    Notes: Abstract  Root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may affect protein and lipid composition of plants by altering P nutrition or by eliciting other metabolic responses in the host plant. This study was conducted to determine the effects of an AMF and soil P on seed protein and lipid contents and yield of two genotypes of durum wheat (Triticum durum L.). Plants were grown in a greenhouse using soil: sand mixes with different levels of P, and with or without the AMF Glomus mosseae [(Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe]. Percentage AMF root colonization decreased as P added to soil increased. The wheat genotype CR057 had higher AMF root colonization but lower seed P and protein concentrations than CR006. Without added soil P, protein concentration was significantly lower and lipid concentration and seed dry weight higher in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) than in nonAM plants. Seed lipid and protein contents were highly correlated with P content of plants. In nonAM plants, seed lipid and protein contents were low with no added soil P and did not differ with added soil P. Seed protein/lipid (Pro/L) concentration ratios of AM plants were higher than those of nonAM plants only when no P was added to the soil. The data indicate different patterns of seed P accumulation and different relationships between seed P and protein and lipid in AM and nonAM plants. Thus, both the presence and degree of AMF root colonization affected seed lipid metabolism in these durum wheat genotypes.

    Notes: Abstract  Plant ability to withstand acidic soil mineral deficiencies and toxicities can be enhanced by root-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) symbioses. The AMF benefits to plants may be attributed to enhanced plant acquisition of mineral nutrients essential to plant growth and restricted acquisition of toxic elements. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) was grown in pHCa (soil:10 mM CaCl2, 1 : 1) 4 and 5 soil (Typic Hapludult) inoculated with Glomus clarum, G. diaphanum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices, Gigaspora albida, Gi. margarita, Gi. rosea, and Acaulospora morrowiae to determine differences among AMF isolates for mineral acquisition. Shoots of mycorrhizal (AM) plants had 6.2-fold P concentration differences when grown in pHCa 4 soil and 2.9-fold in pHCa 5 soil. Acquisition trends for the other mineral nutrients essential for plant growth were similar for AM plants grown in pHCa 4 and 5 soil, and differences among AMF isolates were generally higher for plants grown in pHCa 4 than in pHCa 5 soil. Both declines and increases in shoot concentrations of N, S, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, and Mn relative to nonmycorrhizal (nonAM) plants were noted for many AM plants. Differences among AM plants for N and Mg concentrations were relatively small (〈2-fold) and were large (2- to 9-fold) for the other minerals. Shoot concentrations of mineral nutrients did not relate well to dry matter produced or to percentage root colonization. Except for Mn and one AMF isolate, shoot concentrations of Mn, Fe, B, and Al in AM plants were lower than in nonAM plants, and differences among AM plants for these minerals ranged from a low of 1.8-fold for Fe to as high as 6.9-fold for Mn. Some AMF isolates were effective in overcoming acidic soil mineral deficiency and toxicity problems that commonly occur with plants grown in acidic soil.

    Notes: Abstract: We exame several digital filter methods designed to accurately estimate excitation axis variations from observed polar motion at frequencies exceeding 1 cycle per day. These methods are developed from a discrete time series filter equation originally presented in 1940 by Harold Jeffreys, and subsequently revised over the past two decades. The filters derived here provide improved amplitude accuracy at the highest frequencies now observable in space geodetic polar motion data.

    Notes: Abstract There is controversy as to whether effects on mood play a role in mediating the response to corticosteroids in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If alterations in mood are important, it is conceivable that psychotropic drugs such as mianserin might produce similar responses to prednisolone in patients with COPD. Twelve patients age 62.5 y, with FEV1 29% of predicted and 〈15% reversibility to salbutamol completed a randomised, double-blind crossover study. After an initial three week placebo run-in period patients received three weeks of prednisolone 40mg daily or mianserin 60–90 mg daily with an intervening three week placebo washout period. Full respiratory function tests, bicycle ergometry and 6 minute walks were performed before and after the run-in and at the end of each period. Psychological and functional assessments were also made at each visit. Prednisolone significantly increased FVC, maximum ventilation (VEmax) and maximum heart rate (HRmax) compared with placebo, with mean for the difference of 0.251, 2.561 · min−1 and 12 beats · min−1 respectively. FVC, maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and HRmax were also significantly increased with prednisolone compared with mianserin. Anxiety scores were significantly lower with prednisolone compared with placebo. In contrast, mianserin had no significant effects on lung function, exercise or psychological parameters compared with placebo. The improvements in ventilation, exercise and anxiety scores following treatment with prednisolone were not reproduced by mianserin, suggesting that the effects of prednisolone in COPD are unlikely to be due to alterations in mood.

    Notes: Abstract The Global-Scale Wave Model (GSWM) is a steady-state two-dimensional linearized model capable of simulating the solar tides and planetary waves. In an effort to understand the capabilities and limitations of the GSWM throughout the upper mesosphere and thermosphere a comparative analysis with observational data is presented. A majority of the observational data used in this study was collected during the World Day campaign which ran from 20 January to 30 January 1993. During this campaign data from 18 ground-based observational sites across the globe and two instruments located on the UARS spacecraft were analyzed. Comparisons of these data with the simulations from the GSWM indicate that the GSWM results are in reasonable agreement with the observations. However, there are a number of cases where the agreement is not particularly good. One such instance is for the semidiurnal tide in the northern hemisphere, where the GSWM estimates may exceed observations by 50%. Through a number of numerical simulations, it appears that this discrepancy may be due to the eddy diffusivity profiles used by the GSWM. Other differences relating to the diurnal tide and the quasi-two-day wave are presented and discussed. Additionally, a discussion on the biases and aliasing difficulties which may arise in the observational data is alos presented.

    Notes: Abstract The first experimental studies of an electron beam generated in an X pinch on the XP machine (Cornell University, USA) and the BIN machine (P. N. Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences) are reported. It is shown that it is possible in an X pinch to isolate the effect of a plasma-generated electron beam on the multiply charged ion radiation. The intensities of the satellite lines corresponding to Li-, Be-, B-, and C-like ions are calculated for the Al spectrum on the basis of a collisional-radiative model with a non-Maxwellian electron distribution in the plasma. The effect of an electron beam on the multiply charged light ion radiation in an X-pinch plasma is demonstrated. Comparing our calculations with the experimental spectra, we conclude that the present model can be used to estimate the electron beam intensity.

    Notes: Abstract A new type of quasicontinuous emission spectrum from a femtosecond laser plasma near the Lyα line of H-like ions is obtained and interpreted. It is shown that these spectra are emitted by multiply charged hollow ions, which are present in the plasma on account of its ultrahigh density, which, in turn, is due to the use of high-contrast laser pulses for producing the plasma. A new spectroscopic approach based on analysis of the composition of spectral complexes of hollow ions is discussed.
