Notes: Abstract The role of ethylene, pure or in formulation, in the colonization behaviour of the olive bark beetle,Phloeotribus scarabaeoides (Coleoptera, Scolytidae) has been investigated in the laboratory. Ethylene has been found to be attractive in both sexes; the formulation ethrel 48 was active in an olfactometer up to several months. Ethylene, whose concentration varies with the developmental stage or the condition of the tree or its wood, may play an important role in the primary attraction of these scolytids to their host.

Notes: The effects of alloy composition and heat treatment on the intrinsic coercivity iHc of SmCo5 magnets were studied. Alloys having six chemical compositions near that of stoichiometric SmCo5 were used to produce magnets via the usual powder metallurgy techniques. Magnets were either as sintered (1150 °C) or sintered (1150 °C) and treated at 850 °C. The substantial increase in iHc due to the 850 °C heat treatment occurs reversibly and with a negligible change in lattice parameters, Curie temperature Tc and anisotropy field HA. Quantitative metallography and thermomagnetic measurements showed that the microstructural constituent present in addition to the SmCo5 phase in hyperstoichiometric alloys is composed of both the Sm2Co7 phase and the Sm5Co19 phase. Measurements of magnetization in dc magnetic fields up to 33 T suggest that HA is around 53 T, considerably higher than previously reported values. The coercivity of the magnets is discussed in terms of thermal equilibrium populations of lattice defects. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The semiochemical system of the olive bark beetle Phloeotribus scarabaeoides was investigated. During the course of their life-cycle, whole insects, excised hindguts, frass, wood and leaves were collected, from both the field and from a laboratory rearing system. Samples were analysed by capillary GC/MS, after solvent extraction, collection of air volatiles on a sorbent or solid sample injection. Olfactometer bioassays were used to test the different samples and individual compounds for attraction to both sexes. Decanal, undecanal, 2-decanone, 2-nonanone and 2-undecanone, as well as α- and β-pinene, were identified as attractive compounds.

Notes: Abstract Two experiments have been carried out to verify the effect of ethylene on the primary attraction ofPhloeotribus scarabaeoides under both laboratory and field conditions. The experiments were based on the enhancement of ethylene production by olive branches and trunks after the application of (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid. Under laboratory conditions, the beetles' response was strongly stimulated on the treated branches. Under field conditions, the treatment aided the location of the olive wood by the flying beetles, and the attack density was significantly greater in the treated wood at the end of the experiment.

Notes: Abstract The electrical characteristics of oxidized poly(thionaphtheneindole) were investigated as a function of ambient relative humidity (r.h.). The current flowing through a pressed pellet of material between two massive gold electrodes plotted against voltage gives a wave-shaped curve with a halfwave potential at V 〈$〉=〈$〉~3V. The current recorded at 4V (plateau of the wave) is a sigmoidal function of r.h. with the inflexion point at ~60%. An interpretation of these findings is given, based on the influence of water on the dielectric constant of the material and on acid–base equilibrium between poly(thionaphtheneindole) and water, from which protons are produced. The behaviour of poly (thionaphtheneindole) as the active component of an amperometric humidity sensor is also reported.

Notes: This study examines the relationship of the reproductive and reserve storage cycles and spat settlement of the Queen scallop (Aequipecten opercularis) to environmental factors. The possibility of farming this species from spat settled on collectors is considered. The gonad condition index shows maximum values between mid-May and early August. Another peak occurs in mid-November. In spring and summer, the energy needed for gametogenesis is derived from food, although it is possible that direct transfer may occur from the digestive gland to the gonad. The glycogen and lipid content of the reserve organs reaches maximum values between late summer and early autumn. The energy requirements related to gametogenesis, which begins in autumn, involve the consumption of accumulated reserves with the resulting reduction in the condition indices. There is a positive correlation between temperature and the condition indices of the digestive gland, the adductor muscle and their lipid and glycogen content, respectively. Two settlement periods were recorded, one in winter, which could not be associated with the spawning of the experimental animals, and another in summer, which coincided with the spawning that took place in spring. The reduced gonad indices recorded at the end of the summer and in winter did not lead to settlement.

Notes: The conductivity of poly(p-phenylene sulfide) (PPS) amorphous samples sandwiched between metallic electrodes has been studied as a function of applied voltage, temperature, and electrode material. The voltage (U) dependence of the currents for electric fields within the range 103-106 V/cm exhibits exp βU1/2 behavior with β = βSchottky below the glass transition temperature (Tg ≊ 90°C), and β = βPoole-Frenkel above Tg. Coordinated temperature measurements of dc currents with different metallic contacts and thermally stimulated currents (TSC) indicate, however, that the conductivity at T 〈 Tg is consistent with the so-called “anomalous” Poole-Frenkel effect rather than the Schottky effect. Consequently, the p-type conductivity in amorphous PPS is proposed to be a bulk-limited process due to ionization of two different types of acceptor centers in the presence of neutral hole traps. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
