Notes: Kinetic studies on the nucleophilic cleavage of phthalimide (PTH) in buffers of 2-hydroxyethylamine and 2-methoxyethylamine reveal nonlinear plots of kn vs. [Buf]T (at constant pH) where kn and [Buf]T represent apparent second-order rate constant and total amine buffer concentration, respectively. The nonlinear variation of kn against [Buf]T is attributed to the occurrence of a stepwise mechanism in the aminolysis of PTH. Intermolecular general base catalysis is detected in the reactions of both amines with nonionized PTH (SH) only within the pH range of the present study. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Pseudo-first-order rate constants (k1 obs) for the reaction of MeNHOH with NCPH obey the relationship: k1 obs=k′b[MeNHOH]T2 where [MeNHOH]T represents total concentration of N-methylhydroxylamine buffer. The rate constants, k1 obs obtained at different total concentration of acetate buffer ([Buf]T) in the presence of 0.004 mol dm-3 MeNHOH follow the relationship: k1 obs=kb[Buf]T. The values of acetate buffer-catalyzed rate constant (kb) at different pH reveal the occurrence of both general base- and general acid- or general base-specific acid-catalysis in the reaction of MeNHOH with NCPH. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The effects of mixed CH3CN(SINGLEBOND)H2O solvents on rates of aminolysis of ionized phenyl salicylate, PS-, reveal a nonlinear decrease in the nucleophilic second-order rate constants, knms, (for aminolysis) with increase in the content of CH3CN until it becomes ∼50%, v/v. The values of knms remain almost unchanged with change in the CH3CN content within 50 to 70 or 80%, v/v. The effects of mixed CH3CN(SINGLEBOND)H2O solvents on pKa of leaving group, phenol, and protonated amine nucleophile have been concluded to be the major source for the observed mixed solvent effects on knms. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
