    Notizen: Abstract We introduce a formulation of the Skyrme problem using differential forms. By means of this formulation, we prove first that the homothetic map between the standard three-sphere of radius R, S3 r ⊂ R4, and S3 1 is the unique minimizer, modulo isometries, of the Skyrme energy in its homotopy class, for any R less than some critical value R0 ∈ (√3/2, √2]. We then establish a stability result for this Skyrme-form problem from which we can recover the result of M. Loss and N. S. Manton which states that this homothetic map is stable only up to R = √2.

    Notizen: Abstract Macroscopic fractal aggregates of cobalt are obtained by thermal evaporation of cobalt metal in an argon atmosphere and subsequent deposition on a silicon substrate heated to 1000 K. It is established that the fractal structure is formed by diffusion-limited aggregation of cobalt particles. The macroscopic fractal cobalt aggregates are ferromagnetic.

We consider repeated games with complete information and imperfect monitoring, where each player is assigned a fixed subset of players and only observes the moves chosen by the players in this subset. This structure is naturally represented by a directed graph. We prove that a generalized folk theorem holds for any payoff function if and only if the graph is 2-connected, and then extend this result to the context of finitely repeated games.

    Notizen: Abstract A genomic clone encoding the precursor of wheat leaf ferredoxin has been isolated and characterised. The uninterrupted PetF gene encodes a polypeptide of 143 amino acid residues, consisting of an N-terminal presequence of 46 amino acid residues and a mature polypeptide of 97 amino acid residues. Southern blot analysis suggests that six copies of the PetF gene are present in the wheat haploid genome. Northern blot analysis has shown that the genes are both developmentally and light regulated in wheat seedlings and provides evidence that a circadian rhythm regulates the steady-state levels of ferredoxin transcripts. The intact wheat gene and several chimeric constructs, containing portions of the 5′-upstream region fused to the β-glucuronidase reporter gene, have been introduced into tobacco plants, but levels of β-glucuronidase activity above background were not detected, suggesting that the 5′-upstream region is unable to function as a promoter in tobacco plants.

    Notizen: Abstract Northern blot analysis of RNA extracted from leaves of increasing age and different organs, indicates that genes encoding both isoenzymes of tobacco phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK, EC 2.7.2.3) are differentially expressed in a developmental and tissue-specific manner. The genes for both chloroplast PGK (chl-PGK) and cytosolic PGK (cyt-PGK) also show light-modulated gene expression in vivo. In dark-grown developing cotyledonary leaves of tobacco both PGK mRNAs are present, but only the concentration of the chl-PGK mRNA increased on illumination. In contrast, on transfer to darkness, the concentration of both mRNAs decreased in light-grown seedlings and then increased again on resumption of illumination.

    Notizen: Abstract Sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase (SBPase) is a Calvin Cycle enzyme exclusive to chloroplasts and is involved in photosynthetic carbon fixation. The two cysteine residues involved in its redox regulation have been identified by site-directed mutagenesis. They are four residues apart in a predicted loop between two alpha helices and probably form a disulphide bond when oxidised. Three-dimensional modelling of SBPase has been performed using crystallographic data from the structurally homologous pig fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase). The results suggest that formation of the disulphide bridge in SBPase is directly analogous to the allosteric regulation of pig FBPase by AMP in terms of the resulting structural changes. Similar changes are thought to occur in chloroplast FBPase, which like SBPase, is also redox regulated and involved in carbon fixation. From the results presented here it appears that the same basic mechanism for the allosteric regulation of enzymic activity operates in the FBPases and SBPase but that the sites at which the regulatory ligands (AMP or thioredoxin) exert their effects are different in each
