.

Notes: Abstract Glycosylated structures on the cell surface have a role in cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation. Repair of the airway epithelium after injury requires each of these processes, but the normal cell surface glycosylation of non-mucin producing airway epithelial cells is unknown. We examined cell surface glycosylation in human airway epithelial cells in tissue sections and in human airway epithelial cell lines in culture. Thirty-eight lectin probes were used to determine specific carbohydrate residues by lectin-histochemistry. Galactose or galactosamine-specific lectins labeled basal epithelial cells, lectins specific for several different carbohydrate structures bound columnar epithelial cells, and fucose-specific lectins labeled all airway epithelial cells. The epithelial cell lines 1HAEo− and 16HBE14o− bound lectins that were specific to basal epithelial cells. Flow cytometry of these cell lines with selected lectins demonstrated that lectin binding was to cell surface carbohydrates, and revealed possible hidden tissue antigens on dispersed cultured cells. We demonstrate specific lectin-binding patterns on the surface of normal human airway epithelial cells. The expression of specific carbohydrate residues may be useful to type epithelial cells and as a tool to examine cell events involved in epithelial repair.

Notes: Abstract In a graph, a chordless cycle of length greater than three is called a hole. Let γ be a {0, 1} vector whose entries are in one-to-one correspondence with the holes of a graphG. We characterize graphs for which, for all choices of the vector γ, we can pick a subsetF of the edge set ofG such that |F ∪H| эγH (mod 2), for all holesH ofG and |F ∪T| э 1 for all trianglesT ofG. We call these graphsuniversally signable. The subsetF of edges is said to be labelledodd. All other edges are said to be labelledeven. Clearly graphs with no holes (triangulated graphs) are universally signable with a labelling of odd on all edges, for all choices of the vector γ. We give a decomposition theorem which leads to a good characterization of graphs that are universally signable. This is a generalization of a theorem due to Hajnal and Surányi [3] for triangulated graphs.

Notes: Abstract Euglena acus, Euglena spirogyra, Phacus curvicaudus, Phacus pyrum and Phacus tortus isolated from Matanza River, Buenos Aires, Argentina, were grown in soil-water medium. When transferred to soil-water medium enriched with different beef-extract concentrations, a marked cell deformation could be observed in every instance, owing either to an extraordinary accumulation of paramylon grains or to a great development of some of them. In this paper, these morphological changes are described and their ecological implications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The phytoplankton of the Matanza-Riachuelo river (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied for a period of 15 months together with different physical and chemical variables, along an increasingly eutrophic in character downstream. 281 taxa were recorded within a seasonal succession, among these 49 percent were euglenophyta, 25 percent bacillariophyta, 15 percent chlorophyta and 10 percent cyanophyta. Multivariate procedures included cluster analyses and ordination by PCA of both species and samples, and stepwise multiple regression analyses were employed to assess the impact of the pollution on the phytoplankton. The effect of the alteration was different in each studied site. With one exception, the changes in the community structure described herein involved modifications of the basic species composition. According to the species present, it was deduced that the main pollutant was the high concentration of organic matter. Results of the Matanza-Riachuelo, Reconquista, and Luján Rivers studies are further discussed.

Notes: Abstract. Kinesin and kinesin superfamily proteins are molecular motors involved in important intracellular functions such as organelle transport and cell division. They are microtubule-activated ATPases composed of a motor domain that binds to microtubules and a cargo-binding domain that binds to specific organelles. While searching for the slow Wallerian degeneration mutation (Wld S ) on distal mouse Chromosome (Chr) 4, we have identified a member of the kinesin superfamily whose predicted gene product has the N-terminal motor domain of Kif1b and a novel C-terminal cargo-binding domain homologous to Kif1a. Kif1b is responsible for the movement of mitochondria along the axon, but the novel isoform containing the alternative C-terminal domain is likely to have a different cargo-binding specificity. cDNA library screening and Northern blot analysis indicate that the alternatively spliced form of Kif1b containing the novel 3′end accounts for the most part of Kif1b expression. We also found more alternatively spliced exons that can give rise to heterogeneous transcripts. Therefore, alternative splicing, as well as multiple genes, may contribute to the selective movement of diverse organelles by anterograde axonal transport. Kif1b maps on distal mouse Chr 4, within the Wld genetic candidate interval, but outside the recently identified triplication. There is, however, no evidence that Kif1b is the Wld gene.

Notes: Abstract During the execution of a parallel asynchronous iterative algorithm, each task does not wait for predetermined data to become available. On the contrary, they can be viewed as local and independent iterative algorithms, which perform their own iterative scheme on the data currently available. On the basis of this computational model, a parallel asynchronous version of the quasi-Newton method for solving unconstrained optimization problems is proposed. The algorithm is based on four tasks concurrently executing and interacting in an asynchronous way. Convergence conditions are established and numerical results are presented which prove the effectiveness of the proposed parallel asynchronous approach.
