Notes: The effect of elemental sulfur (S8) and tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (TMTD) on the chemical crosslinking of PVC is studied. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and gel content of crosslinked and uncrosslinked PVC molded samples, cured at different times in hot air, are evaluated. It was found that crosslinking PVC with TMTD improves its mechanical properties, and adding S8 produces a slight improvement. Also, the S8 presence accelerated the PVC/TMTD crosslinking reaction when the crosslinking reaction was carried out under shear forces, but not when the curing was done in hot air, where the S8 retards the process.

Notes: The crystalline structure of γ-Zr(AsO4)(H2AsO4) × 2 H2O (γ-ZrAs) has been refined by the Rietveld method. It has a monoclinic P21 layered structure built up from AsO4 tetrahedra and ZrO6 octahedra stacked along the 001 direction. The cell parameters are: a = 5.5752(6) Å, b = 6.8290(7) Å, c = 12.110(1) Å, and β = 103.03(1)°. The layered nature of γ-ZrAs is confirmed by the intercalation of n-alkylamines (CH3[CH2]nNH2; n = 0-5) as well as of cyclic amines (benzylamine, cyclohexylamine, piperidine, and pyridine). Among the linear amines, only with methyl-, ethyl-, and hexylamine is the maximum incorporation attained. With the cyclic amines, except in the case of pyridine, pure new phases are obtained, with the highest degree of intercalation being one mol of amine per mol of γ-ZrAs.

Notes: This study deals with some macroscopical, microscopical, and ultrastructural aspects of the spinal cord central canal of the German shepherd dog. The caudal end of the spinal cord is constituted by the conus medullaris, which may extend to the first sacral vertebra, the terminal ventricle, and the filum terminale. The latter structure is considered as internum (second to third sacral vertebrae) or externum (fifth caudal vertebra), according to its relation to the dura mater. Occasionally, there is a second anchorage which is close to the level of the sixth caudal vertebra. The central canal is surrounded by a ciliated ependymal epithelium, which differs depending upon the levels. The most caudal part of the filum terminale bears a columnar ciliated ependymal epithelium surrounded by two layers of glia and pia mater, which separate the central canal from the subarachnoid space. Microfil injections show a communication between the cavity and the subarachnoid space, as the plastic is able to pass through the ependymal epithelium. At the level of the terminal ventricle there are real separations of the ependymal epithelium, which seem to connect the lumen of the spinal canal with the subarachnoid space. These structures probably constitute one of the drainage pathways of the cerebrospinal fluid. The diameter of the central canal is related to the age of the animal. However, even in very old animals the spinal cord central canal reaches the tip of the filum terminale and remains patent until death. At the ultrastructural level the ependymal cells present villi, located on cytoplasmic projections, cilia, dense mitochondria, and oval nuclei. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The plastic flow behavior of wrought Co-27Cr-5Mo-0.05C alloy was investigated at 298 K as a function of grain size using uniaxial tension testing. The microstructures produced by deformation were characterized using X-ray diffraction, reflected light, and scanning electron microscopy. This study revealed that material with initially coarse face-centered cubic (fcc) grains exhibits larger uniform ductility than material with fine grain size. Typically, increasing the grain size from 7 to 70 μm reduces the yield strength by about 50% and increases the elongation to fracture from 12 to 30% with a small effect on the tensile strength. The material is capable of deforming uniformly to large strains without developing plastic instabilities until the point of fracture. This effect was found to be associated with the occurrence of transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) in the coarse-grained material. TRIP enhances the material's ability to deform uniformly by maintaining a high rate of strain hardening during deformation. Smaller fcc initial grain size inhibits the transformation kinetics of the fcc-hexagonal close-packed phase transition according to the Olson-Cohen model. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: We report the sequence analysis of a 10 kb DNA fragment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome VII. This sequence contains four complete open reading frames (ORFs) of greater than 100 amino acids. There are also two incomplete ORFs flanking the extremes: one of these, G2868, is the 5′ part of the SCS3 gene (Hosaka et al., 1994). ORFs G2853 and G2856 correspond to the genes CEG1, coding for the alfa subunit of the mRNA guanylyl transferase and a 3′ gene of unknown function previously sequenced (Shibagaki et al., 1992). G2864 is identical to SOH1 also reported (Fan and Klein, 1994). The translated sequence of G2861 is similar to the human dnaJ homolog. The nucleotide sequence reported here has been entered in the EMBL Data Library under the Accession Number X87252.

Notes: A DNA fragment containing a transcription regulating region of the alcohol oxidase (AOX1) gene from the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris was used in the construction of a vector for the expression of heterologous proteins in the methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorpha. We used this vector to clone the SUC2 gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae into H. polymorpha yeast. The culture conditions for invertase production using a fed-batch culture were studied. More than 1·5×103 U/ml of biologically active invertase (1 g/l) were secreted to the cellular periplasmic space. The fermentative process was scaled up to 50 l.Invertase produced from H. polymorpha was glycosylated, but it contained significantly less carbohydrate than protein produced by S. cerevisiae. Using the Western-blot technique, it was observed that invertase secreted from H. polymorpha and invertase secreted from S. cerevisiae showed common antigenic determinants.

Notes: We report the sequence analysis of a 6·8 kb DNA fragment from Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome VII. This sequence contains five open reading frames (ORFs) greater than 100 amino acids. There is also an incomplete ORF flanking one of the extremes, G2868, which is the 3′ end of the SCS3 gene (Hosaka et al., 1994). The translated sequence of ORF G2882 shows similarity to the human methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (Goyette et al., 1994). ORF G2889 shows no significant homologies with the sequences compiled in databases. ORF G2893 corresponds to the gene SUP44, coding for the yeast ribosomal protein S4 (All-Robin et al., 1990). G2873 and G2896 are internal ORFs. The whole sequence of the fragment is available at the EMBL nucleotide sequence database, GenBank and Data Bank of Japan under the Accession Number X94106.

Notes: The study of mixed films has become of considerable interest both from theoretical and practical points of view. The π-A isotherms of monostearin-distearin (about 50% 1,3- and 50% 1,2-isomers) mixed films spread on water as a function of emulsifier ratio and temperature were studied in an automated Langmuir-type film balance. When molecules of both emulsifiers are spread on the air-water interface they are packed more closely together than when either emulsifier is present alone, and they enter into some form of association. This association can be demonstrated by surface pressure-area isotherms and by thermodynamic studies. The characteristics of the mixed films, their elasticity and miscibility, which are of interest in emulsion or foam stability are discussed. A molecular model established can explain the interactions between film and subphase molecules and their relationships with variables of the process (pressure and temperature). This model fits the calculated thermodynamic parameters.

Notes: More than 100 solvents and the gas phase were used to develop a solvent dipolarity-polarizability scale that combines the medium dipolarity and polarizability into a single parameter (SPP) calculated from the UV-visible spectra of 2-(dimethyl-amino)-7-nitrofluorene (DMANF) and its homomorph 2-fluoro-7-nitrofuorene (FNF). The proposed scale compares favourably for nonprotic solvents with existing solvent polarity scales including Kosower's Z, Dimroth and Reichardt's ET(30), Brooker's χR, Dong and Winnick's Py; Kamlet, Abboud, and Taft's π*, and Drago's S′ scale. When data are derived from electronic transitions, they provide an accurate description for the solvent effect in UV-Vis, IR, NMR, and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as in other chemical areas including thermodynamics and kinetics.
