Notes: Contents The process integration issues and various approches to reduce process steps for high performance/low cost sub-half micron BiCMOS LSIs are reviewed. Using these technologies, the bipolar transistor process is added with minimum increase in process complexity, while maintaining compatiblity with a state-of-the-art CMOS process. Future prospects for high performance BiCMOS device/process technologies are addressed.

Notes: Abstract In order to reveal the mechanism for brazing diamond using Ag–Cu–Ti filler metal, thermoanalysis of elemental metals (silver and copper) either with added diamond micropowder or with added titanium carbide micropowder as nucleant were investigated to detect undercoolings. No undercooling for the solidification of silver with added titanium carbide powder was detected by the thermoanalytical curve, and also no undercooling for copper with added diamond powder was detected. These phenomena suggest that titanium carbide powder acts in the solidification of silver effectively as a nucleant and that diamond powder also acts in the solidification of copper as a nucleant. Fine-grained silver was observed in the micrograph of the silver added with titanium carbide powder. The results of the calculations on the planar disregistry, δ, and the dispersion energy, Edisp revealed that the Ag (100)–TiC(100) interface and Cu(100)–diamond (100) interface are more stable than the other combinations. The results of undercoolings of various specimens correlated with both planar disregistry and dispersion energy. According to these results, the titanium carbide reaction product is considered to play an important role in the solidification of silver. The brazing strength is considered to arise from the solidification of the brazing filler metal from the titanium carbide reaction product. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract Two chromosome-integrating vectors, pLC1 and pLC2, were used. The former is the pUC19-based vector carrying the Lentinus edodes ras gene promoter and priA gene terminator, and the latter is the pBR322-based vector carrying the promoter and terminator of the priA gene. The manganese (II) peroxidase (MnP) cDNA (mnpc) derived from Pleurotus ostreatus was fused between the promoter and terminator of pLC1 and pLC2, yielding the recombinant plasmids pLC1-mnp and pLC2-mnp. These plasmids were introduced into protoplasts of the Coprinus cinereus trp1 strain with the C. cinereus TRP1-containing plasmid pCc1001 by co-transformation. Two Trp+ transformants for each plasmid, showing clearly higher lignin-decolorization activities, were obtained through introduction of pLC1-mnp and pLC2-mnp. Southern-blot analysis revealed that the four transformants all possess the mnpc sequence on their chromosomes. One Trp+ MnP+ transformant (named TF2-7), which was derived from the introduction of pLC2-mnp and carried the highest number of copies (approx. 10) of mnpc, showed remarkably high lignin-decolorization and -degradation activities; at the time of cultivation when only 35%–40% of the lignin was decolored and degraded by the control Trp+ transformant obtained by the introduction of pCc1001 alone, almost all of the lignin was decolored and degraded by TF2-7.

Notes: Abstract A new approach was undertaken to deposit carbon from organic solutions. The method consisted of discharge-heating a tungsten cathode in a water-ethanol electrolyte under a high d.c. voltage. At high temperatures the cathode was covered with a sheath of vapour. In the low voltage region, no carbon deposition occurred. Instead, an uneven surface with spikes of tungsten or a relatively smooth surface, which evolved with increasing voltage, were observed. High voltages and high concentrations of ethanol were favourable for the deposition of bulky carbon and also for the carburization of tungsten to WC. Glassy carbon and disordered graphitic carbon were obtained at the highest applied voltages.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis and specific properties of a new family of chiral dopants for ferroelectric liquid crystals, which are derived from a series of trifluorinated dihydrofuranones and tetrahydrofurans, are described. On the basis of the structural features of designed materials and the MOPAC-PM 3 calculations, a discussion of the response time-structure relationships is given. Optically active trifluoromethylated materials with a tetrahydrofuran tail unit were found to be superior chiral dopants for preparing ferroelectric liquid crystalline compositions.

Notes: Abstract An attempt was made to deposit carbon films by electrolysis of a water-ethylene glycol solution. Carbon plate and an n-type silicon substrate were dipped in the solution and a high d.c. potential was negatively applied on the silicon substrate. Some deposits were observed in the region between the boiling point curve and the line approximately 50 °C below and parallel to the boiling point, when electrolysis was carried out at 1 kV for 6 h. For higher potentials of 1.4–2.0 kV and longer electrolysis of 12 h, some samples showed a broad X-ray diffraction peak and Raman peaks, corresponding to graphitic carbon.

Notes: Abstract A positron lifetime study has been done on dielectric multilayer cavity mirrors for free-electron-laser experiments by the use of a variable-energy pulsed positron beam. A long-lived ortho-positronium component has been observed at low positron energy region, corresponding to the depth of the top amorphous SiO2 layer. The intensity of the positronium component correlates with the degradation and restoration of the mirrors. We discuss the relation between the positronium intensity and degradation mechanism of the mirrors. The present studies revealed that the slow positron lifetime technique is highly sensitive to the properties of the mirrors and is useful for the evaluation of the mirrors.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra of (Fe0.5Zn0.5)PS3, which is isomorphous with FePS3, were measured at 300 and 80 K, and were compared with those of FePS3. We succeeded in preparing (Fe0.5Zn0.5)PS3 intercalated with pyridine. In the XRD pattern of the intercalate the diffraction peaks corresponding to (Fe0.5Zn0.5)PS3 were completely missing, suggesting that the intercalation was completely performed with pyridine. The Mössbauer spectra were changed significantly by the intercalation suggesting the charge transfer from guest molecules to the host matrix. The replacement of iron by zinc has no influence on the electronic state of the iron atom, except for the magnetic interaction.
