Notes: The aim of this work was to develop an analytical method by High Temperature Capillary Gas Chromatography (HT-CGC) to characterize and identify the presence of tzauhtli, orchid mucilage, in works of art. During the pre-Hispanic and colonial period, tzauhtli was used as an adhesive for paper and feathers, as well as paint binder, and was one of the components of the paste used to model corn stalk sculptures. The mucilage was extracted with hot water from orchid bulbs (Bletia campanulata) and lyophilized. The free sugars from the mucilage were analyzed by CGC after derivatization. The polysaccharide of the mucilage was characterized after its partial acid hydrolysis by HT-CGC analysis of the oligosaccharides obtained. The proposed chromatographic method allows the identification of different mucilages in works of art. This contribution is the first report of the oligosaccharides from the hydrolysis of the mucilage extracted from orchid bulbs (Bletia campanulata).

Notes: A parallel column gas chromatography (PCGC) methodology that simultaneously collects retention information on multiple stationary phases is presented. The multidimensional PCGC configuration links a precolumn in series with a set of parallel analytical columns (having different stationary phases) all connected to a single detector. GC peaks heartcut from the precolumn are detected as a series of peaks due to retention differences on parallel columns. This provides a GC retention pattern that is characteristic of the analyte, the stationary phase array, and the conditions of the analysis. PCGC peak patterns observed for groups of C8, C9, and C10 compounds are presented. The use of PCGC with infrared and mass spectral detectors is reported. A methodology to account for changes in GC operating parameters using relative retentions of analytes to internal standards is presented. The first use of thermodynamic retention parameters to model retention behavior on parallel analytical columns under different temperature profiles is presented. Retention predictions within 0.3-0.6% of experimental values are reported. These results indicate that PCGC has potential as a general qualitative analysis tool. Future efforts to calibrate retention predictions, to transport PCGC results between instruments, and to optimize the number of parallel columns are proposed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.This article is a US Government work and, as such, is in the public domain in the United States of America.

Notes: A method for the separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by high-performance liquid chromatography using a hybrid micellar mobile phase is described. The detection of PAHs was carried out using the fluorescence method with programmable excitation and emission wavelength. The method is applied to the analysis of several environmental samples (sea water, sediments, limpets, sea worms) and several of these compounds are quantitated at concentration below 70 ng L-1(kg-1) in the original samples.

Notes: Chiral 2,2′,3,5′,6-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 95), 2,2′,3,3′,4,6′-hexachlorobiphnyl (PCB 132) and 2,2′,3,4′,5′,6-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB 149) were quantified in Atlantic Ocean shark liver samples (C. coelolepis) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and their enantiomeric ratios were studied by multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC) with an achiral-chiral column combination and detected by ECD and MS/SIM. The concentration range of the chiral PCBs was from 2 to 6 ng/g (fresh weight), which represents 2-6 % of the total PCB mean concentration. The investigations revealed a small enantiomeric bias of PCB 132 in most of the samples studied (ER = 0.75-0.89, ee = 6-14%), while PCB 95 and PCB 149 were present in racemic or almost racemic form.

Notes: Part of this work focuses on temperature programmed retention index assessment of 70 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using a methylsilicone capillary column. The use of the retention index presented here offers a good possibility of identifying and determining PAHs in the mass range discussed and to apply such conditions to the analysis of fuel deposits. Retention indices and vaporization enthalpy data of PAHs are linearly related to the molecular total energy. This paper describes also a gas-chromatographic study of the adsorption of some PAHs on Carbopack.

Notes: The isotimic method allows a full analysis and accurate simulation of the experimental EPR spectrum of Cr(III) ions in axial field sites in the anatase polymorph of TiO2. The precise estimates of the magnetic and crystalline field parameters obtained from an optimum fit of experimental and simulated spectra are geff = 1.9734 ± 0.0005, D = 40.6 ± 0.2 mT and a Lorentzian linewidth of Γ = 0.1 mT.
