Notes: A series of copper bilirubinate complexes (CuBR) was synthesized in solution and in solid state to mimic the black color of the black-pigment gallstone and to explore the formation mechanism of the gallstonein vitro. The variation of the copper contents of these samples indicated that CuBR also exhibits nonstoichiometric characteristics from the FTIR study, i.e., both the so-called acid and neutral copper complex moieties exist in CuBR. The NH groups in pyrrole and lactam groups of bilirubin (H2BR) are binding to the copper ions. An EPR study demonstrates the generation of free radicals and the variation of its electronic structure and conjugation system in the skeleton of H2BR molecule during complex formation. A polymer of CuBR may form through the reaction of H2BR with copper ions. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Spectroscopic studies of various types of gallstones carried out in China are reviewed. Three basic classes of gallstones are surveyed: cholesterol stones, brown pigment stones, and black pigment stones. The emphasis of this review is on brown gallstones. The primary spectroscopic methods used in the studies surveyed are Fourier transform infrared absorption and Fourier transform Raman scattering. Chemical components studied in gallstones include cholesterol, bile pigments, glycoproteins, proteins, bilirubin metal complexes, and salts of calcium and other metals. Further studies are needed characterize the relationship of these components to more complex features of gallstones. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biospectroscopy 3: 371-380, 1997

Notes: The high-temperature mass spectrometric Knudsen effusion method has been used to study the vaporization processes and thermodynamic properties of the B2O3—Al2O3 system in the temperature range 1248-1850 K. Data on the B2O3 partial vapour pressures and the B2O3 activities in the system under consideration were obtained. The enthalpies of formation of Al4B2O9 and Al18B4O33 have been evaluated from the values of the enthalpies of B2O3 sublimation from boron oxide and from these compounds. Comparison is made between the available phase diagram of the B2O3—Al2O3 system and the results obtained in the present study, using the complete isothermal vaporization method.

Notes: A system based on the EDAX 9100 analyser was developed to obtain concentration profiles. Even though the system can be used on any type of flat specimens, in this study it was used for measuring the tungsten (W) concentration on rough spherical specimens of the W-γ-Al2O3 supported catalyst. The concentration gradient of the active component from the periphery to the centre of the particle is often an important factor in determining catalyst performance. The purpose was to determine the concentration profile of W along the radius of a sphere with a large enough number of experimental points to draw accurate information in a short time. In this way, a considerable number of impregnated spheres can be analysed, and average results can be calculated and taken as representative values of the population under study. The method developed provides highly satisfactory results, making it very useful for the systematic study of this type of specimen. Obviously, the use of this system can be extended to metallurgical and mineralogical specimens.

Notes: Glancing-incidence x-rays provide a wealth of possibilities for the analysis of thin layers and multilayers. This paper discusses reflectometry under both specular and non-specular conditions, and also the combination with angle-dependent x-ray fluorescence. From these measurements information can be obtained on layer thickness, interface quality and compositional depth profile. First the historical development of glancing-incidence x-ray analysis is sketched. Then the physical principles of the interaction of glancing-incidence x-rays with samples which may contain rough interfaces are discussed. The equipment, which allows for both x-ray fluorescence and reflectivity measurements, is also described. The possibilities are illustrated with a number of examples from the literature.

Notes: ---A commercial mixture of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers, reportedly consisting of six components, was recently resolved into 12 peaks attributed to CLA isomers using silver-ion high performance liquid chromatography (Ag+-HPLC). In this study, the coupling of two analytical silver-ion high performance liquid chromatography columns (tandem-column Ag+-HPLC) in series led to the enhanced resolution of CLA isomers. Many CLA isomers were baseline resolved and the pair 18 : 2 8,10 c/t and 18 : 2 7,9 c/t found in cheese products, was resolved for the first time. In this work, a similar commercial CLA mixture was separated into 16 peaks, while CLA isomers from cheese also gave rise to 16 peaks. As expected, the CLA isomers were separated into three geometric groups in the order trans, trans, cis/trans, and cis, cis. Semi-preparative Ag+-HPLC, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy of the dimethyloxazoline derivatives, was used to confirm the identity of the newly resolved positional CLA isomers. The double bond configuration of CLA isomers was established by gas chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Two minor t,t CLA isomers found in cheese, presumably 18 : 2 t6t8 and 18 : 2 t13t15, were also separated. The CLA isomeric composition of 16 commercial cheese products was determined.

Notes: ---The usefulness of capillary electrophoresis (CE) with diode array detection for the profiling of Propolis, a hive product, is investigated. Water extracts of Propolis were analyzed with both capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) at pH 7.0 and 9.3, and micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) with sodium dodecyl sulfate at pH 9.3. Characteristic profiles were obtained and several organic acids and preservatives could be identified by means of library comparison of the recorded UV spectra combined with addition of reference compounds to the extracts. The selectivity of the CZE and MEKC system differed considerably but the information obtained with both methods was similar. The dry residues of the water extraction were extracted with ethanol-water (70 : 30, v/v) and analyzed with the MEKC system to enable the separation of the more hydrophobic constituents of the Propolis samples. Complex profiles containing various well separated peaks were obtained allowing the identification of some interesting flavonoids. On the basis of the recorded CZE and MEKC profiles, the Propolis samples could be divided into two clearly different groups which are probably from a different origin.

Notes: Electronic structure of neutral Zn-chlorin complexes and their π-mono- and dianions has been considered. The π-anions were obtained by reduction of neutral chlorins with a sodium mirror in tetrahydrofuran solution. Results of spectroscopic studies have been compared with semiempirical quantum-chemical calculations. Characteristic bands in electronic absorption spectra of the uv, visible and near infrared regions are in good agreement with CNDO/S-CI calculations. Partially resolved hyperfine structure in EPR spectra of π-radical anions was observed. Parameters of the EPR spectra obtained by using the simulation technique were compared with spin densities calculated by the INDO method. The detailed interpretation of 1H and 13C NMR spectra of neutral and dianion Zn-octaethylchlorins is presented. All the proton signals in π-dianions are shifted upfield because of the influence of paramagnetic ring current. The upfield shifts in 13C NMR spectra of the species studied have been observed too, except for two carbon atoms of the pyrrole ring being placed opposite the hydrogenated one. The 13C peak positions correlate with the charge distribution on C atoms in neutral molecules as well as in π-dianions. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
