Notes: Abstract This study presents the results of the characterisation of 17 strains ofLeishmania by isoenzyme electrophoresis from a focus of leishmaniasis in southern Spain: two from human visceral leishmaniasis, four from human cutaneous leishmaniasis and 11 from sandflies. The 17 strains are grouped in 6 zymodemes characterised by their variability as regards to the electrophoretic mobility of the enzymes MDH, G6PD, NP and ME. Thus, we confirm the high intraspecific variability ofLeishmania (L.) infantum in a focus of southern Spain, as already suggested by previous studies. Zymodemes GR-15 and GR-17 are also described for the first time in Spain, and they characteristically possess the same relative electrophoretic mobility in the enzyme ME (93). Sixteen zymodemes of theL. infantum complex found in southern Spain were numerically analysed on the basis of the enzymatic profiles of 122Leishmania strains characterised from this area.

Notes: Abstract  The genital disc of Drosophila, which gives rise to the genitalia and analia of adult flies, is formed by cells from different embryonic segments. To study the organization of this disc, the expressions of segment polarity and homeotic genes were investigated. The organization of the embryonic genital primordium and the requirement of the engrailed and invected genes in the adult terminalia were also analysed. The results show that the three primordia, the female and male genitalia plus the analia, are composed of an anterior and a posterior compartment. In some aspects, each of the three primordia resemble other discs: the expression of genes such as wingless and decapentaplegic in each anterior compartment is similar to that seen in leg discs, and the absence of engrailed and invected cause duplications of anterior regions, as occurs in wing discs. The absence of lineage restrictions in some regions of the terminalia and the expression of segment polarity genes in the embryonic genital disc suggest that this model of compartmental organization evolves, at least in part, as the disc grows. The expression of homeotic genes suggests a parasegmental organization of the genital disc, although these genes may also change their expression patterns during larval development.

Notes: Abstract. The effects of a long-term blockade of L-type Ca2+ channels on membrane currents and on the number of dihydropyridine binding sites were investigated in skeletal muscle fibers. Ca2+ currents (I Ca) and intramembrane charge movement were monitored using a voltage-clamp technique. The peak amplitude of I Ca increased by more than 40% in fibers that were previously incubated for 24 hr in solutions containing the organic Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine or in Ca2+-free conditions. A similar incubation period with Cd2+, an inorganic blocker, produced a moderate increase of 20% in peak I Ca. The maximum mobilized charge (Q max) increased by 50% in fibers preincubated in Ca2+-free solutions or in the presence of Cd2+. Microsomal preparations from frog skeletal muscle were isolated by differential centrifugation. Preincubation with Cd2+ prior to the isolation of the microsomal fraction doubled the number of 3H-PN200-110 binding sites and produced a similar increase in the values of the dissociation constant. The increase in the number of binding sites is consistent with the increase in the peak amplitude of I Ca as well as with the increase in Q max.

Notes: Summary. The bending terms in a shell are small with respect to membrane ones as the thickness tends to zero. Consequently, the membrane approximation gives a good description of vibration properties of a thin shell. This vibration problem is associated with a non-compact resolvent operator, and spectral pollution could appear when computing Galerkin approximations. That is to say, there could exist sequences of eigenvalues of the approximate problems that converge to points of the resolvent set of the exact problem. We give an account of the state of the art of this problem in shell theory. A description of the phenomenon and its interpretation in terms of spectral families are given. A theorem of localization of the region where pollution may appear is stated and its complete proof is published for the first time. Recipes are given for avoiding the pollution as well as indications on the possibility of a posteriori elimination.

Notes: : This paper describes a procedure to design pluvial drainage systems in such a way as to prevent large excavation volumes and erosive velocities. To this end the storage capacity of the channel system is taken into account. In a preliminary step, the procedure employs an approximate method to determine the channel dimensions. Therefore, the dimensions are adjusted by means of a numerical method of solution of the unsteady flow equations. An example is included.

Notes: We discuss the magnetization processes in sensors based on the superposition of a magneto- restrictive amorphous ribbon over a piezoelectric plate. These devices show an unusual behavior of the null condition in the response curves, which we have related theoretically and experimentally to the coercive force of the magnetic sample and to changes in the magnetic domain pattern for frequencies near the longitudinal piezoelectric resonance frequency. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Limited previous experience with the mean value total dressing (MVTD) method had shown that MVTD energies for closed shell systems are generally better than CCSD(T) ones compared to FCI. The method, previously published as total dressing 2′(td-2′), is based on the single reference intermediate Hamiltonian theory. It is not a CC method but deals in a great part with the same physical effects that CC methods that incorporate amplitudes of triples such as CCSDT or its CCSDT-1n approaches. A number of test calculations comparing to diverse CC methods, as well as FCI and experiment when available, have been performed. The tests concern equilibrium energies in NH3 and CH2, equilibrium energies and distances in some diatomics (BF, NO+, CN+, C2, BeO), different bond breaking situations (H2O, BH, HF, SiH2) and spectroscopic properties of different bonding conditions (Li2, LiNa, LiBe+, NeH+, and O3). The results are in general closer to the full CCSDT ones in the equilibrium regions and close to CCSDT-1 along most dissociation curves. A few exceptions to this rule are analyzed with the help of an approach to MVTD that does not take into account the effects of linked quadriexcitations. Such analysis suggests the interest of improving the treatment of effects of linked triples in the MVTD model. The separate contributions of linked and unlinked triples and quadruples are also analyzed for some of the above diatomics representing different behaviors of bond breaking. The interest of such analysis is illustrated in the NeH+ molecule. The MVTD results show, in general, a high quality, provided that the nature of the correlation problem does not become largely multiconfigurational, as occurs in multiple bond dissociation or in the asymmetric stretching of ozone. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this paper we study the magnetic behavior of amorphous ferromagnetic ribbons having helical anisotropy with the helix axis perpendicular to the sample surface. It is shown that the magnetization processes under the action of a longitudinal magnetic field can be controlled by the nonuniform field produced by an alternating current, of the same frequency than the exciting field, flowing through the sample. Hysteresis loops with very different susceptibilities and coercive fields have been obtained by varying the amplitude of the current intensity and the phase differences between the exciting magnetic field and the current through the sample. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A versatile remotely controlled fast reciprocating Langmuir probe has been developed for the TJ-II stellarator. The main components of the system are a removable head, containing the measurement tips, and a displacement system that enables the probe to be displaced in vacuum. The probe displacement system has two different components: a slow one (course length≤0.8 m) to set the probe at the initial measurement position, and a fast one (run length=0.1 m) to obtain the desired measurements within an adjustable time interval during the plasma discharge. The radial movement of the probe is controlled remotely by means of a programmable logical control system, with a radial resolution of better than 1 mm. The fast displacement of the probe (up to 1.7 m/s) is achieved by using a pneumatic system. Its position as a function of time is monitored by means of the on-line response of a linear resistor attached to the fast displacement system. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A device to obtain an estimate of the spectrum of a time-variable magnetic field has been developed. The amplitude of each spectral component of the magnetic field series is obtained by analyzing with a double demodulation technique the signal generated from a flux-gate-like detector operating in open loop configuration. This device shows a sensitivity of about 1 mV/nT in the range from 0 to 300 Hz. For frequencies higher than 300 Hz the sensitivity decreases, and a correction factor that depends on the transfer function of the electronic device must be applied. The present device can be applied to environmental measurements, industrial applications, traffic control, and scientific research. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
