    Notes: We report on the relationship between material disorder and nonlinear optical response for a conjugated polymer. Inverse Raman scattering, the technique used here, is sensitive to the transition cross sections of both the purely electronic (Sv=01↔Sv=00) and vibronic (Sv=01↔Sv=10) transitions accessed, and both of these quantities are related to the extent of disorder in the polymer backbone. We have verified these morphology dependencies using crystalline and amorphous samples of the polydiacetylene poly(4BCMU). The magnitude of the nonlinear response per backbone repeat unit in the amorphous material is comparable to that of the crystalline form because of the large potential well displacement between the ground and excited electronic states characteristic of the disordered material. This increased potential well displacement compensates for the nonlinear response lost to the reduced macroscopic polymer alignment associated with the two-dimensionally isotropic spin cast film. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed and demonstrated a pump-probe laser spectroscopic scheme to measure ground state vibrational population relaxation. There are two significant advantages to this technique over alternative measurement methods. The first is that the detection sensitivity of the pump-probe method is limited by the shot noise present on the probe laser and the second is that, because of the manner in which the ground state vibration(s) are populated, it is possible to interrogate T1 processes for degenerate donor–acceptor conditions. We detail in this article the form of the experimental stimulated signal, the effect of the detection scheme used, and the consequences of spontaneous (Boltzmann) population of ground state vibrations. A central conclusion of this work is that, even for small signal limit pump-probe experiments, absorption, stimulated emission, and spontaneous emission all play important roles in collectively determining the form of the experimental signal. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  Using ratio-tracking data obtained at three sites, we assessed the effects of season and of neighbour avoidance on the activity and patterns of home range use by European moles (Talpa europaea). The home ranges of non-breeding male and female moles did not differ significantly in size, and averaged 2324 m2 (minimum convex polygon). Although overlap between ranges was small (an average of 12.8% of each range being shared with neighbours and an average of only 3.3% of 2×2 m grid cells were shared with an individual neighbour, ranges were not oriented to avoid neighbours. Non-breeding male/female neighbours tended to share more of their grid cells (3.9±5.7%) mean ±SD than did neighbours of the same sex (male:male 1.2±0.95%; female:female 1.1±1.3%), but there was no significant difference in overlap between any combination of sex pairings. On average, each mole spent only 0.9% of its time within 6 m of another mole, and only 3 out of 46 dyads showed evidence of being attracted to each other; there was no evidence from the simultaneous movement patterns of neighbouring moles that they avoided each other. Although moles tended to return to the same part of their range at the same time on successive days, there was also some indication of gradual changes in the spatial pattern of daily home range use. Moles had a triphasic pattern of activity, but this became tetraphasic under drought conditions. There were significant differences between sites, but not between sexes, in sleeping behaviour and activity patterns. These differences could be related to seasonal differences in soil moisture and thus probably to prey renewal rates. We conclude that in our sites, the activity patterns and movements of moles depend on the temporal and spatial dispersion of food, rather than on short-term interactions between the movements of neighbours.

    Notes: Abstract The catalytic properties of a Sn/V/Sb mixed oxide for propane ammoxidation to acrylonitrile are studied in this paper. In particular the antimony and vanadium amounts were changed in order to optimize the relative atomic ratio. The ternary sample with the best catalytic performance was compared with the analogous binary samples (Sn/Sb and Sb/V). The results obtained indicate that vanadium is responsible for the paraffin activation, nevertheless much vanadium produces a lot of carbon oxides. Antimony is responsible for the insertion of nitrogen in the molecule (it can be considered as an acrylonitrile selectivity modulator); nevertheless, too much antimony deactivates the catalyst. Tin does not act only as a dispersive matrix for the active sites, but leads to the formation of a polyfunctional catalyst, increasing the rate of acrylonitrile formation from the intermediate propene. From a structural point of view, this catalytic system can be described as a homogeneous system, containing microfields of rutile type oxide (SnO2), promoted with antimony and vanadium in substitutional solid solution, dispersed in an excess of amorphous antimony oxide.

    Notes: Abstract Anticipating more stringent emission limits, Rhône-Poulenc has developed a new generation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst named DN115 improving performances especially at low temperature. Data on the commercially available vanadium oxide-based catalyst DN115 are presented. Effects of operating temperature, pressure, gas composition and space velocity are also investigated. A kinetic model has been established. The DN115 catalyst is also effective for the control of a variety of other NOx emissions, such as industrial boilers like chemical waste incineration or other chemical processes.
